RELATED 'Children covered in blood' Many clues Chat rooms warned of attacks Kenya's history of terrorism ... MOMBASA, Kenya (CNN) The car bombing outside a hotel in the Kenyan tourist city of Mombasa comes four years after a terrorist attack on an embassy in the eastern African country. A massive truck bomb exploded outside the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi on August 7, 1998. Simultaneously, another bomb went off outside the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The attacks killed 224 people and injured thousands. The United States brought four men accused of having links to Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network to trial for the attacks. They were jailed for life without parole. U.S. prosecutors indicted bin Laden in connection with the embassy bombings. Washington also blamed him and his al Qaeda group for the September 11 attacks on the United States last year.

Jomo Kenyatta:
The Kenya Africa Union is Not the Mau Mau
Speech at the Kenya African Union Meeting at Nyeri, July 26, 1952 Mau Mau is not truthful. We do not know this thing Mau Mau. We want to prosper as a nation, and as a nation we demand equality, that is equal pay for equal work. Whether it is a chief, headman or labourer be needs in these days increased salary. He needs a salary that compares with a salary of a European who does equal work. We will never get our freedom unless we succeed in this issue. We do not want equal pay for equal work tomorrow-we want it right now. Those who profess to be just must realize that this is the foundation of justice. It has never been known in history that a country prospers without equality. We despise bribery and corruption, those two words that the European repeatedly refers to. Bribery and corruption is prevalent in this country, but I am not surprised. As long as a people are held down, corruption is sure to rise and the only answer to this is a policy of equality. If we work together as one, we must succeed. Our country today is in a bad state for its land is full of fools-and fools in a country delay the independence of its people. K.A.U. seeks to remedy this situation and I tell you now it despises thieving, robbery and murder for these practices ruin our country. I say this because if one man steals, or two men steal, there are people sitting close by lapping up information, who say the whole tribe is bad because a theft has been committed. Those people are wrecking our chances of advancement. They will prevent us getting freedom. If I have my own way, let me tell you I would butcher the criminal, and there are more criminals than one in more senses than one. The policeman must arrest an offender, a man who is purely an offender, but lie must not go about picking up people with a small horn of liquor in their hands and march them in procession with his fellow policemen to Government and say he has got a

Kenya Government History : Please note that this information is taken from a variety of sources, and I cannot personally vouch for its accuracy. A number of people seem to get quite irate with some of the claims made in here, and want me to alter them. If you can direct me to a more authoritative source, I'd be glad to update it. KENYATTA Taa ya Kenya or Swahili for the 'Light of Kenya' was the man who brought the light of independence to Kenya. Indeed, he was a beacon, a rallying point for suffering Kenyans to fight for their rights, justice and freedom. His brilliance gave strength and aspiration to people beyond the boundaries of Kenya, indeed beyond the shores of Africa. Just as one light shines in total darkness and provides a raliying point, so did Ken-yatta become the focus of the freedom fight for Kenya over half a century to dispell the darkness and injustice of colonialism. Before matter can become light, it has to suffer the rigours of heat. So did Kenyatta suffer the rigorous of imprisonment to bring independence to Kenya. As the founding father of Kenya, and its undisputed leader, he came to be known as Mzee, Swahili for a respected eider. No chronology can adequately reflect the many sided achievements of Mzee Kenyatta. His life is the life of the free Kenya nation chronicled here.

  • The anthem page has been updated with a picture of President Mwai Kibaki (after receiving many emails about it). We may start selling some carvings, baskets, and other miscellaneous Kenyan stuff that my family brought back over the years. If we do this, we will set up a page with pictures and descriptions. The Kenya quizzes are still some of the most popular pages on the site.
Future of the site This site was one of the first Kenya sites on the web. As far as we know, only RC Bowen's page was up before ours, although a couple of others came online around the same time as ours. We built the majority of this site in 1996 and 1997, when we had much more time than we have now. We get a lot of email about Kenya and about linking to this site. We try to respond to as many as possible, but simply don't have time any more to do so. Also, we get a lot of questions about where to stay in Kenya, what it is like there, whether it is safe, etc. We haven't been to Kenya since 1989 and don't feel like we can honestly answer these questions anymore. We keep in touch with people there, but are no longer qualified to give advice or recommendations. Due to lack of time, there will probably be no more updates nor will we be responding to email (unless it's from a friend who found us through the site or it's just so interesting that we can't help but respond). What is here will remain here and occasional updates may occur (but no promises). There are a lot of great Kenya sites now that can provide current information or answer questions. Thanks for all the emails supporting the site and we are glad that so many people have enjoyed it.

Rugby was introduced into Kenya at the beginning of the 20th century by British settlers. Indeed before the 1970s rugby in Kenya was played mainly by people of European origin. The Kenya cup featured teams belonging to exclusive clubs such as Nairobi Sports club, Impala , Nondescripts , Kenya Harlequins and a farmers team from Eldoret. Mean Machine RFC a team representing the University of Nairobi was the first team consisting mainly of indigenous Kenyans to compete in the Kenya cup in 1977. Mwamba RFC formed in 1978 was Kenya's first independent team. The 1980s saw a significant rise in the popularity of the sport. However it was mainly concentrated in the Capital City Nairobi. Virtually all the teams participating in the Kenya cup and other KRFU organized tournaments were based in Nairobi. The sport was hardly played in any of the schools outside of Nairobi. Mwamba was the team of the early to mid eighties and 1983 is a year most Mwamba fans will never forget. That year captain Tom Oketch led a star studded Mwamba team which included the likes of Jimmy Owino, Arthur Kibisu, Pritt Nyandatt, Andy Kimwele and Andy Mwenesi among others to win the Kenya cup in grand style. The 4 th All Africa games was Kenya's first chance at testing their strength against other national teams in a competitive tournament. Kenya finished 3

MOMBASA, Kenya (CNN) The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency has received specific information of a possible imminent threat to U.S. interests in Kenya, intelligence sources told CNN Friday. This follows several high-profile incidents in the East African country, most recently a car bombing outside a hotel in the Kenyan tourist city of Mombasa last November. ( Travel warnings earlier this year In that instance, suicide bombers struck an Israeli-owned resort hotel in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa, killing 10 Kenyans and three Israelis. The same day, two missiles were fired at but missed an Israeli charter jet taking off from that city. Kenya - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman The early dates of prehistoric sites in Africa support the belief that this continent was the cradle of early man. An amazing discovery made by Kenyan anthropologist Richard Leakey at Koobi Fora along the shore of Lake Rudolf in Kenya confirmed that belief. Leakey and his fellow workers uncovered some 400 hominid remains, representing perhaps 230 individuals, making Koobi Fora the site of the richest and most varied collection of early human remains found in the world.
Here, apparently, was the cradle of man-the-toolmaker; deliberately shaped flints found beside the lake have been dated as 2.5 millions years old. In 1972 a dramatic new discovery was made on the eastern shore of the lake: the skull and leg bones of one of the creatures who made the tools, and probably man's earliest known ancestor.
Known as "1470 Man" (as he was coded by the anthropologists as "Skull 1470"), he was a hunter. He used a simple pebble-toola small natural stone from which flakes were chipped to leave a sharp cutting edge. The remains found at Lake Rudolf indicate that "1470 Man" could stand and walk upright, and is believed to be the direct ancestor of modern man.

... Africa /Kenya KENYA History and Government
History: Excavations in Kenya suggest that the region is the cradle of humanity, the home some 3.25 million years ago of Homo habilis , from whom Homo sapiens descended. What is certain is that, in more recent times, Kenya was the settling place of a huge number of tribes from all over Africa, with a long history of migration, settlement and conflict. During the following centuries, the region became prosperous on the profits of trade, and also as an entrepôt for commerce from the Indian Ocean. The Portuguese arrived in the early 16th century, and having wrested control of the area’s trade from the Arabs, absorbed Kenya into their commercial empire. By 1720 they had been driven out by the Arabs, and for the next two centuries the region was largely ruled by Omani Dynasties from Arabia. During the 1820s, a local power struggle led to the British being invited into the region by the Mazrui Dynasty, and by the middle of the century both the British and the Germans were competing for control of the coast and its hinterland during the second great colonial period. By the 1890s the threat of the Masai tribesmen had, by a mixture of diplomacy and war, largely been neutralised, and the British were able to penetrate into the highlands. The Mombasa to Uganda railway line was constructed at this time, and Nairobi owes its present importance to the fact that it was a convenient staging point on the edge of the highlands. It soon became the headquarters of the British administration.

Multi-party democracy.
International criticism of government behaviour developed into suspension of aid and support to Kenya. Within the state lawyers, religious groups and political leadership began to co-operate in demanding multi-party democracy. The combined pressures resulted in 1991 in the repeal by parliament of the constitutional clause making Kenya a one party state.
The elections in 1992 saw opposition parties winning 88 of the 200 seats in parliament. The government continued to divide the opposition, to deploy state assets to promote its own party political agenda and to play the ethnic/regional division card to keep control. By the time of the 1997 elections the opposition had increased its share of the seats to 109 out of 222 seats, but remained hopelessly divided.

During the 1950s and 60s, the anthropologist L. S. B. Leakey discovered in N Tanzania the remains of hominids who lived c.2 million years ago. These persons, perhaps the earliest humans on earth, most likely also inhabited S Kenya. In the Kenya highlands, the existence of farming and domestic herds can be dated to c.1000 B.C. Trade between the Kenya coast and Arabia was brisk by A.D. 100. Arabs settled on the coast during medieval times, and they soon established several autonomous city-states (including Mombasa, Malindi, and Pate). Farmers and herders traveled S from Ethiopia and settled in Kenya in c.2000 B.C. There is also evidence that Bantu-speaking people and Nilotic speakers from the S Sudan settled in Kenya between 500 B.C.

Greek sailors and traders seem to have traveled along the Kenyan coast by the 4th century AD, and these were followed by Arab, Persian, Indian, Indonesian and Chinese merchants. The Arabs built large settlements at Mombasa and Malindi along the coast, and it was the merging of African and Arab peoples and cultures along the coast that gave rise to the Swahili language and culture. The slave trade and the ivory trade formed the major commerce with the world beyond eastern Africa. The Portuguese briefly sought to establish a foothold at Mombasa, but the Arabs drove them out, and subsequently took control over the interior slave trade from the Kamba people. In the end, British intransigence and military advantage proved futile. The political, social and economic tides were turning towards independence throughout the world, even within Britain itself. In 1963, after three years of transitional government, Kenya became an independent state. At its head was its newly elected president, Jomo Kenyatta, who had long been a dominant figure in Kenyan politics. The new government, under President Mwai Kibaki, represents new hope for the Kenyan people. It also faces challenges greater than any Kenyan government that has gone before it. On top of the long-standing problems mentioned above, the AIDS epidemic is now taking an enormous human toll, and the years of governmental corruption and neglect have left most aspects of Kenya, including its educational system, in very poor condition. However, the new government is determined to tackle these challenges, and, for the first time in decades, Kenya has an opportunity to move freely forward.
