History
The first of many genuinely human footprints to be stamped on Kenyan soil were left way back in 2000 BC by nomadic Cushitic tribes from Ethiopia. A second group followed around 1000 BC and occupied much of central Kenya. The rest of the ancestors of the country's medley of tribes arrived from all over the continent between 500 BC and AD 500. The Bantu-speaking people (such as the Gusii, Kikuyu, Akamba and Meru) arrived from West Africa while the Nilotic speakers (Maasai, Luo, Samburu and Turkana) came from the Nile Valley in southern Sudan. As tribes migrated throughout the interior, Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula and Shirazis from Persia (now Iran) settled along the East African coast from the 8th century AD onwards. Drawn by the whiff of spices and money, the Portuguese started sniffing around in the 15th century. After venturing further and further down the western coast of Africa, Vasco da Gama finally rounded the Cape of Good Hope and headed up the continent's eastern coast in 1498. Seven years later, the Portuguese onslaught on the region began. By the 16th century, most of the indigenous Swahili trading towns, including Mombasa, had been either sacked or occupied by the Portuguese - marking the end of the Arab monopoly of the Indian Ocean trade. The Portuguese settled in for a long period of harsh colonial rule, playing one sultan off against another. But their grip on the coast was always tenuous because their outposts had to be supplied from Goa in India. Control of the coast was won back by the Arabs in 1720.

Kenya History
Kenya has been home to many migrant populations, beginning with the very earliest hunter-gatherers. Migrants from the Ethiopian highlands were the first, followed in the first few centuries AD by the ancestors of the Kalenjin, Kikuyu, Gisii, Akamba and Mijikenda peoples. Hundreds of years later, along the coast, the descendents of those early migrants mixed with Arab and Persian settlers. This mix gave rise to a distinct culture and language: Swahili. The Swahili set up Indian Ocean trade with the Arabs, Phoenicians, Indians and Chinese, and were the first people in Kenya to develop complex communities. The Portuguese reached the coast at the beginning of the 16th century and established a stronghold there until 1700, when Kenya became a British protectorate. The pastoralist Orma, Borana and Rendille peoples also began moving into northern Kenya from southern Ethiopia during the 16th century, as did the ancestors of the Luo people. Toward the end of the 17th century, the Turkana arrived. The Masai and Samburu peoples were the last of the African migrant communities to settle in Kenya.

Kenya history and time line
Kenya has an influential history. Kenya is known as the land behind Born Free, but few people realise how the colonial influences on Kenya have altered the economic base of this African nation.
In 1500, the Portuguese colonized Kenya, but by the 17th century Oman and the other Arab nations ousted this colonial power and took control. The Arabs had control of Kenya until 1885, when British signed an agreement with Oman releasing the east African colony into England's colonial commonwealth. Kenya finally gained complete independence in 1963. Kenya's population consists mostly of black Africans, with bodyOffer(22245) Arabs, Europeans and Asians holding the minorities. The black Africans are divided into 40 ethnic groups. These groups belong to four linguistic families - Bantu, Nilo-hamitic, Nilotic, and Hamitic. The four largest ethnic groups inn these families are: Bantu-speaking(Kikuyu), Bantu(Luhya), Bantu(Kamba), and Nilotic(Luo). Kenya is divided into seven administrative provinces: Coastal, Eastern, Central, Rift Valley, Nyanza, Northeastern, and Western. There is some controversy over whether Kenyas capitol, Niarobi, should be included in that count, or as a separate province.

Eventually, the British established a protectorate over the region, first at the coast in 1890 and later throughout the interior (1895). By 1920, Kenya held the status of colony, and was inhabited by a large and prosperous British community. Though the Italians briefly took control of northern Kenya during World War II (they came from Italian Ethiopia) Britain quickly regained control and even permitted some limited participation in local government to the native Africans in Kenya. In the 1950s, the violent Mau Mau rebellion emerged to fight against British colonial rule. In 1963, independence was achieved and Kenya joined the British commonwealth shortly thereafter. Jomo Kenyatta became Kenya's first president, and served until his death in 1978 when he was succeeded by Daniel arap Moi. Though Moi's government has been accused of human rights abuses, he has been reelected five times since then. Though Kenya was, for a long time, viewed as an African success story, the last decade has brought with it difficult economic and political challenges, along with violence and corruption. The presence of refugees from Somalia, Sudan, and Ethiopia has also placed a heavy burden on the government.

    Early History to Independence
During the 1950s and 60s, the anthropologist L. S. B. Leakey discovered in N Tanzania the remains of hominids who lived c.2 million years ago. These persons, perhaps the earliest humans on earth, most likely also inhabited S Kenya. In the Kenya highlands, the existence of farming and domestic herds can be dated to c.1000 B.C. Trade between the Kenya coast and Arabia was brisk by A.D. 100. Arabs settled on the coast during medieval times, and they soon established several autonomous city-states (including Mombasa, Malindi, and Pate). Farmers and herders traveled S from Ethiopia and settled in Kenya in c.2000 B.C. There is also evidence that Bantu-speaking people and Nilotic speakers from the S Sudan settled in Kenya between 500 B.C.

Kenya History and Culture
History Kenya's present population of more than 27 million is the result of incursions and migrations of differing groups over the past 1,500 years. For visitors, this striking cultural mix is one of the pleasures of visiting the country. For Kenyans, it has, in the past, presented some problems as various groups vied for power and territory. Culture There are more than 70 tribal groups among the Africans in Kenya. Distinctions between many of them are blurred - western cultural values are becoming more ingrained and traditional values are disintegrating. Yet, even though the average African may have outwardly drifted away from tribal traditions, tribe is still the most important part of a person's identity.

IFPRI Home Research Research Divisions Environment and Production Technology Division ... Discussion Papers Discussion Paper No. 115 Abstract Improved Fallows in Kenya: History, Farmer Practice, and Impacts Frank Place, Steve Franzel, Qureish Noordin, and Bashir Jama February 2004
Abstract Empirical results suggest that improved fallows almost always double on-farm maize yields. In addition, the data indicates that poor households use improved fallows at much greater rate (about 30 percent) than they do fertilizer (8 percent), though, on average, the size of fallow plots remains small, at 440m2. As a result, despite these promising signs, the improved fallow systems were not found to be linked to improved household level food security or poverty indicators primarily, primarily because the size of the fields under the agroforestry systems was on average, quite small. Conclusion To conclude, improved fallows represent a technically effective and financially profitable technology that is attractive to poor households with little cash available for investment. They are being used and adopted by a significant proportion of households in areas of western Kenya where they had been disseminated in the late 1990s. On the other hand, farm sizes are small and the ability of farmers to set aside land, even for a season is limited. Hence, the average size improved fallow is small among adopting farmers. Looking to the future, it is best to view improved fallows as a component of a broader integrated soil fertility management strategy for farmers. Farmers will also use manure, compost, and to some degree, fertilizer. Improved fallows have a comparative advantage in that they are relatively labor saving over manure or compost, they have a low risk of failure in supplying nutrients on the farm (because of extensive rooting systems), and they offer some by-products. Our evidence suggests that they may serve as an entry point for improved soil fertility management for farmers who had previously not invested in soil fertility management.

[edit this] This is no World66 image. It was found using an Internet search. more.. [Change image] [Upload image] Fossils found in East Africa suggest that protohumans roamed the area more than 20 million years ago. Recent finds near Kenya's Lake Turkana indicate that hominids lived in the area 2.6 million years ago. Cushitic-speaking people from northern Africa moved into the area that is now Kenya beginning around 2000 BC. Arab traders began frequenting the Kenya coast around the first century A.D. Kenya's proximity to the Arabian Peninsula invited colonization and Arab and Persian settlements sprouted along the coast by the eighth century. During the first millennium A.D. Nilotic and Bantu peoples moved into the region and the latter now comprises three-quarters of Kenya's population. The Swahili language a mixture of Bantu and Arabic developed as a lingua franca for trade between the different peoples. Arab dominance on the coast was eclipsed by the arrival in 1498 of the Portuguese who gave way in turn to Islamic control under the Imam of Oman in the 1600s. The United Kingdom established its influence in the 19th century. The colonial history of Kenya dates from the Berlin Conference of 1885 when the European powers first partitioned East Africa into spheres of influence. In 1895 the U.K. Government established the East African Protectorate and soon after opened the fertile highlands to white settlers. The settlers were allowed a voice in government even before it was officially made a U.K. colony in 1920 but Africans were prohibited from direct political participation until 1944.
