www.artmatters.info 'Decency' loses to fashion fads in East Africa Theatre personalities Lornah Irungu and Wangechi Murage as 'maids of honour' on the set of Dangerous Affair film Although clothes are primarily meant to cover one's nakedness and shelter one against the elements, Ogova Ondego contends, it is becoming fashionable to expose more and more flesh by wearing less and less clothing in urban East Africa.
Novelty and conformity are the two major forces driving fashion trends. Whether we admit it or not, decisions concerning what we wear are guided by our desire to look good in something new and also to look like others in our social group. Unfortunately these forces are not always in our best interest.
"Dressing up decently doesn't mean not being trendy. There are several clothes that are made in the latest styles but don't necessarily have to show everything," Emmanuel Bagwana writes in Sunday Lifestyle (a pullout weekly magazine in Uganda's Monitor newspaper). Flowers in African cultures
Although Africa is rich in plants, African cultures do not appear to be particularly fascinated by flowers as they are virtually absent in art, songs, proverbs, and poetry. The floral gap co-exists with the sacred depth in the African imagination, contends Ali A Mazrui.

Kenyan Culture
If any one thing of Kenya speaks of this unique character, it is the modern melding of traditional societies and culture.
In Kenya it is possible to leave Nairobi, a city with a thriving business heart powered by the latest information technology, and drive in just a few hours to a place where life is lived in accordance to tradition and custom, where warriors armed with spears drive cattle into thorn brush enclosures to protect them from lions at night.
In Kenya the modern and the traditional live side by side, and at times the lines blur. For many visitors to Kenya, this is evident within minutes of arrival. Among the busy urban traffic, the median strips of fresh grass along the airport road are a popular place for Maasai herdsmen to graze their cattle.
Some people lament the gradual change in lifestyles, and loss of many customs and traditions in deference to modern life and values.
But much more than any other country on earth Kenya has maintained many of its traditional cultures. Indeed, in Kenya tradition and custom is not seen as being linked to the past, but as being an amorphous and evolving part of everyday life.

History and Culture of Kenya
The first of many footprints
The remainder of the 18th century saw the Omani dynasties from the Persian Gulf dug in along the East African coast. The depredations of the Portuguese era and constant quarrels among the Arab governors caused a decline in trade and prosperity which meant that economic powerhouses such as Britain and Germany weren't interested in grabbing a slice of East Africa until about the mid-19th century.
With Europeans
It was downhill from here for the Maasai. As white settlers demanded more fertile land, the Maasai were herded into smaller reserves. The Kikuyu, a Bantu agricultural tribe from the highlands west of Mt Kenya, also had vast tracts of land ripped from under their feet.

The above example speaks to the complexity and the reality of changethat culture undergoes in every society, even in kenya. The
http://www.glpinc.org/Classroom Activities/Kenya Articles/What is Kenyan Culture
The Problem of Defining Culture For many people today, differences are explained using the language of "culture" as the explanation. However, if pressed, most would probably be unable to point to what variables they are referring to when using the term. Culture is a complex and ever changing reality. For instance, Kenya has never been a place simply of wild, exotic beasts with people defined only by their exotic dress. It has a long a varied history that continues to evolve and respond to the changes in the wider world. Yet there is the fact that many of the people living throughout Kenya seem to have differences that they themselves refer to. So how do we figure out what they really mean? So what is culture? Anthropologists have shown (and we can intuitively guess this), that just because two persons share similarities in geographical location and employment, this does not mean that culturally they see themselves as the same. For instance, above we see an Njemps man (left) and a Tugen man (right). Both live in the region of Lake Baringo in Kenya, yet although their villages share the same land and they trade and socialize with one another, they see themselves as also having differences, not the least in the way the dress/adorn themselves.

Your Itinerary
Day 1:
ARRIVE NAIROBI, KENYA Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your beautiful historic hotel for a welcome rest. Welcome to Africa!! The Norfolk Hotel
Day 2:
TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK After breakfast, you are met by a transfer driver and driven to Wilson regional airport for your flight by light aircraft to Tsavo and Kilalinda, a journey of about 1 hour. On arrival, you will be driven about 10 minutes to the camp. The lodge is situated on the banks of the Athi River, at the edge of Tsavo East National Park. It looks out onto the Yatta Plateau and on a clear day Mt. Kilimanjaro can be seen to the South. The lodge is surrounded by a beautiful and well-tendered garden that contrasts with the arid countryside, so typical of Tsavo. As one would expect, great pride is taken in providing first class cuisine. Most of the fresh vegetables are grown on a farm nearby and therefore are obtained daily. All bread, cakes and pastas are homemade. Menus can vary from the traditional to the exotic and can accommodate most diet preferences. Kilalinda Lodge
