    • The anthem page has been updated with a picture of President Mwai Kibaki (after receiving many emails about it). We may start selling some carvings, baskets, and other miscellaneous Kenyan stuff that my family brought back over the years. If we do this, we will set up a page with pictures and descriptions. The Kenya quizzes are still some of the most popular pages on the site.
Future of the site This site was one of the first Kenya sites on the web. As far as we know, only RC Bowen's page was up before ours, although a couple of others came online around the same time as ours. We built the majority of this site in 1996 and 1997, when we had much more time than we have now. We get a lot of email about Kenya and about linking to this site. We try to respond to as many as possible, but simply don't have time any more to do so. Also, we get a lot of questions about where to stay in Kenya, what it is like there, whether it is safe, etc. We haven't been to Kenya since 1989 and don't feel like we can honestly answer these questions anymore. We keep in touch with people there, but are no longer qualified to give advice or recommendations. Due to lack of time, there will probably be no more updates nor will we be responding to email (unless it's from a friend who found us through the site or it's just so interesting that we can't help but respond). What is here will remain here and occasional updates may occur (but no promises). There are a lot of great Kenya sites now that can provide current information or answer questions. Thanks for all the emails supporting the site and we are glad that so many people have enjoyed it.

    Kikuyu (otherwise spelled Gikuyu)

The Kikuyu rely heavily on agriculture. They grow bananas, sugarcane, arum lily, yams, beans, millet, maize, black beans and a variety of other vegetables. They also raise cattle, sheep, and goats. They use the hides from the cattle to make bedding, sandals, and carrying straps and they raise the goats and sheep to use for religious sacrifices and purification. In the Kikuyu culture boys and girls are raised very differently. The girls are raised to work in the farm and the boys usually work with the animals. The girls also have the responsibility of taking care of a baby brother or sister and also helping the mother out with household chores.
Though they are traditionally agricultural people and have a reputation as hard-working people, a lot of them are now involved in business. Most of the Kikuyu still live on small family plots but many of them have also seen the opportunities in business and have moved to cities and different areas to work. They have a desire for knowledge and it is believed that all children should receive a full education. They have a terrific reputation for money management and it is common for them to have many enterprises at one time. The Kikuyu have also been active politically.

Since the arrival of the Europeans in Kenya in the mid-nineteenth century, the traditional cultures of Kenya's tribes have been undergoing a period of massive - and often devastating - change. This website is a multimedia encyclopaedia dedicated to Kenya's people: twelve of a planned forty Kenyan tribes are currently covered in detail, each with extensive sections covering their history (both written and oral), society and customs, way of life, religion and cosmological beliefs, fables and legends, riddles and proverbs, and - of course - music and dance. The 500 pages of text (a fraction of the two thousand projected for mid-2004) are accompanied by over 230 photographs and six hours of music. Welcome to Kenya!
