In Wichita, the YMCA ensures kids have a safe and enriching place to go after the final bell rings. Eight-year-old Laine Campbell improves her arm and hand dexterity through the process of dressing a doll It's a time-honored American tradition: the latchkey kid. Too old for child care and too young for a job, he or she comes home to an empty house and a warm TV. So what's the harm? some might ask. At least they're staying out of trouble, right? Wrong. Watching TV is a sedentary activity, putting kids at risk for all sorts of short- and long-term health problemsespecially when the standard junk food snacks are factored in. Parents aren't around to monitor kids' viewing, and many programs and ads revolve around sex and imagenot the healthiest messages for an 11-year-old. Of course, some kids recognize how unentertaining most TV shows really are, and they get bored. Then they get in trouble. Research shows that most crimes by and against youth happen not at night, but in the afternoon. In Wichita, Kan., a fiercely collaborative after-school program helps prevent these problems. Offered at 15 area middle schools and administered by the YMCA of Wichita, it keeps preteens safely engaged in dozens of activities, all free of charge.

By Katharine Mieszkowski "Cool to be real!" it's the chirpy slogan, and name, of a new Web site for preteen girls that's chock-full of self-esteem-boosting messages and helpful tips on leading a healthy lifestyle. What could be wrong with that? Well, maybe the fact that the site is actually a thinly cloaked advertorial for the joys of eating beef, brought to budding carnivores everywhere by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association.

University of Cincinnati/MARK LYONS Mom and dad have been laid off, Hansel and Gretel are latchkey kids, and they get lost in an urban jungle - where the Sandman offers them a joint. Oh, and don't count on them finding a gingerbread house in the woods, either. "Fairy tales don't just function as good stories - they function, in part, as a road map for children to confront some of the things they have to confront in life," says Thomas de Mallet Burgess, director of an update of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music this weekend. The production, says de Mallet Burgess, is about the rites of passage that children go through as they grow up, gain independence from their parents and go through typical teenage rebellion. "It's also about poverty and the effects of poverty on the family," he says.

Our members area holds many things for all age groups. There are many articles on aniridia, its associated conditions, and the latest news on procedures, and treatments in our "Filing cabinet". We also like to report any of the latest research being done and make available the chance to participate if desired. We also have personal stories and the ability to meet other families with this condition in our "History" area. This area is an interactive site, so that members as well as USAAN can post news, questions, articles, research reviews and even take polls. This is a great way to get other perspectives from people who have dealt with these issues. We have our latest information on our medical conferences, and gatherings. We are currently taking registrations for our next medical conference / gathering. Space is limited so contact us as soon as possible. Once we receive your registration fee your place at the conference is secured. Also, there is information on doctors who have dealt with aniridia and its associated conditions or who are doing special procedures or treatments. We also provide helpful websites to assist in educating to help you make decisions.

Lack of after-school programs for preteens gives kids an advantage in conflict with parents, says UC Berkeley researcher 05 Jan 2000 By Patricia McBroom, Public Affairs BERKELEY With few or no full-scale after-school programs in place for children aged 10 to 12, working parents are losing a battle of wills with their kids who want to be free of adult supervision, according to research carried out at the Center for Working Families at the University of California, Berkeley. These families are being "dropped off a cliff" in terms of after-school care, once their children are out of elementary school where care programs were routinely in place until the end of the working day, said Rivka Polatnick, a research sociologist at the center. "We are playing with fire," said Polatnick. "We know that the period of preteen into early adolescence is a very vulnerable age and a critical time in development. These children are being left essentially unsupervised." Polatnick's research, to be released by the center this month, is based on interviews with 36 preteens in a Bay Area middle school and their parents. It is one of a few studies conducted in the United States to collect in-depth material on how preteens feel and what choices they are making when they get to middle school. These case studies add insight to national statistics showing that more than one third of U.S. children aged 10 to 12 with working parents are regularly taking care of themselves.

New York, NY. October 17, 2001 BrainPOP , the leading creator of educational animated, Science, Health and Technology movies for preteens, announces a new movie that answers the question, "What is anthrax?". BrainPOP Health, Science and Biology movies are widely used as part of the science curriculum in schools and on educational websites such as The McGraw-Hill Learning Network National Geographic for Kids , and Noggin
Over the past two weeks, was swamped with questions from 8-14 year-olds about the anthrax scare, asking questions like, "Can I get anthrax at school?" and "Is it safe to open mail?". In a tone that is not scary or condescending, the BrainPOP movie explains where anthrax comes from and reassures kids that exposure to anthrax is very rare and that anthrax is not contagious.
BrainPOP COO, Yves Saada commented on the need for an Anthrax movie geared towards kids and preteens. "There is a lot of anthrax information available for adults but we have not seen anything for kids. From the questions our characters have been receiving, we know that kids are aware of the anthrax threat and that it is scary to them. On a personal level, the BrainPOP team is based in New York City so we felt a real need to address this issue that is affecting all of us. The

Health Behavior News Service Stressed-out 11-year-olds eat more unhealthful food than their less-anxious classmates and consume fewer nutritious meals and snacks, according to British researchers. A study of 4,320 schoolchildren found that they tended to slip into generally unhealthful dietary practices as their lives grew more stressful. Rather than simply overeating in response, they munched more often on bad stuff while ignoring healthy ways to eat, says the report in the August issue of the journal Health Psychology This could be bad news down the road, the researchers note: Obesity heading into the teenage years increases the chances of being overweight as an adult, which can then lead to increased risk of heart disease, cancer or Type 2 diabetes. Wardle found that the strongest association for stress was with fatty foods. The most stressed students ate nearly twice the amount of the least stressed group, she says. Curiously, overweight students said they were less likely to eat fatty foods, snacks and breakfast. Overweight children claiming to eat less may seem contradictory, but Wardle says that obese adults typically underreport their daily energy intake, too.

Paquette According to Lissie Browder, a Sunday school teacher at Trinity United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls, Kan., our preteens are asking, but institutions aren't paying attention. "Unfortunately, my church spends less time and money on these kids than any other group in the church," she says. "I believe it's like that at most churches." Giving Them Answers
What kinds of questions are on these young minds? "[They] ask the same questions mankind has always asked: Who is God? What does it take to go to heaven? Why is 'little me' significant?" Bowder says. Rabbi Glenn Black, director of regional programming for National Conference of Synagogue Youth (NCSY), agrees. "They're dealing with the same issues we're grappling with," he says. Jewish preteens, even if they attend religious day schools, have other questions. "Kids want to know what distinguishes them as a Jew: What's different between them and other people? Why should they follow the Jewish religion?" he says. Current events also matter. "Israel is a big issue: How do we respond? Who's right, who's wrong?" Rabbi Black says.

Preteens Start Smoking to Control Weight
A poignant report out of Harvard Medical School appeared in the October 1999 issue of Pediatrics . Girls and boys as young as 9 years old take up smoking in an attempt to lose weight. More than 15% of 9 to 14 year old kids have smoked at least once, and getting slim is a prime motivator. Most of these kids are not even overweight. Kids who smoke are 2.5 times more likely to purge themselves or have other eating disorders. It's true that when people stop smoking they often gain weight, but we need to dispel the myth that starting smoking helps with weight loss. It's not too soon to make sure your children know that smoking is not effective for weight control.
