October 2002 Weekly Reader Teacher Companion Editions Pre-K Dear Teachers: One of this month's topics for the Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grade 1 editions of Weekly Reader is fire safety. Every year we cover this topic and consider it one of the most important issues of the year. Preparedness is critical in case of a fire. We hope we help your students and their families be prepared in such a case. We've included extension activities for the fire safety and other issues this month, as well as news in the world of education. We've also highlighted sections of the brand-new WeeklyReader.com and tips for using the Web site. Finally, our publisher shares some thoughts. Your feedback helps us continually improve our publications, so please share any thoughts you have about this newsletter or any other aspect of Weekly Reader.

29. Lesson 3: Packaging Tricks, Kindergarten To Grade 4.
3. Ask them, individually or as a group, to answer the following questions Have the kids create their own exciting packaging for an imaginary new cereal
http://www.cfc-efc.ca/docs/mnet/00001141.htm
An activity guide for children, 5 to 11 years of age. Objective To introduce children to the ways in which packaging is designed to attract kids. Children will learn:
  • awareness of the techniques used by advertisers to sell food products. beginning awareness of how they are affected by these techniques. an understanding that products may be similar, despite differences in packaging. an understanding of nutritional labelling on packages.
  • Preparation and Materials
  • Have the children each bring in empty food packages. Create "mystery products" by covering the brand names on several well-known food packages. Bring in a few sets of similar products, some name-brands, and one that is either a "store" brand product or from the "bulk foods" department.
  • The Lesson Guided Discussion: Packaging Explain to the children that advertisements are just one way to get a customer's attention. Another way is the packaging.
  • A good strategy in helping the children understand the importance of packaging is to have them imagine (or act out) a grocery store shelf with each product vying for the customer's attention. Have them imagine what they might do to make the customer choose them, and not the "product" next to them. Manufacturers might feature cartoon characters or famous people on the front of the package.

Erin's Grade 3 year would have begun in September if she were enrolled in school. She's never been to school, though, so when "Grade 3" starts, if ever, is anyone's guess. She's the quintessential unschooler, dabbling or immersing herself in what she is driven to learn, supremely self-directed and self-motivated, though not always, by any stretch, according to the pace, scope or sequence schools use.
Recently Erin performed at the really big theatre in Nelson. What a great experience! In terms of "schoolish pursuits", Erin now has a few workbooks on the go. She wrapped up the last of her Miquon Math program over the summer and has continued with Singapore Math in fits and starts. She's now comfortable with multi-digit multiplication and long division and has moved quickly from Singapore 3A to 4A in the past couple of months, and is showing no sign of slowing down. She's also working with integers and polynomials in the "Alge-Tiles" algebra program. She's made grade strides in printing and cursive handwriting in the past six months using the Getty-Dubay Italic workbook series. She does some music theory workbook stuff from time to time, and a bit of musicology work to accompany her piano workbook. We've also delved a bit into some systematic world history using Susan Wise-Bauer's "Story of the World" as a basis, and the Kingfisher Encyclopedia of history, various other reference books, projects and historical fiction to augment our readings.
