102. Mt. Kenya Environment

http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Island/8543/enviro.html
Mount Kenya, at 5199 m, is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania at 5895 m is the highest. The central twin peaks, Batian (5199 m) and Nelion (5188 m) can only be accessed by climbing, whereas the third highest peak, Point Lenana (4985 m) can usually be ascended by a suitably equipped walker. The mountain was gazetted a National Park in 1949.
When you visit Mount Kenya, you visit an absolutely unique environment. It is actually so unique that it has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The high altitude equatorial environment has led to the evolution of several specially adapted species of plants, animals and birds. In the 700 square kilometre park are 81 plant species found only on Mt. Kenya, as well as a wide variety of wildlife.
GEOLOGY
Mount Kenya is an extinct volcano, 50 km in diameter at the base, that was built up by intermittent volcanic eruptions 3.1 to 2.6 million years ago. What remains now as the central peaks was the core of the volcano, all the crater rim having been eroded away. Originally the summit of Mount Kenya must have reached well over 6,500 metres.
Lying only 20 km from the equator, there are nevertheless numerous glaciers because of the high altitude climate, although these all have receded significantly in the past two decades

The need to have an electoral administration was realized as early as 1963 when the Kenya Independence Order-in-Council was made. The Independence Constitution, which was in Schedule 2 of that Order-in-Council, created an Electoral Commission with the Speaker of the Senate as Chairman. Other members were:-
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, as Vice-Chairman
A member appointed by the Governor-general in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister
Member representing each of the 8 Regions appointed by the Governor-general in accordance with the advice of the President of the respective Regional Assembly.
Over the years the Commissions structure and responsibilities have changed in order to accommodate the conduct of free and fair elections undertaken by an independent electoral body.

Death toll rises in Kenya crash
NAIROBI, Kenya The death toll in a crash involving two buses on a bridge has risen to 14, police say. Twenty-seven passengers were injured in Sunday's collision, which happened above a crocodile-infected river. But dozens more are feared dead and local media said the death toll could rise to 100. "We fear there are many more trapped inside the vehicles," a police spokesman in Nairobi said. The Daily Nation newspaper said rescue operations were being hampered by the dark and a lack of emergency rescue equipment. Up to 100 volunteers had helped by working by the headlights from a truck provided by a local businessman. "We are helpless," local government official Patrick Osare told the Nation . "There is nothing we can do." Police say the two buses were travelling south from the coastal town of Malindi to the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa when they collided on a bridge over the Sabaki River, 60 miles north of Mombasa.

Although this page is titled 'wildlife', only birds are shown. This is because there are many other good homepages dedicated to African wildlife photographs. Therefore, I decided to show birds first, then later, I'm going to add some favorite photos of mammals. I have seen more than 500 species of birds in Kenya, Tanzania and some other countries, and taken pictures of probably more than 300 species. Explanations are still Japanese only in many pages (I'm trying to translate them in English), though, you may still enjoy photographs! Partnership Ministry Teams About Us ... Contact Us By Josh Jackson, Fall 2001
Kidogo kidogo hujaza kibaba. That Swahili proverb, translated, "Slowly by slowly fills the pot," was a common refrain on my visit to Nairobi, Kenya, where Dr. Tom Olewe's VIPs Ministry is seeking to bring change to the lives of the youth in the Mathare slum. Slowly by slowly, things are changing. The biggest transformation can be seen in a group of young men who play on the VIPs soccer team, serve as community health workers and are developing their own micro-businesses to become self-reliant. It's difficult to imagine these polite, creative and intelligent youth in their glue-sniffing, crime-ridden pasts, but Tom is reminded all too often of the temptations and struggles that remain.

Explanation of the flag
The flag was adopted on 12 December 1963. It is based on the black over red over green flag of KANU (Kenya African National Union) that led the fight for freedom. The colors symbolize black majority, blood and natural wealth. On independence the white fimbriation was added, symbolizing peace. The defence of freedom is symbolized by a traditional Masai shield and two spears.
Zeljko Heimer, 24 Feb 1996 ] designates this flag to be the state ensign too (i.e. CSW/CS-)
Zeljko Heimer, 15 Jan 2001 National Flag and Jack.
The national flag is a black-red-green tricolor with white fimbriations and overall a Masai shield and two white spears. The shield is red with black flanks and a white disk in the middle and four white charges. The Album 2000 is the first place where I see the constrruction details for this flag, and it defines the ratio of three stripes as 6+1+6+1+6. I guess that there may have existed also detailed construction sheet of the central emblem too.
