COURSE MATERIALS Sketch book (Strathmore Sketch Book 400 series, 9 x 12, 100 sheets (available in WWC Bookstore), set of 12 colored pencils, set of water color paints, container of rubber cement. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course builds on the artistic and creative abilities of those who plan to teach or work with elementary aged children in public school classrooms or other community settings. The course presents an integrated approach to the arts including (as does The North Carolina Standard Course of Study) visual arts, music, theater arts, and dance/movement. Students will examine a range of literature exploring the connections between children's cognitive, social, and emotional growth and their experiences in the arts. Students plan and implement arts activities designed to support and enhance conceptual development in the elementary curriculum areas of language arts, math, science, social studies, health, and physical education. Particular emphasis is placed on the arts as expression of culture and on employing art activities to teach the value of cultural diversity

FINE ARTS SITES Art History Resources on the Web
Professor Chris Witcombe of Sweet Briar College has been maintaining and enlarging this great set of links since 1995. It's just a bit more extensive than a similar page, the Mother of All Art History Links listed below. Art Teacher Connection
From teacher Bettie Lake, this page again focuses on visual arts, with emphasis on introducing technology to art education. There are many links to lesson plans, art history, and integration of arts into other curriculum areas. This site does more with photography than most visual art lists. Artcyclopedia
This is yet another great collection of sites devoted to the visual arts. I like the "Top 30" where you can find the work of favorites like Picasso, van Gogh, and Monet. The monthly feature is a nice overview of a kind or period of art, with an archive of about 18 articles. There is also a link list of art museums worldwide and a collection of other art sites. Getty ArtsEdNet
This site and the ArtsEdge have many similarities. I like this one just a bit better. The design is friendlier. The content is a little more extensive. This site also sticks to art more than the Kennedy Center site does, which is what the designers know best. As with ArtsEdge, most of the content is in the form of lesson plans and links, all connected to a set of articulated standards. The "Special Features" are exceptionally good.

Sustaining Change
A Fine Arts Fix to a Time Design Flaw by Kay D. Woelfel and John G. Conyers The National Education Commission on Time and Learning reported that " . . . the time available in a uniform six-hour day and a 180-day year is the unacknowledged design flaw in American education" (1994). One Illinois school district not only recognized this fact, but offered a fine arts fix to the flaw. Acknowledging the Commission's recommendation that schools need to allow teachers time to "retool themselves and reorganize their work," School District 15 in Palatine, IL, implemented an innovative program that increased both fine arts instruction for the students and preparation time available for the teachers. It was a one-two punch...but how did they do it?
The Fine Arts Instruction Team
Teacher Planning Time
One fourth grade teacher shared, "While the fine arts team is working with students, I found the meeting time with colleagues to be extremely valuable. Our 3rd and 4th grade teachers reviewed the recent results of the Illinois Standards Achievement Test to determine strengths and weaknesses and adjust our curriculum accordingly." Another bonus for the classroom teachers is that the fine arts teachers are professionals who deliver a specific curriculum aligned with Illinois State Learning Standards. As one classroom teacher observed, "this is not like having a substitute teacher where I would need to provide lesson plans. This is a regular staff member who provides students with high interest fine arts standards-based instruction."
