Established in 1980, the ISK Intercultural Program gives every student from Kindergarten through grade twelve the opportunity to know an important part of the great African continent. The educational objectives of the Intercultural Program expeditions include:
  • developing an increased understanding of the cultures and people of Kenya;
  • gaining familiarity with Kenya's geography and ecosystems;
  • meeting physical challenges.
The program provides an Intercultural experience for all students K-12. It is an opportunity for all to experience the rich variety of culture, geography, history, and wildlife relationships with the people of Kenya, through personal interaction with the indigenous environment. The program is designed in collaboration with classroom teachers to make it relevant to the topics being covered within the curriculum. Overnight trips begin in Grade 3, with one night camping at Lake Naivasha, in the shadow of a dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. This coincides with the Grade 3 unit on rocks, so the students focus on the geological features of the area and examine local igneous and sedimentary rocks. Other examples: Grade 5
The students:
  • study the Mau Mau freedom fighters' history;

Political System Maps
Geography Kenya straddles the equator and covers an area of 583,000 sq. km (225,000 sq. miles), which includes around 13,600 sq. km (5,251 sq. miles) of inland water in the form of lakes. It is bordered to the north by Ethiopia and Sudan, to the east by Somalia and the Indian Ocean coastline, which stretches for 608 km (380 miles), to the west by Uganda and Lake Victoria (62,937 sq.km) of which 3,755 sq. km is in Kenya and to the south by Tanzania. The country can be divided into four main zones: the coastal belt, the Rift Valley, and central highlands, western Kenya, and northern and eastern Kenya. Kenya is made up of seven provinces (Coast, Central, Rift Valley, Nyanza, Western, North Eastern and Eastern). Nairobi, the capital is also treated as a province. Kenya's population centres are concentrated in the southern portion of the country and along the coast. Nairobi is the capital city. Other major towns include Mombasa, Kenya's main port on the Indian Ocean, Kisumu, Eldoret, Thika and Nakuru.

http://www.jambokenya.com/jambo/kenya/geogrph1.htm
Kenya lies on the equator and is bordered on the north by Sudan, Somalia and Ethopia; Uganda and Lake Victoria lie to the west; Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro are to the south while the Indian Ocean lies to the east. Kenya has twenty mountains, six of which rise to over 3,000 meters (9,900 feet). The Tana River, largest in the country, supports river traffic in its lower regions. Most of Kenya's rivers and small lakes dry up during the dry season making perennial water shortages an ongoing problem. Before the formation of the Rift Valley, Kenya's climate and vegetation could best be characterized as tropical. The great geological changes that created the Rift triggered extreme climatic changes as well. After millions of years of evolution, Kenya's climates now range from semi-arid to tropical, temperate to alpine, and also include artic. The country has three main geographic regions, each characterized by its own unique climate and vegetation.

    Kenya - History
    T he history of Kenya is very long and complex. From the "Cradle of Civilization" to present date, Kenya’s long history has been both varied and fascinating. Kenya's history dates back to many centuries from the internal Diaspora or the early settlements and migrations. Then came the formation of the various language groups who developed their own religions, traditions, governments and ruling systems in which they dictated their way of life and how they managed to keep alive by their trade and occupations. Then came the white settlers, which were followed by the fight for liberation, which gave birth to the Mau Mau freedom fighters and the rise of the Kenyan heroes. Kenya - Geography and Climate Kenya lies across the equator on the east of the African continent. Neighboring countries are Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to east Tanzania to south, Uganda to west and Sudan to northwest. Kenya covers an area of 582,646 square kilometers. The land stretches from the sea level (Indian Ocean) in the east, to 5,199 meters at the peak of the snow-capped Mount Kenya.

    A new page based on the new template is being worked on at Kenya/Temp, please make any changes you want to make on that page. Ethnic divisions account for many of Kenya's problems. During the early 1990s, tribal clashes killed thousands and left tens of thousands homeless. Ethnically split opposition groups allowed the regime of Daniel arap Moi , in power from 1978 until 2002, to be reelected for four terms, with the election in 1997 being marred by violence and fraud. Kenya is well placed to serve as an engine of growth in East Africa, but its economy is stagnating because of poor management and uneven commitment to reform. In , the government of Kenya implemented a program of economic liberalization and reform that included the removal of import licensing, price controls, and foreign exchange controls. With the support of the World Bank IMF , and other donors, the reforms led to a brief turnaround in economic performance following a period of negative growth in the early 1990s. Kenya's real GDP grew 5% in 1995 and 4% in 1996, and inflation remained under control. Growth slowed in 1997-99 however. Political violence damaged the tourist industry, and Kenya's Enhanced Structural Adjustment Program lapsed due to the government's failure to maintain reform or address public sector corruption. A new economic team was put in place in 1999 to revitalize the reform effort, strengthen the civil service, and curb corruption, but wary donors continue to question the government's commitment to sound economic policy. Long-term barriers to development include electricity shortages, the government's continued and inefficient dominance of key sectors, endemic corruption, and the country's high population growth rate.
