THE HOSPITAL THE COMMUNITY
Jackson is a small, friendly community. The hospital sometimes uses the tag line of "Kentucky River Medical Center ... where your neighbor may be your nurse." Community spirit prevails in Jackson, where most people are involved in their churches, civic organizations and schools. Though Jackson was once a booming coal town, coal now plays a secondary role in our local economy. City and county leaders throughout the region have been successful in bringing new industry to the area, such as Trust Joist McMillian, one of the world's largest processed-wood manufacturing plants. The plant is located 20 miles outside of Jackson and provides over 150 jobs to residents in Breathitt and neighboring counties. Jackson is also home to one of Kentucky's two National Weather Service Offices. The state's five-year plan includes approval to increase Kentucky Highway 15, to four lanes. The highway stretches 90 miles from Campton, through Jackson, all the way to the Virginia border. RECREATION Situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Jackson is an outdoor-lovers paradise, where camping, hiking, fishing and hunting opportunities abound. Kentucky is very well-known for its beautiful State Parks. Natural Bridge State Park is about 40 minutes north and Buckhorn Lake State Park is about 40 minutes south. The Breathitt County Honey Festival is held annually during Labor Day Weekend. Crafts and entertainment by local residents have drawn record crowds over the years and attracted guests from many areas of the country. Eighty miles northwest of Jackson is Lexington, home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Basketball is king in Kentucky, from the UK Wildcats all the way to the local high school level. Lexington also has seasonal Thoroughbred racing at Keeneland, several large malls, nice restaurants, major hotels and an airport.

School-to-Work Transition and Education Reform Under the Kentucky Education Reform Act: Louisville, KY
The purpose of the Forum's site visit to Louisville, Kentucky was to provide participants from Congressional offices, federal departments and agencies, and national organizations with a first-hand view of state, city and neighborhood initiatives to improve the education and life options of young people. [Unfortunately, due to the federal shutdown, our federal participants were unable to join us.] A Spirit of Collaboration A common question asked by the field trip participants was how dependent the success in Louisville is on the individuals involved and the fact that everyone seems to know each other. Institutionalization, to a point , is one of the local goals to help avoid losing momentum if people are lost. Dr. Stephen Daeschener, Superintendent of the Jefferson County Public Schools , said, however, that being a newcomer did not prevent him from participating in the collaboration that preceded him. Technical education partnership benefits Kentucky students FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 11, 2002) - Gov. Paul Patton announced today a technical education partnership that creates a more seamless path to postsecondary education and training for Kentucky high school students, allowing them to get a head start on their college education.
The partnership between the Cabinet for Workforce Development's Department for Technical Education and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) allows technical education students to simultaneously enroll in high school and community and technical colleges. It also simplifies course transfers from high school technical programs to KCTCS.
This partnership includes all of the systems' major program areas - information technology, business technology, health careers, construction technology, automotive technology and manufacturing technology.
"Kentucky Tech students now have the opportunity to earn KCTCS credit while in high school, transfer that to any of the 28 community and technical colleges and not miss a beat in their education," said the governor. "This also provides them with a solid foundation of skills they need to be successful in today's and tomorrow's economy."
More than 65 percent of Kentucky's job growth in the next five years will be in jobs requiring some or extensive postsecondary education and training, according to the Kentucky Department for Employment Services. The governor noted that technical education leads to good-paying careers in both the traditional and new economies.

EARLY ADOLESCENTS AND THE WORLD OF WORK
A crucial factor in the formation of vocational identity is self-esteem. McDonald and Jessell (1992) found that those seventh and eighth graders who believed a variety of careers were possible for themselves had high self-esteem, could assess complex career information, and were primarily female, of middle to high socioeconomic status, and from two-parent families. Although boys thought most jobs were appropriate for either sex, 75% were unwilling to make nontraditional choices for themselves (ibid.). Although females appear more open to nontraditional careers at this age, middle school girls begin to feel the effects of gender bias on their aspirations (Silverman and Pritchard 1994). These findings suggest that middle school students need to learn to think about the future; recognize their responsibility for educational planning; broaden their aspirations beyond the stereotypes of gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic level; develop and maintain self-esteem; develop cognitive complexity (essential for the knowledge work of the future); have parental support for career choices; understand how school relates to future life roles; and recognize the broad scope of work in the 21st century.

Tobacco-settlement cash could buy computers, Web access under plan By Bill Wolfe
    bwolfe@courier-journal.com

The Courier-Journal An ambitious proposal to bring computers, high-speed Internet access and online learning to as many as 45,000 Kentucky farm families could take its first step toward reality tomorrow in a vote by Kentucky's Agriculture Development Board. The board will decide on a request for $50,000 to study the proposed Rural eLearning Agriculture Program, which would network tobacco growers with colleges and vocational schools, potential customers, agribusiness and others in a statewide public/private collaboration. Ultimately the project could enable tobacco growers to learn about new farming or business options that could take the place of tobacco, said REAP proponent Sam Lawson. Lawson is a member of the 15-member agriculture board, which controls millions of dollars in tobacco-settlement money intended to help wean Kentucky farmers off growing tobacco. Lawson, president of Hartland Equipment Corp., a John Deere dealership in Glasgow, said he was struck by the potential for Internet-based classes while sampling computer-learning programs at Western Kentucky University.
