Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live and act in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors. A nation of rich cultural diversity and renowned natural attractions, Kenya is one of Africa’s leading nations in terms of economic and social development. Home to over 40 ethnic groups, each of which retains a strong sense of cultural identity, this powerful East African nation has worked hard to reconcile diverse perspectives on development and health care as it determines how best to allocate limited resources. Despite advances in training, infrastructure, and technical development — aided in part by Western funding, a vibrant private sector, and successful coalition building — access to health care remains an issue for Kenya’s predominantly rural population. Cosmopolitan, multiethnic Nairobi is Kenya’s cultural crossroads, as well as the regional base for many international development organizations and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). This lively city offers unparalleled opportunities to examine the challenges facing one of Africa’s most diverse and spectacular nations as it strives to preserve its cultural heritage while improving health and welfare.
