WebMD Feature Archive Reviewed By Michael Smith, MD on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 Kicking Your Way to Fitness May 1, 2000 (Reno, Nev.) Every few years, a new class takes the fitness world by storm. In the late eighties Jane Fonda and her ponytail-bobbing, leg-warmer-wearing aerobics classes were all the rage. In the early nineties, the step bench was introduced and heart-pounding step aerobics quickly became the yardstick by which all other sweat-and-spandex endeavors were measured. Now there's cardio-kickboxing, offered by nearly 80% of health clubs nationwide. Sometimes called boxing aerobics or just plain kickboxing, cardio-kickboxing is a hybrid of boxing, martial arts, and aerobic dance that offers a high-intensity, aggression-releasing workout without the mind-numbing boredom that can come with some other gym-bound activities. But even this fad comes with a drawback: While its popularity continues to rise, so do reports of injuries. With cardio-kickboxing, it's especially wise to get some basic training info before you start throwing punches.

Then cardio-kickboxing may be for you. Cardio-kickboxing invaded the nation's health clubs with startling speed. According to a 1998 member survey by the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), a nonprofit trade group, 78 percent of 2,913 health and fitness clubs in the United States offered cardio-kickboxing classes. A few years earlier, cardio-kickboxing barely existed. "Many trends in the fitness industry gradually take hold, whereas kickboxing really came in and just blew everyone away," says IHRSA spokesperson Maeve McCaffrey. PDT Self-Defence (also known as VICTOR) is a system developed from and based on the Street Self-Defence System pioneered by Dave Turton 8th Dan, combining elements of PDT Kickboxing. Step aerobics used for steady state fat burning. This class focuses on cardio for the first half of the class. The remainder of the class uses weights and bands to tone and firm your body. Pilates for core strength. Step Interval Step aerobics is combined with weights and bands to create intervals of both cardio and toning. This class format allows for a large amount of calories to be expended and then increasing the amount of fat burned during rest. PYS Pilates We will use pilates as the main concentration of the class and end with deep yoga stretches.
