HISTORY: SETTLERS, HUNTERS AND SPORTSMEN (1902-1919)
The Uganda railway was at last open. The era of the great explorations was left behind and it was now possible to breathe the Highlands' air travelling from Mombasa in just one day, comfortably seated and avoiding the plentiful calamities suffered by the ancient adventurers. Africa offered herself to whoever wished to start all over in the Garden of Eden. The issue was then how to attract enough settlers to generate a volume of goods to make the costly railroad profitable. However, the Garden of Eden was not made for all. The lack of development and infrastructures in these early days meant accepting the life of a pioneer, with scarce comforts, hard work, health risks and starting from scratch. Agriculture destined for exports was envisioned as the only feasible activity in the Highlands, fertile but lacking great mineral beds or natural resources, where the internal market was still fairly undeveloped. Settlers started to populate the country in 1902, coming mostly from Great Britain, but also from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. In many cases they were sons of the English aristocracy in search of the romantic African dream, of live to hunt and hunt to live. Others wished to settle down, take roots and find fortune in that virgin country. Soon the first farms appeared on the lands traditionally belonging to the native people, partly unpopulated due to tribal warfare and nomad pastoralism. Land was offered at very low prices, with the only requisite of culturing 16 acres each year.

HISTORY: THE FIRST MIGRATIONS (50,000 B.C.-500 A.D.)
50,000 years ago, clans of Homo sapiens dwelled in Eastern Africa. They hunted and repelled their enemies using stone-carved axes and spearheads fixed to wooden handles. Leather for making garments was tanned using bone tools, and the first containers for storing wild grain and other food items were manufactured in this period. These hunters-gatherers used natural elements for body painting, including red ochre for their hair and skin, and they developed complex rituals for burying their dead. Centuries came and go, and they started to develop social and communication structures, to practise rudimentary kinds of trading and to build villages where they reared domestic animals. Geographic differences resulted in distinct sources of raw materials and food, giving rise to civilizations with particular customs and ways of life. Some prehistoric sites in Kenya include Gamble's Cave, Njoro River Cave and Hyrax Hill, just outside Nakuru. It was 6,000 years ago when the first invasions came to disturb the peace of the plains' hunters-gatherers. Due to climatic changes in Northern Africa, Cushite and Nilotic pastoral tribes moved south searching for better pastures. Technically and militarily superior, Cushites and Nilotes easily seized the East African natives. Shortly after, around 500 B.C., the Bantus entered from the west.

A Brief History of Kenya About 2.5 million years ago Homo habilis lived in the rich fertile rift valley. By 50,000 BC Homo erectus had emerged and Stone age cultures spread over this area. The forefathers of Homo sapiens became hunter gatherers. Cushitic- speaking agro-pastoral people from the north, Ethiopia, and pastoral Nolites followed from the Nile valley moved across during 3000 to 1500 BC.
Bantu speaking cattle herders and cultivators came from Sudan and West Africa between 500 BC and 500 AD. By about 800 AD Omani-Arab traders operated down the east African coast, under the Sultan of Zanzibar, and intermarried with the Bantu creating the Swahili culture.
In the 16th and 17th Centuries the Portuguese gained control of coastal trade, but Arab resistance saw their power restored
During 1780 and 1850 Britain, France Germany and America established trading concessions with Zanzibar, but by 1895 Kenya had become a British protectorate. During the late 1890s and early 1900s the Kenya- Uganda railway was built and a white settler community was established.
When Kenya became a British colony in 1919, organized African political activity developed. By 1944 KANU (Kenya African National Union) had formed, and

The history of the Anglican church of Kenya begins in 1844 when the first missionary from the church missionary (CMS), Dr. Johann Ludwing Krapf arrived in Mombasa. He was joined two years later by Rev. Johann Rebman. The two CMS intended to link a CMS station was established at Rabai in the coastal region at the same time. The missionaries had to study and learn African languages in order to communicate and spread Christianity. This resulted in Krapf translated genesis 1-3 in Kiswahili. In 1847, Krapf translated genesis 1-3 in Kiswahili and visited Ukambani in an evangelistic exploration while Rebman visited Taita. In 1848, Krapf translated St. Luke’s gospel into Nyika (Rabai) and in 1850, St. Mark’s gospel into Kamba (some local languages). Three years later, Mringe a dying cripple became the first Anglican convert to be baptized. Later a colony was set up by CMS at free town for freed slaves. This became the venue for the baptism of the first giriama coverts.

Nature Kenya and EANHS - A history The Beginning A small group of scientists and amateur scientists met in Nairobi in 1909 and formed the "East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society". The Society's objective was to promote the study of natural history animals, plants and their environment. In those days, the study of natural history often meant collecting animals and plants. From the collections, species could be identified and distribution mapped. In 1910, the members of the EANHS rented a room to store their collections; this was the first Museum. As EANHS members gathered information, there was need to disseminate it. In 1910 the first Journal of the East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society was published. As the Journal of East African Natural History, published jointly by the Museum and the Society, it is now distributed all over the world.

The Kenya colony and protectorate was administrated by a Governor (under the Colonial Office), assisted by an EXECURIVE COUNCIL and a LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, the latter partially elected; elections were held within three groups, (i) Europeans of both genders, (ii) British Indian men and (iii) Arab men. Native Africans were denied vote and representation. In 1945 the population was established at 4,055,000 natives, 2,575 Somalis etc., 21,020 Arabs, 5,993 Goans, 78,558 Indians and 23,284 Europeans.
Mussolini's Italy entered World War II on the side of the Axis in June 1940, when German troops occupied France. Italian troops immediately invaded British Somaliland; Kenya again was a frontier country. In 1941 British forces went on the offensive, taking entire Italian East Africa.
Main export items were cotton, coffee, sisal hemp, hides and skins and tea. During the war years the Kenya Colony and Protectorate had a budget surplus.
In 1948, the EAST AFRICAN HIGH COMMISSION was founded, in 1961 the EAST AFRICAN COMMON SERVICES ORGANIZATION (member colonies Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika).
In 1947 the labour force was given at 272,599. Basic wages were given as 14s. to 19s. for unskilled agricultural labour (adult men), 58s. for skilled labour, 70s. to 80s. for drivers, over 100s. for clerical staff, 30s. to 50s. for domestic servants (Nairobi). Kenya - History
T he history of Kenya is very long and complex. From the "Cradle of Civilization" to present date, Kenya’s long history has been both varied and fascinating. Kenya's history dates back to many centuries from the internal Diaspora or the early settlements and migrations. Then came the formation of the various language groups who developed their own religions, traditions, governments and ruling systems in which they dictated their way of life and how they managed to keep alive by their trade and occupations. Then came the white settlers, which were followed by the fight for liberation, which gave birth to the Mau Mau freedom fighters and the rise of the Kenyan heroes. Kenya - Geography and Climate Kenya lies across the equator on the east of the African continent. Neighboring countries are Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to east Tanzania to south, Uganda to west and Sudan to northwest. Kenya covers an area of 582,646 square kilometers. The land stretches from the sea level (Indian Ocean) in the east, to 5,199 meters at the peak of the snow-capped Mount Kenya.
