Interview 1 FREE recipe Interview 2 ... FREE craft Sue:
Arlette N. Braman, the author of the wonderful kids' cookbook Kids Around the World Cook! shares both international recipes and culture with the kids and a real love for food.
Her book is a terrific starting point for kids to learn how to cook. Not only are the recipes easy to prepare but they are very exciting and varied. Arlette's own childhood fueled her interest in preparing meals with international flavors and ultimately in writing Kids Around the World Cook!. With both of her parents being outstanding cooks along with her Polish, French and Spanish heritages she experienced dynamic dining. Mealtime was an event of colors, textures and flavors from around the world. Arlette has focused the recipes in her book on foods from other lands. The information and recipes in Kids Around the World Cook will give children an instant around the world tour of countries and a taste of foods from many cultures. She wants kids to know about what children eat in different countries.
Not only does her book Kids Around the World Cook teach about cooking it also teaches about culture. Her "tasty tidbits" are little "bites" of information about the recipe the child is preparing. For example, Arlette offers up what other people eat with chilled soups in her recipe for Polish Strawberry Soup. These tidbits are excellent points of interest as they can broaden a child's culinary horizon.

Hey kids, if the grown-ups are having a party, make off with the corn chips and whip up your own party food - yummy nachos. Nachos are quick to make and there's hardly any washing up. You could have them as a snack or a meal even if there's no party! Ask a grown-up to turn the oven on and off and to get the hot plate out safely.
    You'll need:
    1/2 cup three bean mix
    2 cups corn chips
    1/4 cup taco sauce
    1/4 cup chopped avocado
    1/3 cup grated mozzarella cheese
    1 tbsp sour cream*
Here's how: First, ask a grown-up to turn the oven to 180C and get out a special ovenproof plate - ordinary dinner plates will crack in the heat. 1. Put the beans in a colander and rinse with water, then put the beans in a bowl and mash them with a fork. 2. Spoon the mashed beans into the centre of the ovenproof plate.

Want to make yourself a yummy treat? These scrumptious chocky chunks are really easy. Here's a fun recipe to make in the hols. If you make it on a hot day be prepared to eat fast!
    Preparation time: 20 minutes
    Total cooking time: 3-4 minutes
    Makes about 25 pieces
    You'll need:
    400g dark chocolate, chopped
    250g mixed coloured marshmallows
    1 cup unsalted roasted peanuts
100g glacé cherries, halved 1/2 cup desiccated coconut (optional) Here's how: 1. Line the base and sides of an 18 x 28cm rectangular tin with foil or baking paper. 2. Put the chocolate in a medium-sized china bowl. Heat a small saucepan of water until the water is simmering (you might want to ask an adult for help). Place the bowl over the simmering water and stir the chocolate until it has completely melted and is smooth. Take the saucepan off the stove, but leave the bowl on top so that the chocolate stays soft. 3. Spread about one-quarter of the melted chocolate over the base of the tin - don't make it too smooth, it's better if it's a bit rough. Sprinkle the marshmallows, nuts and cherries over the chocolate and press them in lightly so that they stick. If you're using it, sprinkle the coconut over the top.

No-holds-barred kids’ cooking
By Jamie Oliver I’ve always loved cooking with kids. Now, as a new father of two young ones just 13 months apart, I’m looking forward to having a laugh with them in the kitchen and inspiring them to take an interest in what they eat.
Of course, sometimes kids get too interested, meaning that cooking with them is also about wiping, sweeping, mopping, washing, drying and ironing.
I don’t think enough responsibility for cooking is given to kids; maybe it’s because parents are always worried about them making a mess. Go ahead — let kids get their hands in the food. While it’s important to watch out for heat, knives, machinery and the like, there’s still a load of bashing, smashing, squeezing, tossing and drizzling to be done. Smush-Ins
When I was a kid, my sister and I would try to defrost our hard ice cream in our dessert bowls into almost a thick milkshakey consistency. We realized that many flavors could be smushed in. Anything could be a contender, from maple syrup to bashed-up chocolate chips, meringue or fruit — you name it, we would smush it!
Get a big pot of vanilla ice cream and a selection of possible smush-ins.

Would you cut a raw potato into French Fries and bake the pieces in the oven? If you did, the pieces would be cooked, but soft and without the crispy outside that people like. Would you make a Thanksgiving turkey by putting it in a pot of simmering water? If you did, it would take a long time to cook and it would not have a crispy outside. Would you grill a cupcake? If you did, it would take a long time to cook the inside and outside would get pretty black by the time it was finished. Each piece of food you make will turn out best by cooking it a certain way.
