Whacha Doing? by Stacy Jo McDermott (smcdermo@cmp.com) OK, I'm on the front sidewalk, nary a cloud or fog bank in the sky, got my soda, star charts, cookies and telescope all set up. "Whacha doing?" I look around, then I look down and staring back at me are three miniature people. What do I do now That's easy!! I invite the little wipper-snappers over to the eyepiece for a look! I'll tell them, "Look through this and you'll see the craters on the moon!" or "Check it out, there are two stars that are partners and they are pretty together!" 90% of the time, the beloved short person is impressed. If I'm doing lunar observation before the cool summer stuff comes up, I have them look at the moon with their eyes and ask them what is different…and because they are curious and smart, they immediately (well almost) realize that looking at stuff in the sky is pretty fascinating! As I do a number of city star parties, getting children, particularly children who live in light polluted areas, to the telescope is a fun past time for me. Depending upon the age of the child and the level of interest, one must become like a child…for one, get down on their level, physically speaking. That way you get a good idea of the perspective from their eyes. Also, lower the telescope so that they don't have to stand tiptoed to get their eye in a comfortable position at the eyepiece. Most children whom I've shared a telescope with ask the most intriguing questions. "What's that up there?" "Why is that one a different color", "Why does the moon appear different on different nights?".

http://www.kidscontracts.com/
Welcome To KidsContracts!
KidsContracts are helping parents set behavior boundaries with their teens and pre-teens using 9 simple, fill-in-the-blank agreements. KidsContracts are very simple to use, fill-in-the-blank, agreements which cover a wide variety of important health, safety, social and educational issues. We think you will find that these contracts are one of the most important things that you and your child will ever agree to. We also think your investment (time and money) in these agreements will be one of the best investments you ever made. KidsContracts are written in easy-to-understand language, which clearly defines what is expected of your child and what the consequences are if they choose to ignore one or more of the agreements. Children look for clear guidance from their parents or guardians concerning what is right or wrong, and what will happen if they break the rules.
What the Experts Are Saying: "Moms and Dads need to sit down and work on a game plan. Rules for the household must be structured and agreed upon. The rules need to be simple enough for even the youngest family members to understand." "Consequences for infractions must be known in advance, must be fair and consistently administered by both parents. Many parents feel guilty about the lack of time they spend with their kids and don't want to have it "ruined" by disciplining them. Yet if you don't discipline them, the time you have with them can be very unpleasant."

The mysteries that we offer provide the fun without the problems. Here's what we mean . . . The Mysterious Case of A Quarterback in Space allows your teenage audience to figure out how and why the star quarterback was supposedly abducted by aliens right before the big game.

Click Here for a Legitimate Money Making Opportunity How To Help Your Kids Learn Important Life Skills Through Home Business by Henri Schauffler Would you like to find a willing, enthusiastic source of free or very inexpensive labor for your Internet Home Business? Would you like to find a fantastic way to help your children learn things like self discipline, goal setting, integrity, financial management and communication skills? Then read on, dear reader! What I'm getting at is, of course, the idea of involving your kids in your Internet home business, or helping them start one of their own. Instead of having them be a source of distraction and/or trouble as you labor to build your business, try a new approach - consider your children your potential allies and even potential employees. Also, consider the many character building benefits of involving kids in your home business. Steve Mariotti, Founder and President of The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE - http://www.nfte.com ) started a ground breaking program over two decades ago that set up disadvantaged New York City youth in modest businesses of their own, such as Manhattan hot dog carts. Here is their mission statement: "NFTE's mission is to teach entrepreneurship to low-income young people, ages 11 through 18, so they can become economically productive members of society by improving their academic, business, technology and life skills." To say the least, this program has been *extremely* successful.

uniquely ME! Survey Reveals Kids' Concerns September 16, 2003 A new RoperASW survey on self-esteem conducted for Unilever and Girl Scouts of the USA, in conjunction with their uniquely ME! New School Year Concerns Sixty-nine percent of pre-teens say they are worried about having harder homework. Sixty percent are worried about getting good grades, while 40 percent are worried about having a new teacher. Forty-three percent of pre-teens are "very/a little worried" about making their parents proud of them. The majority of pre-teens say they are "not at all worried" about having cool clothes (80 percent) or being cool (73 percent) and making new friends (73 percent). Only 4 percent of pre-teens say they are "very worried" about any of these issues. Just over half of children interviewed ages 8–9 (51 percent) say they are "very/a little worried" about other kids trying to get them to do things they shouldn't. Children in this age group are twice as likely as older children to say they are "very worried" about peer pressure (22 percent vs. 11 percent). Note: Three options were provided for these questions—"very worried," "a little worried," and "not at all worried." "Very/a little worried" is the total of "very worried" and "a little worried."

by David Teel, Avenida Network Sit down with your family and discuss the where, what, why and when's of media distribution through the home. Though some rooms may never have access to some sorts of media, wire for everything conceivable, as family members' needs may change, and you never know when you might be handing the keys over to the next inhabitants of your technology abode. Preparing your home's technology foundation requires an all encompassing view of your family's living habits now . . . and in the future. Home hot spots - your family's popular hang-out zones, need to be discussed in detail with your residential technology integrator before wiring your home. And while the family room, kitchen and home office are the first considerations for any home technology, don't forget "the kids' zone". Today's children are surprisingly advanced - quite fascinating to observe, actually (though my wife might argue this point, after I recently invited eight 5th graders over for family movie night). They grow incredibly fast, have a capacity to retain 45 special combination moves on every electronic game ever produced, know their way around a PC, and quickly become bored with anything older than 6 months in their room. What is the life expectancy of a new toy anyway?

The "big talk" is bigger than ever with kids wanting to know much more from their parents than just the "birds-and-the-bees." A new survey of parents and kids ages 10-15 conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Children Now , as part of a national initiative called Talking With Kids About Tough Issues finds that many families are still waiting too long and not talking enough when it comes to what their kids say they need to know.

Quite a bit, actually, if you're into that kind of analysis. As any professor of cultural studies will tell you, the degree of popularity of a celebrity is a kind of barometer for the social attitudes and trends they embody. A Martian would probably not have much trouble concluding from the Olsen phenomenon that American popular culture, or at least one element of it, is fascinated by expressions of taboo sexuality among pre-adults. He would also no doubt pick up on an emphasis on fashion and superficial beauty as prerequisites of a certain kind of status. At any rate, the picture he would get of Western civilization probably would not be terribly flattering. But we know all of that already. A slightly more interesting question, I think, would be, "What does the popularity of the Olsens among pre-teens, especially pre-teen girls, indicate about the future of American culture?"

Q: We are planning to spend 4 months in the Melbourne area, January through April 2002. We will be pulling our daughter (12 years old and quite mature) out of school for the period and essentially homeschooling her. She is very interested in nature and wildlife, and I am looking for educational tours or more extended programs in which she could participate. Do you have any suggestions? I've looked through a number of books and searched the Internet, and have ideas of interesting places to take her, but haven't been able to find many programs or educational activities. Thank you for any suggestions you might have. A: Good idea. I'm not sure exactly what you have in mind, but here are some thoughts. In Melbourne, you're near enough to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which has a wonderful kid-friendly visitor center and offers guided tours and other programs on a regular basis. You could check with the visitor center to see what programs would be available during the months you'll be around. You and your daughter may consider the state of Florida's Junior Ranger Program . In this program, kids volunteer at state parks and learn in the process. In the end, each Junior Ranger gets a badge. I think the closest state park participating in the Junior Ranger program is
