    Kenya - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Kenya is situated in the center of eastern Africa, along the Indian Ocean. It is crossed by the equator and shares its borders with Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania. The country has a fine tropical coastline and, in the north and east, a highland area which has some of the best soils in Africa for agriculture. But nearly two-thirds of the country, in the north and east, is covered by dry bushes and semi-desert.
Mount Kenya is a volcano that gave the country its modern name. It is situated in the central part of Kenya, to the south of the equator. It is the second highest mountain in Africa after Kilimanjaro, which is located some 200 miles (320 km) to the south. The Mount Kenya area was added to UNESCO's (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage List in 1997. It means that cultural and natural treasures of the Mount Kenya area are preserved and protected by the international community.
Scientists call Kenya the "cradle of humanity," because the earliest human remains were found there. Kenya is also the heart of the African safari, where the most diverse collection of wild animals on the continent live. In fact, the word "safari" came from Swahiliofficial language of Kenyaand means "journey."

Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook Kenya Introduction Kenya Background: Founding president and liberation struggle icon Jomo KENYATTA led Kenya from independence until his death in 1978, when President Daniel Toroitich arap MOI took power in a constitutional succession. The country was a de facto one-party state from 1969 until 1982 when the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU) made itself the sole legal party in Kenya. MOI acceded to internal and external pressure for political liberalization in late 1991. The ethnically fractured opposition failed to dislodge KANU from power in elections in 1992 and 1997, which were marred by violence and fraud, but are viewed as having generally reflected the will of the Kenyan people. President MOI stepped down in December of 2002 following fair and peaceful elections. Mwai KIBAKI, running as the candidate of the multiethnic, united opposition group, the National Rainbow Coalition, defeated KANU candidate Uhuru KENYATTA and assumed the presidency following a campaign centered on an anticorruption platform.
