Introduction To The ThinkFirst For KIDS Curriculum Program Offered In Elementary School ThinkFirst For KIDS is presented in a classroom format and is fully integrated into the elementary school curriculum. Each grade (1-3) has a separate curriculum and array of classroom activities designed specifically for its grade level. The activities are designed to be integrated into various subjects, such as mathematics and science. The complete program designed to educate the students about activities which place them at risk of a brain or spinal cord injury; consists of a 12-minute animated video; five individual safety modules; five posters, and five comic strips depicting "Street Smart," an antimated character who practices safe behavior, in related scenarios. Each module addresses an individual safety area including vehicular safety, water safety, bicycle safety, violence, and sports and recreational safety. ThinkFirst For KIDS is introduced through the animated video, "Street Smart: A ThinkFirst Adventure." The video is culturally diverse and addresses the five safety areas by showing true-life scenarios. After the video, a designated instructor is responsible for presenting a 6-week, or other specified period of time, program of safety modules. These modules educate the students about five distinct areas of activities that place them at risk of a brain or spinal cord injury. The five safety modules are supplemented with a hands-on activity and many reinforcement strategies. In addition, each module is introduced with a bulletin board poster and followed-up with a comic strip depicting "Street Smart" in related, scenarios.

Curiosity about fire is part of a child's growth process, especially between the ages of 2 and 9. The majority of fires set by young children are set out of curiosity or experimentation. When children are bored and under no supervision, fires may happen. Matches and lighters should be locked up. Any child can be a potential firesetter. Firesetting behavior in some children is a way of expressing feeling of frustration, unhappiness and need. Punishment, discipline and "scare tactics" will not satisfy a child's curiosity about fire. The child may be angry over a divorce, a move or other crisis. They may be seeking revenge or using fire to send a message that they desperately need attention. Kid's Fire Safety House Program Hands-on, Mobile Classroom Program Rationale Children learn most effectively through active participation, hands-on activity. When we can simulate or duplicate as close as possible a true-to-life environment or situation, it creates a more effective learning opportunity. Objectives Children learn to identify and avoid common fire and burn hazards; to develop burn-safe behaviors; proper fire escape and emergency reporting procedures; practical experience of crawling low beneath (theatrical) smoke to safely escape a house fire; and reporting an emergency. Description The Kids Fire Safety House is a mobile, child-scaled version of a 2-story private dwelling used to teach practical lessons in fire prevention and safety; sheltering and escaping; and reporting emergencies. The "house" has many features including temperature controlled heated doors, an operating 911 telephone system, and non-toxic smoke. Children take part in an educational tour of the house, which includes a practical drill of applying the lessons and techniques learned - when the theatrical smoke begins filling the house and the smoke alarms sound, children practice crawling low and exiting the home. Participating students receive a take-home activity booklet and materials that reinforce the lessons, and stimulate sharing of lessons with siblings and parents.
