Kids Stuff for the Environment This site has been created for children, their parents, and teachers. An Affinity For Nature? Quite the opposite is true, though. Children, in order to truly understand the deep complexities of Nature, must be taught about every aspect of our environment, and gain a very strong foothold in science. Few things are what they seem. Even the simplest observations are not what they seem. Planets at night, to the untrained eye, are indistinguishable from stars billions of miles away. Cute animals are often dangerous, colorful ones, not only not toys, but poisonous. Most plants are toxic, though beautiful to look at. Almost everything we know as adults about Nature was wrested from it by long experience, trial and error (mostly error), and centuries of ferreting out what seems to be true from what isn't. Most of our knowledge of life on this planet is disjoined, episodic, and limited by the way our brain evolved to keep us alive. If we wish life to continue on this planet, learning about our environment must be as important as learning about math, history, and all the other things we learn in school.

Pupils and teachers from a dozen Boston-area schools who have been conducting ecological studies of the Charles and Mystic rivers will present their findings at a June 8 conference hosted by the Watershed Institute at Boston College, a year-old, non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and protecting urban watersheds while encouraging city youth to take the lead on environmental issues. The conference will bring together participants in a new pilot program in the public schools that Watershed Institute Co-directors Charles Lord and Maxwell Kennedy hope will be a national model for helping urban youth become environmental leaders in their own communities. Watershed Institute Co-directors Maxwell Kennedy (left) and Charles Lord. "The program is designed to get young people from urban areas involved in the outdoors so they will become advocates for the environment, so that what happened in the last generation will not happen again," said Kennedy. "The program is designed to get young people from urban areas involved in the outdoors so they will become advocates for the environment, so that what happened in the last generation will not happen again," said Kennedy, an environmental lawyer who is a son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.
