Fly into the eye of deadly hurricanes. Features information, facts and videos. Also includes hurricane safety tips.

Parents: Nationalgeographic.com Home Kids Home NG Kids Magazine NG Explorer Classroom Magazine ... HURRICANE PATHS FLYING INTO THE EYE OF A HURRICANE A monster storm with 150-mile- (241-kilometer-) an-hour winds churns west across the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists at the National Hurricane Center in Miami have tracked it for days using satellite images. Now they're worried it may threaten the United States. It's time for the "hurricane hunters" to go to work! All ships and airplanes have been warned away from this monster. But two four-engine airplanes, each carrying a flight crew and several scientists, now head toward the storm. Their mission? To collect data inside the hurricane that will tell meteorologists where the storm is going, when it will get there, and how violent it will be. As the planes struggle toward the eye, the pilots fight intense updrafts and downdrafts. The hurricane pelts the planes with rain and hail. Static electricity builds up and then discharges with a flash and a loud bang, causing the crew's hair to literally stand on end. "About the last 15 to 20 miles (24 to 32 kilometers) we get into the eye wall," says Greg Bast, a flight engineer, whose job it is to keep the plane's systems operating properly. "That's where we get banged around a lot."

Trick or Treat
General Halloween Safety
To get the most out of Trick or Treating, be safe and use Good Common Sense. Listed below are some general safety tips.
Parents, for a more detailed listing, select the Detailed Halloween Safety.
Costumes
Be sure your costume is NOT too long. You don't want to be tripping over it. If you wear a mask, be sure you can see out of it clearly Consider using FACE PAINT instead of a mask, because you will be able to see better. It is a good idea to wear clothing with reflective tape. Carry a white bag for your candy or a bag with reflective tape on it.
Trick or Treating
Be sure your parents know where you are going. Take along a couple of quarters for emergency phone calls. Go with a group or 3 or more people. If you feel unsafe, take along an adult. Do NOT ride a bicycle. Your costume could get hung up in it. Carry a Flash Light. Walk on a sidewalk. If a sidewalk is not available, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. Cross busy streets at a intersection or cross walk Be sure to look both ways (2 times) before crossing the street.

    -Kitchen Safety-
    Fire Prevention in the Kitchen
EACH YEAR, KITCHEN FIRES kill hundreds of people and injure thousands in North America. Most of these fires can be prevented by following the basic fire safety tips on this page.
    Don't leave cooking unattended
Never leave food cooking on your stove or in your oven when you leave home and stay in the kitchen whenever anything is cooking. Turn off stoves and appliances promptly when you're finished using them and unplug electrical appliances when they are not in use. Keep appliances clean Built-up grease catches fire easily. Wipe appliance surfaces after spills and clean stove surfaces and ovens regularly. Be alert Studies show that 42 percent of the people who have died in cooking fires were asleep. Do not attempt to cook if you have been drinking alcohol or are drowsy. Wear close-fitting sleeves Loose sleeves can dangle too close to hot stove burners and catch fire. Don't store things on or above your stove. Clothing can catch fire when you lean over stove burners to reach shelves.
