Injury Prevention Program
Injury is the number one cause of death, disability and hospitalization for Alameda County residents between 1 and 40 years old. The mission of the Alameda County Injury Prevention Program is to lead and direct efforts to protect and immunize our community against the injury epidemic. Working with policy makers, community leaders, families, service providers and the media, the Injury Prevention Program advocates, trains, informs and challenges the assumption that injuries are "accidents". The Injury Prevention Program prevents injuries by working with:
  • Policy makers - to redirect community resources and support legislation that ensures a safe environment. Community Leaders - to challenge prevailing attitudes about injury and encourage public responsibility for safety. Families - to provide tools to create safe homes and communities.

PARTNERSHIP FOR HEALTHIER KIDS
Inova Health System
Falls Church, Virginia
Case Story A girl in the fifth grade at a Fairfax County Public elementary school was absent for four days. When her teacher called home to find out how the child was doing, she learned that the girl had fallen and hurt her foot so badly that she could not walk on it. Although both her parents worked, the family had no health insurance and did not know where or how to obtain medical care for her, so they kept her at home, hoping her injury would heal. The family eagerly accepted assistance from Partnership for Healthier Kids, which provided the necessary referrals. The little girl got the treatment she needed for her broken foot and returned to school. Program Description - Inova Health System's Partnership for Healthier Kids is an intensive prevention and care coordination program focused on schools, families and neighborhoods. The Partnership has spent two years developing and testing programs to bring health and safety assessment, preventive health care education, and care coordination to children and their families through elementary schools. The program has been built on thorough and sound collection of data to pinpoint needs and opportunities. The Partnership was created to increase the percentage of children who receive immunizations, injury and smoking prevention services, and have a source of coordinated primary care for their preventive and episodic healthcare.
