I was on my way home from school this evening when I saw several Kenyan's driving cattle across the road. They were wearing a red tunic and carried a heavy wooden staff. They are of the Maasai tribe. They own cattle, sheep and goats. They live in settlements called a Kraal; these are villages of round huts. Maasai woman paint their homes. You may find it a strange fact but the Maasai women build the houses.
These people live all over Kenya and in the North of Tanganyika. In Kenya the tribe is split into about 17 groups and each live in their own territory.
They are called ˜Lords of East Africa. They speak the Maa language and this is spoken differently (dialect) between the groups. Their language has lots of proverbs. This one made me smile. First I will write it in Maa then I into English. Meikitikitoya oloota esumash. This means, You cannot tickle a hungry person because they will not laugh.
They keep cattle, sheep and goats. The Maasai are thought of as the people of cattle. It is what their life is all about. The more cattle a Maasai family has the wealthier they are.

Flag of Kenya Background:
Revered president and liberation struggle icon Jomo KENYATTA led Kenya from independence until his death in 1978, when 2nd President Daniel Toroitich arap MOI took power in a constitutional succession.
The country was a de facto one-party state from 1969 until 1982 when the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU) made itself the sole legal party in Kenya. MOI acceded to internal and external pressure for political liberalization in late 1991. The ethnically fractured opposition failed to dislodge KANU from power in elections in 1992 and 1997, which were marred by violence and fraud, but are viewed as having generally reflected the will of the Kenyan people. President MOI stepped down in December of 2002 following fair and peaceful elections. Mwai KIBAKI, running as the candidate of the multiethnic, united opposition group, the National Rainbow Coalition, defeated KANU candidate Uhuru KENYATTA and assumed the presidency following a campaign centered on an anticorruption platform.

TraveLearn Cybertravel News Kenya - Volume Kenya Trivia
One way to think of Kenya is “Africa in miniature”. Kenya is home to the greatest concentration of free-ranging wildlife on earth as well as an outstanding diversity of people with almost every main African tongue spoken and forty-two distinct ethnic groups or tribes each with it’s own language. Most Kenyans also speak Kiswahili or Swahili as we call it. English is spoken almost everywhere, thus most Kenyans are tri-lingual including their tribal tongue. Western cultural values are becoming more ingrained in the Kenyan society and it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between the more then 70 tribal groups. Yet, it is not unusual for the first question when two people meet to be “What tribe are you from?” Mount Kilimanjaro's glaciers are melting at a rate of approximately 2% per year. Scientists estimate that, at this rate, the "Snows of Kilimanjaro" made famous by Ernest Hemingway, will be gone by 2020. Kenya Book and Video Selections

    Exploring Kenya
Africa Homepage Geographia Homepage K enya is still the primary focus of all adventure travel in Africa. It is one of the finestand undoubtedly the most famoussafari destination in the world. Safari , however, is by no means the only reason to visit Kenya, for the attractions of its rich culture and diverse environments are considerable. Kenya is situated right along the equator, on the eastern coast of the African continent. Its coastal region is on the southeast, and to the east lies Somalia. Ethiopia is to the north, the Sudan to the northwest, and Uganda directly to the west. The southwestern border of the country is marked by Lake Victoria, and southward lies Tanzania. Kenya's geography is marvelously varied. While much of northeastern Kenya is a flat, bush-covered plain, the remainder of the country encompasses pristine beaches, scenic highlands and lake regions, the Great Rift Valley, and the magnificent Mount Kenya. Although Kenya's varied environments experience a wide variety of climate conditions, the temperature remains comfortably warm year-round. Much of Kenya experiences heavy rainfall from March through May and, to a lesser extent, from October through December. The best time for most outdoor acitivities (including safari and mountain climbing) is during the dry season (June-September).

The Lake Victoria basin is a plateau located in the southwestern end of the country, in the administrative region corresponding to the Nyanza (lake in Swahili) and Western provinces. The plateau extends northward to the Cherangani Hills at the north east, in the western edge of the Rift Valley, and to Mount Elgon (4,321 m), in Ugandan territory. Southward, the plateau is bordered at east by the Mau Escarpment and reaches the shores of Lake Victoria, 1,200 m above sea level.
    Rift Valley and Highlands
The Rift Valley, the great African fault, is a huge scar that crosses from north to south through the eastern half of Africa and the Middle East. Along its enormous depression, the earth is patched with extinct or inactive volcanoes alternating with tectonic lakes.

    Kenya - Geography
Kenya covers an area of 582,646 square kilometres. The land stretches from the sea level (Indian Ocean) in the east, to 5,199 meters at the peak of the snow-capped Mount Kenya. From the coast, the altitude changes gradually through the coastal belt and plains (below 152 metres above sea level), the dry intermediate low belt to what is known as the Kenya Highlands (over 900 metres above sea level). The monotony of terrain in the low belt is broken by residual hills, masses of broken boulders and inselbergs. Settlement is confined to places where water can be found. Wildlife are masters of the greater part of the low belt. The famous Amboseli Game Reserve and Tsavo National Parks are situated here. The Great Rift Valley bisects the Kenya Highlands into east and west. Mount Kenya is on the eastern side. The Highlands are cool and agriculturally rich. Both large and small holder farming is carried out in the highlands. Major cash crops are tea, coffee, pyrethrum, wheat and corn. Livestock farming is also practised. The Lake Victoria Basin is dominated by Kano plains which are suited for farming through irrigation. The northern part of Kenya is plain and arid. Pastoralism is the main land use activity. However, a variety of food crops do well through irrigation.
