Essential Info Highlights Itineraries History For hundreds of years Kenya's coastal regions have been staging posts for different peoples and cultures, especially the Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula who came to trade and ultimately settle. The Arab grip on the economy was temporarily lost to the Portuguese who fought the Arabs in a series of naval bombardments and street battles between the 15th to 17th Centuries. However, with the Portuguese colonies stretching as far India, maintaining a forceful presence was a constant struggle and the Arabs wrestled back control of this coastal area. The Sultans of Oman then enjoyed a period of stability and economic expansion until the European colonialists, namely Britain and Germany, started to take an interest in the area. The Omani Sultan moved his power base to Zanzibar in 1832 and the British had made the coastal region a Protectorate by the end of the 19th Century. Meanwhile a number of European explorers arrived to explore the interior which became famous for its proud and fierce warrior tribes, in particular the Masai. After the construction of the famous 'Lunatic Express' railway from Mombasa to Lake Victoria the British based their colonial headquarters in Nairobi and so began the white settlement of the rich, fertile highlands.

Early History to Independence
During the 1950s and 60s, the anthropologist L. S. B. Leakey discovered in N Tanzania the remains of hominids who lived c.2 million years ago. These persons, perhaps the earliest humans on earth, most likely also inhabited S Kenya. In the Kenya highlands, the existence of farming and domestic herds can be dated to c.1000 B.C. Trade between the Kenya coast and Arabia was brisk by A.D. 100. Arabs settled on the coast during medieval times, and they soon established several autonomous city-states (including Mombasa, Malindi, and Pate). Farmers and herders traveled S from Ethiopia and settled in Kenya in c.2000 B.C. There is also evidence that Bantu-speaking people and Nilotic speakers from the S Sudan settled in Kenya between 500 B.C. and A.D. The Portuguese first visited the Kenya coast in 1498, and by the end of the 16th cent. they controlled much of it, including Mombasa. However, in 1729, the Portuguese were permanently expelled from Mombasa and were replaced as the leading power on the coast by two Arab dynasties: the Busaidi dynasty, based first at Masqat (in Oman) and from 1832 on Zanzibar, and the Mazrui dynasty, based at Mombasa. The Busaidi wrested Mombasa from the Mazrui in 1837. From the early 19th cent. there was long-distance caravan trading between Mombasa and Lake Victoria. In 1903, the first settlers of European descent established themselves as large-scale farmers in the highlands by taking land from the Kikuyu, Maasai, and others. At the same time, Indian merchants moved inland from the coast. In 1920, the territory was renamed and its administration changed; the interior became Kenya Colony and a coastal strip (10 mi/16 km wide) was constituted the Protectorate of Kenya. From the 1920s to the 40s, European settlers controlled the government and owned extensive farmlands; Indians maintained small trade establishments and were lower-level government employees; and Africans grew cash crops such as coffee and cotton on a small scale, were subsistence farmers, or were laborers in the towns (especially Nairobi).

HISTORY
Fossils found in East Africa suggest that proto- humans roamed the area more than 20 million years ago. Recent finds near Kenya's Lake Turkana indicate that the Homo genus of humans lived in the area 2.6 million years ago. Cushitic-speaking people, who occupied the area from about 1000 BC, received Arab traders by the first century AD. Kenya's proximity to the Arabian Peninsula invited colonization, and Arab and Persian settlements were founded along the coast by the eighth century AD. By then, Bantu and Nilotic peoples had moved into the area.
The Swahili language, a mixture of Bantu and Arabic, developed as a lingua franca for trade between the different peoples. Arab dominance was eclipsed by the arrival in 1498 of the Portuguese, who gave way in turn to Islamic control under the Imam of Oman in the 1600s. Britain established its influence in the 19th century. The colonial history of Kenya dates from the Berlin Conference of 1885, when the European powers first par-titioned East Africa into spheres of influence. In 1895, the British Gov- ernment established the East African Protectorate and, soon after, opened the fertile highlands to white settlers. The settlers were allowed a voice in government even before it was officially made a British colony in 1920, but Africans were prohibited from direct political participation until 1944.

One of the world's most historic events has started in Kenya and the reception the 2003 Kenya Airways East African Safari Rally crews received was akin to the glory days of the past.
Fifty years ago, Eric Cecil founded the East African Safari Rally and 53 crews took the start; on the 50 commemorate anniversary of an event conceived to mark the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, 53 crews once again crossed the ramp beneath the famous elephant tusk's on Moi Avenue in Mombasa in what can only be described as a fitting tribute.
After being flagged off by Najib Balala, Kenya's Minister of Sport, the crews headed northwest out of Mombasa in searing temperatures for the start of their 4,893 kilometre journey that will take them through some of the most remote yet spectacular terrain in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Today's opening leg covered three sections and nearly 200 competitive kilometres, half the distance of a regular three-day World Rally Championship event, and took the crews over a varied route, encompassing fast and flowing sections and the semi-desert terrain of the Taru before arriving at Taita Hills Salt Lick Lodge for the overnight halt. In landscape awash with giraffe, antelope, buffalo and elephants, the crews could not have had a greater welcome to Kenya.

The first written record of the Club that I can trace are notes of an informal meeting held on Wednesday 11th November, 1987 between Joe Harrison, Peter Tilbury, Sally Harrison and Anne Tilbury. From the content of the notes this was obviously not the 1st meeting , but at this meeting , a bank account was to be opened. Our logo had been designed as the printing of Application Forms and Membership Cards were being organized. The date of the inaugural meeting was set for mid January, 1988. The club had at this time applied for Registration with both the AA and the Registrar of Societies. The Constitution at this point had already been written and was being printed. The 1st official meeting of the Club took place in the Tinga Tinga Room in the Norfolk Hotel at 8.00 p.m. on the 14th January, 1988. 33 People had become members by then. 22 were present at the meeting and 10 non-members attended. At this meeting the constitution was approved, a committee was elected and future meetings were organized. Mr. Joe Harrison was elected 1st Chairman but unfortunately he left for England in August. Peter Tilbury took over. The Club’s 1st Outing was in March, 1988 to the Turaco Club for a B.B.Q. lunch. A fantastic turn out was noted. By April, the Club Membership had grown to 69 and in May, the Venue for Socials had been changed to the Jacaranda Hotel. During the 1st year the Club organized monthly meetings plus outings much as we do today. The 1st Club Annual Run was held in October, 1988 to Naivasha with 42 entrants starting from various towns in Kenya. By December of this 1st year membership reached 101. The 1st AGM was held on February, 9th, 1989 at the Jacaranda and 27 members were present.

History
Historical Setting
[General Background] The history of Kenya as a political entity began with the region's inclusion in the British sphere of influence in the late nineteenth century and the subsequent establishment of a British protectorate and colony there. The British brought together the country's diverse elements under a unified administration and bestowed on it the name Kenya after the 5,200-meter peak in the central highlands that the Kikuyu called kere nyaga, the "mountain of whiteness." Improvement in the lot of the average African was limited until after World War II when political movements, like that among the Kikuyu led by Jomo Kenyatta, demanded a role for the black majority in Kenya's government. The determination of the European community to retain exclusive control in a "White Man's Country" and the continued denial of African rights set off a violent reaction during the Mau Mau emergency in the 1950s. The Kikuyu-led insurrection was suppressed, and the lengthy imprisonment of Kenyatta and other African leaders suspected of complicity in it caused a hiatus in organized African political activity until 1960, when the campaign for majority rule within the framework of the colonial regime succeeded in submerging ethnic differences among Africans and in winning the recognition of British authorities.

Kenya
Capsule History
* Kenya was first populated by a number of small dispersed tribal groups, the main groups were the Kikuyu, Kamba, Luo and Masai. These tribes shared the same area of land although they all had different origins.
* It wasn't until the 19th century that outsiders entered the interior of the country and as a result Kenya escaped the worst of the Arab slavers who concentrated more further to the south.
* The coast however helped to form an important part of a chain of Omani Arab trading posts. These strings of trading posts dealt mainly in ivory and slaves and were under the control of the Sultan of Zanzibar.
* The overshadowing of the Sultan's powers started in the late 19th century when both British and German personnel obtained trading concessions along the coast.
* Britain was allotted what is now Uganda and Kenya; Germany was allotted what is now mainland Tanzania.
* In 1893 Uganda became a British protectorate closely followed by Kenya - 1895. The British were just interested in controlling the rich resources of Uganda and to facilitate this they built a railway between Mombasa and Kampala using labourers from India, many of whom remained and have become todays merchant class.
* At the turn of the century British attention was drawn away from Uganda and settled upon Kenya. White farmers went in and set up plantations producing export crops. During this process many Africans lost their land; they were then forced onto inferior land or onto the labour market as a result of hut taxes imposed by the colonial administration.

History of Kenya
Written records and archeological evidence are the two primary sources of historical information about Kenya. The written records focus on the coastal region primarily because of its rich history of trade with the southern Arab nations. The Kenyan interior, however, remained mostly undocumented prior to the 19th century. The arrival of the Europeans brought an end to the mystery of this diverse region of the world.
Archeology reveals the secrets of the development of civilization in the Kenyan heartland. The Rift Valley, which runs through the center of Kenya, has long been regarded as the cradle of civilization. Charles Darwin perpetuated this theory in his work On The Origin of Species . Darwin's theory that humans and the higher apes probably had a common ancestor led to the conclusion that humankind originated where the apes were found: East Africa. Early archeological discoveries at Lake Turkana in Kenya, at the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, and along the Kagera River in Uganda support Darwin's guesswork with hard evidence. Ancient hominoid, or human-like skulls dating back 21/2 million years were discovered at these sites. Although archeologists believe there were originally at least three different species of hominid roaming the plains of Kenya, evidence suggests only one species evolved and developed into Homo sapiens. The Rift Valley region, therefore, earns the distinction in most archeological circles as the area where man first stood upright and began his life-long quest for food and water.
