"'Cyberspace,' the 'Web,' the 'Net,' the 'Information Highway'" — Whatever The Benefits of the Information Highway The vast array of services that you currently find online is constantly growing. Reference information such as news, weather, sports, stock quotes, movie reviews, encyclopedias, and airline fares are readily available online. Users can conduct transactions such as trading stocks, making travel reservations, banking, and shopping online. You can find information about your local schools and government, read an out-of-town newspaper, or obtain vital health information. Millions of people communicate through electronic mail (E-mail) with family and friends around the world. Others use the public message board chat areas to make new friends who share common interests. You can even use the Internet to watch video and listen to audio programs produced by major media companies, businesses, organizations, and even individuals. As an educational and entertainment tool users can learn about virtually any topic, visit a museum, take a college course, or play an endless number of computer games with other users or against the computer itself.

The Seminole County Department of Public Safety is proud to be part of the Safe Place Program in Seminole County. Safe Place is a community initiative that educates hundreds of thousands of young people every year about the dangers of trying to resolve difficult, threatening situations on their own. The project created a network of Safe Place sites where help can easily be found. Safe Place is a nationally acclaimed program that is easily replicated in communities across the country. This program is a unique example of how communities can collaborate with the business sector, volunteers and youth service agencies to provide temporary safe havens for youth in crisis. Thousands of young people have received help at designated Safe Place locations across the country. Business and community buildings display the diamond-shaped yellow and black Safe Place logo identifying them as Safe Place sites - places in neighborhoods where youth can get immediate help. All Seminole County Fire Stations and Seminole County Animal Services Building are designated as a "safe place". Other Safe Place sites include fast food restaurants, convenience stores, movie theaters, and other community facilities such as police departments, libraries, YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs. In some cases, buses are designated as mobile Safe Place sites.

Program gives East Baltimore parents real power to improve kids' safety The Johns Hopkins Children's Center has received a four-year, $213,380 grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to establish a nationally recognized pediatric injury prevention program in Baltimore. The Injury Free Coalition for Kids (IFCK) of Baltimore at Johns Hopkins University is a hospital-led, community-oriented program that offers parents and neighbors training and guidance to make communities safer for children and teenagers. Based at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, IFCK Baltimore is a partnership between the Children's Center's Pediatric Trauma Service and Children's Safety Center, the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and East Baltimore community groups, with support from the City of Baltimore. IFCK Baltimore will initially focus on East Baltimore, where a comprehensive analysis of Johns Hopkins pediatric trauma service records shows children are at increased risk of hospitalization due to motor vehicle injuries, pedestrian and bicycle accidents, falls, burns, and assaults.

Since 1996 in Placer County there have been 5 unintentional firearms injuries to children under 16, and one death. Each of these incidents was preventable. We need your help - one injury or death is too many ! Even if you do not have a gun in your home, there are guns in about half of all American homes. The chances are very good that at some point your child will visit a home where firearms are present. The Placer County Health and Human Services Department and the Placer County Sheriff's Office provide this gun safety information to protect your children - and all children in our community - from tragic injury or death by unintentional shootings.
California State Law on Firearms Storage
