This page was last edited May 28, 2004 09:49 AM These are some links I've collected over the last year or two. I started out putting them in Access for my own use. As the list grew, I thought it might be useful to busy teachers, both here at C.S. and elsewhere, who don't have extra time to surf on their own. I hope they will be of some use. The links are in alphabetical order according to the topic. Please let me know if you have good links to add or if any of these links have expired. You can email me by clicking on my name. Thanks ;-) Lelia

NEWS
GREAT LINKS FOR THE KIDS THIS WINTER BREAK! School breaks around the holidays may leave many parents wondering how to entertain and educate their kids inside the house, especially if winter weather has you trapped. Fortunately, there are many resources on the web that parents can reference to occupy their children while sneaking in a little useful learning, as well. Kidscom.com offers a wide variety of games and activities, including cartoons, card makers, and video game shortcuts. Kidscom.com actually offers a bilingual version of "Concentration" that teaches children to translate colors between English and other languages. Yahooligans.com offers many different games and informative resources that are quite unique. Kids may browse a "Careers Section" which explains how different professions spend their days. For instance, children can learn what the day-to-day life of an Archeologist is like. Many adults are probably familiar with askjeeves.com , a search engine that allows users to type questions and retrieve websites that may answer those questions. The children's version of this site is ajkids.com

Our most recent recommendations Mysteries of Catalhoyuk - The Science Museum of Minnesota has mastered the trick of grabbing the attention of young people, and this exploration of Catalhoyuk is done in a colorful comic-book style. Puzzling artifacts have been found at this site in Turkey - thousands of clay balls, a goddess-like figurine in a grain storage area, burials beneath living quarters, bear paws, and murals. The archaeologists offer their interpretations, and invite input from kids, who can type in their thoughts. Mystery cards are designed to allow further investigation of a body found with owl pellets scattered about, and that of a baby buried with beads. Games, a virtual exhibit, animations, and slide shows add to a fresh, engaging look at what might have been the very first city. Rating: 10 out of 10

What is generative and component-based software engineering?
The goal of generative and component-based software engineering is to increase the productivity, quality, and time-to-market in software development thanks to the deployment of both standard componentry and production automation. One important paradigm shift implied here is to build software systems from standard componentry rather than "reinventing the wheel" each time. This requires thinking in terms of system families rather than single systems. Another important paradigm shift is to replace manual search, adaptation, and assembly of components with the automatic generation of needed components on demand. Generative and component-based software engineering seeks to integrate domain engineering approaches, component-based approaches, and generative approaches.

October 25, 2002: Hour Two, Part 2: Rosalind Franklin Program Summary Guests Related Articles and Links For Discussion ... SFKC Home Program Summary In 1962, British scientists James Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in recognition of their work in mapping the structure of DNA. Not mentioned, however, was a young Englishwoman without whose research the other three would never have achieved such a pinnacle. Rosalind Franklin, who died of cancer in 1958 at the age of 37, produced the first clear photograph of the double helix using a technique called x-ray crystallography. Watson and Crick used the photograph without Franklin’s knowledge to advance their own studies, and they published their results before Franklin had the chance. Rosalind Franklin’s contribution to DNA mapping was ignored for decades. Many people feel this snub was due to the misogynist attitude of the scientific world of that day as well as Franklin’s abrasive personality. Times have changed, though. The x-ray crystallography laboratory at London’s Birkbeck College is named after her, and Britain’s Royal Society has this year created the Rosalind Franklin Award, to be given to scientists who have made significant contributions to science, engineering, and technology.
