EMS Fire services - Fire Prevention and Safety Risk Watch ® 2001 : NFPA’s new injury prevention Web site targets kids, parents and educators Quincy, MA, June 27, 2001 - The non-profit NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) today launched www.riskwatch.org , a dynamic, new Web site on child-safety issues that supports Risk Watch ®, the first comprehensive injury prevention program for children in preschool through grade eight. The program is already in use in thousands of classrooms throughout North America and is credited with saving 27 lives in documented accounts. Risk Watch works to make children safer from preventable injuries, which kill more than 7,000 children each year, and permanently disable more than 120,000. The Web site demonstrates safety basics in the program's eight risk areas: motor vehicle safety; fire and burn prevention; choking, suffocation and strangulation prevention; poisoning prevention; falls prevention; firearms injury prevention; bike and pedestrian safety; and water safety. Because Risk Watch is a community effort, enlisting the help of parents, safety advocates and teachers, the Web site is designed to appeal to all members of the community with different links targeting different Risk Watch audiences, such as:

The Missing and Exploited Children's Program coordinates activities, under the Missing Children's Assistance Act, concerning missing and exploited children, including preventing abductions, investigating the exploitation of children, finding missing children and reuniting them with their families, and addressing the psychological impact of abduction on the child and family. To enhance the safety of children, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) program:
  • Supports the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a clearinghouse and resource center that collects and distributes data regarding missing and exploited children and operates a national toll-free hotline for individuals to report information regarding missing children and to request information needed to reunite missing children with their legal custodians.
  • Provides training and technical assistance to state clearinghouses, nonprofit organizations, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and attorneys.
  • Helps jurisdictions in developing procedures to set up multi-agency and interdisciplinary responses to missing and exploited children and their families.

    PARENT ALERT!!
    • Children ages 6 to 12 are at the greatest risk for bike accidents. Injury to the head is the most serious result.
    • Children ages 5 to 9 are at highest risk of being hit by a car. Why? They dart out into traffic.
    • In a crash at 30 miles per hour, an unbelted child would hit the dashboard with as much force as a fall from a three-story building.
    • Children under 4 are at especially high risk for drowning. It takes only an inch of water and a few moments for a child to drown. It could happen in a bathtub, kiddie pool, toilet bowl, bucket, or fishpond.
    • Kids under age 5 are at greatest risk when fire strikes. They may panic and hide in closets or under beds. Young children also need special help to escape.

The National Steal-Proof Master Challenge will occur in 70 locations around the US and UK, offering FREE abduction prevention education using the "Journey of the Steal-Proof Master (SPM)" video and facilitated discussions. The SPM video is a fantasy-based adventure that teaches children and adults about the 10 most common lures used by abductors. Glastonbury, CT (PRWEB) May 17, 2004 On Saturday, May 22nd at 10AM, 20,000 kids and adults across the United States and the United Kingdom will become “Steal-Proof Masters.” Adventures in Safety, LLC and United Professionals, along with martial artists and safety officials across the country, will screen the “Journey of the Steal-Proof Master” (SPM) video and provide free trainings in hundreds of communities in an all-out effort to teach children and adults about abduction prevention.
The “Journey of the Steal-Proof Master” is a fantasy-based adventure created by Adventures in Safety, LLC, based in Glastonbury, CT. Creator Richard Kohler has used the SPM video to teach thousands of area children about abduction prevention while training children to trust their intuitions and to become aware of the lures that adults may use to kidnap and assault them. Kohler is a fourth degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and the owner of Martial Arts Unlimited, a personal development and self-defense training facility.

INJURY PREVENTION: A Role in Prevention
    Some Thoughts to Start

    PHTLS Injury Prevention Programs

WHO Traumatic Injury-2000, Press Release "The Global Burden of Injury" Appendices The Injury Chartbook (posted May 20th, 2003) It is a recognized precept that the term "accident" is a misnomer and that injuries are preventable. While the stated purpose of PHTLS is to provide the prehospital provider with the tools to enable effective trauma management to begin at the scene, PHTLS is also cognizant that prevention can be responsible to alleviate the burden of traumatic injury amongst the masses. As EMS providers, we may hold the most effective positions with which to place at the forefront of the preventative field. We have, after all, seen the consequences of traumatic injury. And whom better to educate those groups most afflicted by trauma, than the very people who serve to provide initial care. There are many ways that you can become involved in the prevention movement. We hope that this page will provide you with some of the tools that can help facilitate your interest in a particular area. Or at the very least, give you some ideas as to where to begin.
