The Global Routes Teaching Internship Program in Kenya has been designed in coordination with community members, teachers and school administrators. Interns live with a family in a rural village, help teach in the village secondary school, offer extracurricular activities and initiate and participate in community service projects. It is not necessary to have a background in teaching or a particular subject area. The first portion of the program is dedicated to preparing interns for their teaching placements. Register Now!
Orientation and Teacher Training (the first 10 days)
The Teaching Placement (2 months)
During this primary program component, two interns are placed together in a rural village. Co-interns can collaborate on lesson planning and team-teaching endeavors. The Global Routes in-country director meets with interns on a regular basis to provide support. Their teaching responsibilities begin immediately. Depending upon their skills and interests and the school's needs, the interns may teach Math, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Social Ethics. Because schools are expected to cover 13 subjects in preparing their students for the national exams, the few teachers these schools do have are overworked. Fellow teachers are happy to have interns to help relieve them of their burden.

Current Issue: Apr. 12 2002 09:34PM, Wednesday, June 9, 2004 Professors discuss AIDS in Kenya by Lily Brislen (Staff Writer) On Monday, Professors Humphrey Webuyi and Priscilla Kariuke of the University of Nairobi, Kenya, addressed an audience in the Richardson Auditorium with a lecture titled "Urbanization, Cultural Change and the AIDS Epidemic: Perspectives from Kenya." The lecture was an eye-opener for many college students about the reality of AIDS in the developing world. Professor Webuyi gave his lecture on the AIDS situation and the cultural factors that have lead to the spread of the disease. He began his lecture with statistics and a history lesson that put the situation into shocking perspective. The first infection in Kenya occurred in 1984, but despite its rapid spread, AIDS wasn't classified a national disaster until 1999. The government did not want anyone to talk about the epidemic, because they were afraid it would affect tourism, a large source of income, and stigmatize many families. 25.3 million people in Sub Saharan Africa are infected with AIDS, 2.1 million of those in Kenya. 1 million children have been orphaned due to AIDS. Kenya has an infection rate of 700 a day, mostly in the 18-45 age range. Because of this, the life expectancy has dropped from 63 to 48. The chance that a 15-year-old boy will reach his 50th birthday is slim.

The program is intended to meet the needs of students from all universities and at different stages in their studies. There are no prerequisites although students with no background in the study of Africa will be provided with a suggested reading list before embarking on the program. This program, while certainly well suited for students headed for or majoring in humanities or social sciences, should also accommodate those students whose major requirements do not allow them to be absent from campus for a full semester or academic year (particularly students from pre-professional and natural science disciplines).

Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors. Coastal East Africa is home to the Swahili — an ancient trading civilization dating from the first century. The Swahili developed an extensive commercial network of seafaring communities along Africa’s Indian Ocean, linking Asia and the Middle East with the African continent. Modern Kenyan coastal cultures, while influenced by more recent migrations and interactions, continue to draw heavily upon these roots. Mombasa, the heart of Kenya’s commercial and cultural connections to other Indian Ocean ports, is an ideal base from which to explore Kenya’s coastal cultures.
