Hats off to Kentucky schools
'On Target for Life' teaches archery history, safety, technique, concentration, self-improvement, with actual archery instruction
By James A. Swan, Ph.D.
Author "In Defense of Hunting" On May 9, 2001, at Oldsmar Elementary School near Tampa, Fla., a fifth-grade student was handcuffed, taken into police custody and suspended from school for drawing pictures of weapons. It was the same punishment if he had brought a real gun to school. March 24, 2001, a third grader in West Monroe, La., was suspended for three days for drawing a picture of a soldier holding a knife in a fort with rifles and handguns. These disciplinary actions are the result of a "zero-tolerance" policy many schools have installed as a way to curb school shootings. When a kid brings a weapon to school to commit a crime, this is a criminal act, and they should be punished. More than 3,000 students went through this spring's two-week curriculum, and, according to the teachers, the students were enthusiastic about learning archery and better behaved on days when archery was taught.

Archery in the Schools
Teaching kids about arms and safety may be more
effective to reduce violence than 'zero tolerance'
By James A. Swan, Ph.D. Author "In Defense of Hunting" On March 18, 1,437 elementary, junior high and high school students poured into Louisville's Commonwealth Convention Center, and they were armed. They were there to compete in the second annual National Archery in the Schools Championship The students came primarily from Kentucky, but also from Georgia, Alabama and Iowa, states that also have recently begun to offer archery as part of their Physical Education curriculum. A number of minority students participated, and two contestants were in wheelchairs. The youngest competitors this year were in the K-2 grade bracket. The explosion of young Robin Hoods is the result of a program initiated in 2002 in Kentucky schools called the National Archery in the Schools Program "When we started the Archery in the Schools program, our goal was to have it in 120 schools in three years," said Roy Grimes, deputy commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, who has is the guiding force for the program.

Sunday, May 16, 2004 For seats in the Kentucky General Assembly Endorsements
This week's Kentucky primary features a number of contested Northern Kentucky legislative races, a welcome trend that serves the public interest. Here are our endorsements. 11th Senate District, Republican
The spotlight is on this heated race between incumbent Dick Roeding, Senate president pro tem from Lakeside Park, and intraparty rival Rep. Charlie Walton of Florence, criticized by some party leaders for his surprising challenge of a popular, influential lawmaker. Both have ably served in Frankfort for more than a decade, but we support Dick Roeding in this race. Walton makes good arguments for fairer education funding and greater clout for Boone County, but those don't add up to a convincing reason for district voters to retire the No. 2 leader in the Senate. Losing Roeding would be a blow to Northern Kentucky. Shifting political power bases are at play here. Walton's base is in fast-growing Boone County, which dominates the district, while Roeding hails from its Kenton County sliver. That could make things interesting Tuesday. Roeding's legislative record isn't nearly as thin as Walton claims, but he hasn't been as effective in funding issues as his position might suggest. Still, a victorious Walton facing GOP retribution in the legislature might reduce Boone County's clout in Frankfort instead of increasing it. Roeding has collaborated well with both sides of the aisle and moved a lot of bills that end up not having his name on them.
