culture history lake nakuru ... tsavo Travel to Kenya with Albatros Travel There are more than 70 tribal groups among the Africans in Kenya. Distinctions between many of them are blurred - western cultural values are becoming more ingrained and traditional values are disintegrating. Yet, even though the average African may have outwardly drifted away from tribal traditions, tribe is still the most important part of a person's identity. English and Swahili are the languages taught throughout the country, but there are many other tribal languages. These include Kikuyu, Luhia, Luo and Kikamba as well as a plethora of minor tribal tongues. It's extremely useful for the traveller to have a working knowledge of Swahili, especially outside the urban areas and in remote parts of the country. Another language you'll come across is Sheng, spoken almost exclusively by the younger members of society. A fairly recent development, Sheng is a mixture of Swahili and English along with a fair sprinkling of other languages. Most Kenyans outside the coastal and eastern provinces are Christians of one sort or another, while most of those on the coast and in the eastern part of the country are Muslim. Muslims make up some 30% of the population. In the more remote tribal areas you'll find a mixture of Muslims, Christians and those who follow their ancestral tribal beliefs.

T he Swahili are urbanised African muslims, who have integrated many Asian cultural and architectural features into their own traditions. Written records of the trade links between Africa and Asia date back to the 1st century AD. But the trade reached its peak in the 15th century, referred to as the "golden age" of Swahili civilisation. Mogadishu, Pate, Lamu, Mombasa and Zanzibar are thriving towns still today. Indian, Arabic and African building traditions blend together to form a unique and cosmopolitan architectural heritage.

Background
Numbering about six and a half million - about 20% of the national population - the Bantu-speaking Kikuyu of central Kenya are the country's single largest tribe, as well as one of the most 'westernized'.
Yet they are also something of a paradox, for in spite of the wholesale changes that Kikuyu society has undergone since the British arrived over a century ago, their sense of cultural identity has remained strong, and the Kikuyu have also been the most successful at adapting to Kenya's new economic, social and political realities. The Kikuyu are known throughout Kenya for working hard, and for managing money well: they are easily Kenya's wealthiest people, and own the majority of the nation's businesses. As a result, they are regarded by many outsiders - not least the Kalenjin - with a mixture of jealousy and distrust.
Along with the Maasai, the Kikuyu suffered greatly at the hands of the British, losing much of their land and many of their traditions. In the form of the Mau Mau, the Kikuyu were instrumental in the armed struggle for freedom from the British, and bore the brunt of their reprisals. Yet the struggle did lead to independence, and Kenya's first post-colonial head of state, Jomo Kenyatta, was a Kikuyu.

Farming, Sanitation, and Nutrition in Kenya
This interview is with an American health student who worked in Kenya with women farmers. She worked for a summer with women in the rural suburbs of Kenya, who are more Westernized than women in more remote rural areas. She worked with two non-governmental organizations (NGO's): Life Water International and Farming Systems Kenya. She also worked at a local hospital with a clinical nutritionist. In Kenya, women are the farmers, as well as the mothers, caretakers, and salespeople: Women in Kenya wear a lot of hats. In fact, they wear pretty much all the hats that can be worn. They are the mothers, the sole people that are going to be taking care of their children. They are the farmers, they are the ones that are in the marketplace. Often they are the ones that are handling much of the financial situations even, although they don't necessarily have control over it, they are asked to handle it. Pretty much any area of life, the needs of the family or an individual, a woman would have to handle or balance.
    Health Problems: Sanitation and Nutrition
As farmers and caregivers, women in Kenya have control over nutrition, through water gathering, cooking, and crop choice.

Kenya's population agglomerates tribes, cultures, religions and languages. According to what we know today, the country's human map was started 6,000 years ago, when the native inhabitants of this land were first invaded by the northern Nilotic and Cushite peoples. Then came the Bantus, followed by the Arabs, Asians, Europeans... The skin colours of the Kenyans cover all the range of clears and darks. The nearly 30 million Kenyans are distributed in a very uneven way throughout the country, given that the north and northeast regions are arid and little hospitable for human settling. In this regions, population density hardly reaches 2 inhabitants per sq km, whereas in the rich and fertile western the rate rises to 120 inhabitants per sq km. In the Rift Valley, denisty varies among areas, with an average around 13 inhabitants per sq km.
