By E. S. Atieno Odhiambo, Rice University Department of History, n.d. The historiography of Mau Mau, Kenya's anti-colonial revolt of the 1950s has been totally revised during the last decade toward the event itself as it happened on the ground. This greatly influenced by the long-unpublished thesis by Greet Kershaw, and so its publication at long last is most welcome, particularly for what it says about Mau Mau as experienced in two villages in southern Kiambu District.

quotes about history key testimonies featuring history Historical references are mainly about how the Sabaot came to inhabit Mount Elgon and the long-term conflict with the Bukusu. Several narrators have clear memories of life under colonial rule, and the fight for independence. They describe how things changed after independence. Many highlight their exploitation by white settlers and the loss of land, but more than one paints a positive picture of the colonialists, and several feel that white oppression was exchanged for worse oppression by the Bukusu. Some feel the settlers supported the Bukusu, and so increased Sabaot vunerability to Bukusu dominance. Several remember missionaries introducing Christianity and education, and the unease many felt about the threat this posed to their culture. One narrator talks about the Second World War and how some Sabaot participated: "Some were not lucky to come back. But many of them came back with money. People who were originally poor were able to buy livestock…. The Second World War gave us an opportunity to send people out to other communities so that they could see how other people do their things. [It] opened up the eye of our people." (Kenya 15)

Country Info Kenya Introduction Kenya General Data Kenya Maps Kenya Culture ... Kenya Time and Date Kenya History Back to Top Fossils found in East Africa suggest that protohumans roamed the area more than 20 million years ago. Recent finds near Kenya's Lake Turkana indicate that hominids lived in the area 2.6 million years ago. Cushitic-speaking people from northern Africa moved into the area that is now Kenya beginning around 2000 BC. Arab traders began frequenting the Kenya coast around the first century A.D. Kenya's proximity to the Arabian Peninsula invited colonization, and Arab and Persian settlements sprouted along the coast by the eighth century. During the first millennium A.D., Nilotic and Bantu peoples moved into the region, and the latter now comprises three-quarters of Kenya's population. The Swahili language, a mixture of Bantu and Arabic, developed as a lingua franca for trade between the different peoples. Arab dominance on the coast was eclipsed by the arrival in 1498 of the Portuguese, who gave way in turn to Islamic control under the Imam of Oman in the 1600s. The United Kingdom established its influence in the 19th century. The colonial history of Kenya dates from the Berlin Conference of 1885, when the European powers first partitioned East Africa into spheres of influence. In 1895, the U.K. Government established the East African Protectorate and, soon after, opened the fertile highlands to white settlers. The settlers were allowed a voice in government even before it was officially made a U.K. colony in 1920, but Africans were prohibited from direct political participation until 1944.

Exploring Kenya
Africa Homepage Geographia Homepage K enya is still the primary focus of all adventure travel in Africa. It is one of the finestand undoubtedly the most famoussafari destination in the world. Safari , however, is by no means the only reason to visit Kenya, for the attractions of its rich culture and diverse environments are considerable. Kenya is situated right along the equator, on the eastern coast of the African continent. Its coastal region is on the southeast, and to the east lies Somalia. Ethiopia is to the north, the Sudan to the northwest, and Uganda directly to the west. The southwestern border of the country is marked by Lake Victoria, and southward lies Tanzania. Kenya's geography is marvelously varied. While much of northeastern Kenya is a flat, bush-covered plain, the remainder of the country encompasses pristine beaches, scenic highlands and lake regions, the Great Rift Valley, and the magnificent Mount Kenya. Although Kenya's varied environments experience a wide variety of climate conditions, the temperature remains comfortably warm year-round. Much of Kenya experiences heavy rainfall from March through May and, to a lesser extent, from October through December. The best time for most outdoor acitivities (including safari and mountain climbing) is during the dry season (June-September).

Mayence Bent was the original owner of what was then known as Stanley Hotel, which she started on Victoria Street (later Tom Mboya street) in1902. In 1905, she moved the hotel to larger premises on Government road (later Moi Avenue). In 1909,
Mayence and her new husband, Fred Tate whom she married a few years after her separation from her first husband, bought two corner sites located on Sixth Avenue and by 1913, the Tate's New Stanley opened on the hotel's present location.
The Block Family bought the hotel from Mayence Tate in 1947 although she still maintained financial interest. Her husband Fred had passed away in 1937, and much of Mayence's will to continue involving herself with the hotel's affairs and management was diminished with his death.

Before the coming of the white man, land was the most important possession in Kenya - " . . . the land is the source of all livelihood" (Oginga Odinga, former Kenyan vice president). Land meant freedom, and land became the focal point of the struggle between white settlers and indigenous Africans. Kenya, the second program in the three-part series No Easy Walk, traces the sociopolitical history of that East African nation from the arrival of the first colonialists in the late 19th century through independence in 1963. While not as vibrant as the other programs, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, the production nevertheless succeeds at portraying the evolution of resistance from peaceful protest to armed confrontation.

A second group followed around 1000 BC and occupied much of central Kenya. The rest of the ancestors of the country's medley of tribes arrived from all over the continent between 500 BC and 500 AD. The Bantu-speaking people (such as the Gusii, Kikuyu, Akamba and Meru) arrived from West Africa while the Nilotic speakers (Maasai, Luo, Samburu and Turkana) came from the Nile Valley in southern Sudan. As tribes migrated throughout the interior, Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula and Shirazis from Persia (now Iran) settled along the East African coast from the 8th century AD onwards. Drawn by the whiff of spices and money, the Portuguese started sniffing around in the 15th century. After venturing further and further down the western coast of Africa, Vasco da Gama finally rounded the Cape of Good Hope and headed up the continent's eastern coast in 1498. Seven years later, the Portuguese onslaught on the region began. By the 16th century, most of the indigenous Swahili trading towns, including Mombasa, had been either sacked or occupied by the Portuguese - marking the end of the Arab monopoly of Indian Ocean trade. The Portuguese settled in for a long period of harsh colonial rule, playing one sultan off against another. But their grip on the coast was always tenuous because their outposts had to be supplied from Goa in India. Control of the coast was won back by the Arabs in 1720.

Global Snapshots - Kenya: coping with a history of corruption Kenya is a fine example of a country which, at first glance, may appear like paradise: from golden sands and clear blue ocean, to herds of wildebeest and sprawling savannah it makes the perfect tourist destination. But on closer inspection, Kenya is struggling to cope with a post-colonial history of government corruption and deep rooted tribal rivalries. Poverty, inequality, and unemployment are endemic. The basic infrastructureroads, telephones, railways, and the electricity supplyis in disrepair.1 The same is true of the country's healthcare system. There is a mix of private and public health care on offer. The Ministry of Health has built a pyramidal health referral system extending from the Kenyatta National Hospital in the capital, Nairobi, through provincial and district hospitals to rural health centres in major towns and dispensaries in most rural locations. Much of the time, however, the resources and medicines are simply not available.

History Pre-history (100,000 - 2 million years ago): Relics and practices of stone age civilizations have been found at Koobi Fora, near Lake Turkana, Hyrax Hill in Nakuru town and several other sites. Some of the stone age tools, pottery and other artifacts have been left in exact places where they were found and are used as open air museums for the general public to visit and see. Early history: This was the period of invasion and occupation by the current Bantu, Nilotic and Cushitic groups. They spread and settled in Kenya from different parts of Africa. The Arabs established themselves at the Kenyan coast in the 7th century, followed by the Portuguese (1600 - 1700 A.D.) and once again the Arabs. Colonial Period: European rivalry paved way for the partitioning and colonisation of East Africa by the British and Germans. Kenya was declared a British Protectorate in 1895 and the country was renamed Kenya Colony and Protectorate in 1920. The early colonial administration decided to turn Kenya into a "whiteman's" country leading to acquisition of vast tracts of fertile land in the so called " white highlands". The African resistance to colonial rule started in 1920s, but it was intense in the 40s and 50s during the "mau mau" uprising. Era of Independence: In June, 1963, Kenya attained internal self-government (Madaraka) and on 12th December of the same year, it achieved independence (Jamhuri). Kenya's first President (Founding Father of the Nation) was Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. He died in August 1978 and the then Vice-President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi succeeded him. Regular elections have been an important feature of Kenyan political life as demonstrated in the general elections of 1969, 1974, 1979, 1983, 1988 and the multi-party elections of December 1992 where eight political parties participated. dk433 August 1996

History of Horses in East Africa
Written by Tony Church Horses are not indigenous to Africa south of the Abyssinian Highlands and the Horn of Africa. In the past, any horse which ventured southwards from Kenya's arid northern region was soon an unfortunate victim of the fatal African horse disease or Trypanosomiasis. When European missionaries, pioneers and hunting parties penetrated the interior, they travelled mostly on foot or by ox-wagon. One of these early adventurers was Lord Delamere, sometimes known as the Red Baron from stately Vale Royal in Cheshire. He later became the flamboyant leader of the British settler community. Delamere first visited what is today the highlands of Kenya in 1897 by way of Berbera in Somaliland and south across the baking hot Chalbi Desert. His main purpose was to hunt big game. His caravan of bearers, trackers and askaris (guards) were supported by tough little Somali ponies indigenous to the Horn of Africa and the highlands of Ethiopia. Ponies that survived the long journey and reached the crisp, clean, disease-free air of the Kenya highlands were among the first horses to be brought to East Africa. Subsequent Europeans who ventured to East Africa to take up land brought their thoroughbred horses from the British Isles, only to have most of them succumb to a host of African diseases. So settlers soon cross-bred imported horses with hardy, sure-footed Somali ponies and started what was to become a substantial herd of resilient country bred horses, adapted to conditions prevailing in East Africa.
