In 1999, our school was completely renovated with the addition of eighteen classrooms, a new cafeteria, gymnasium, media center, and arts complex. Today, Pine Street School has close to 630 students and a faculty of approximately 55 teachers and support staff. We have a principal, assistant principal, two guidancecounselors, an instructional facilitator, nurse, and Reading Recovery teacher. We are also a designated Reading Recovery training site. Our curriculum has kept pacewith the demands of today’s society. We have a thirty-station Josten’s Computer Lab, which serves all students in the school. Each classroom is wired for six computer drops. We have over 150 computers in the school and the school and district are fully networked. The Fine Arts are an integral component to the success of Pine Street. Our school offers art, music, physical education, and dance to all students. Strings and band are offered to students in grades 5 and 6 two days a week. Many of the students have participated in various concerts and athletic events during the year, or they have participated in some form of performance or visual art exhibition each year.

Judith Feola
Lakewood Elementary School, Rockville, Maryland Subject: Art Education
Grade: K-6 "Lakewood students and teachers have been 'turned on' to the use of cameras in all phases of the curriculum."
Purpose and Description of Project
Judith Feola's overall project was designed to document and disseminate information on the interrelated arts program at her school. It resulted in a slide/tape presentation that combined pictures of numerous activities used to infuse the arts (music, drama, the visual arts, and dance/movement) into the curriculum at specific grade levels. Lakewood Elementary School used an interdisciplinary approach to incorporate the arts into the curriculum and to develop basic skills and meet individual needs in a creative and expressive way.
Activities
The classroom teacher and the art specialist planned lesson activities that would relate an art form to a specific curriculum area. Each lesson involved using the camera , either for creative expression or for documentation. Students received instructions on using and handling the particular camera available for that lesson. Many individual activities contributed to the outcomes of the overall project. It would be difficult to describe all of them in detail here. Following are summaries of two representative lessons.

Your Guide to Parenting of K-6 Children
Sign up for my Newsletter Children with high Visual-Spatial Intelligence are the artists among us. These children think in pictures and images. They tend to perceive the environment holistically, storing information in a non-sequential fashion, revealing the strength of their right-brain processing. Their rich internal imagery makes them very imaginative and creative. They are the visual learners. They like posters and pictures and movies and other visual presentations of new information. They are daydreamers, sometimes becoming so engrossed in their own internal "movie" that they don't seem aware of the external environment. But, don't be fooled. They are also keen observers of the world around them, noticing subtleties and details that most of us miss. They also have an excellent awareness of space, the orientation of their body and others. This spatial awareness gives them skills in drawing, doing puzzles, mazes, and any task that requires fine-motor manipulation.
