CENTER FOR ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC POLICY State Legislative News: CAMPAIGN 2003 New Mexico’s SBHCs at the State Capitol New Mexico SBHC advocates gathered at the state capitol in Santa Fe on February 7, 2003 in conjunction with the national awareness campaign. Armed with scrap books, banners, give-away items, and buttons, the advocates shared stories, photographs and data with their state leaders. A declaration was read on the floor of both the house and the senate. The house incorporated the declaration into a memorial asking the board of education to support school-based health centers. New York to Host Advocates in Albany The New York School-Based Primary Care Coalition traveled to Albany on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 in the face of a significant state budget deficit. The Coalition’s primary goal is to sustain the current level of funding for the state’s $11 million SBHC investment. [ To preview their advocacy agenda click here ] Hundreds of students from across the state participated in meetings with their respective representatives in the State Assembly. The students shared their own stories about the impact of the school-based health centers, and asked the legislators to maintain state support for school-based health centers.

How can you increase your earning potential and marketability? Advance within your school corporation? Become a leader in curriculum development without giving up teaching? Become an Instructional Media Specialist Integrating computers and other modern information technologies into the curriculum is a top priority for many school systems, and school media specialists are the people who know how to do this.
As an instructional school media specialist, you will:
  • work with modern information technologies in a school setting.
  • promote reading for pleasure and instruction.
  • plan programs to improve student and teacher use of information resources.
The number of school districts looking for full-time professionals in school library media and information technology has more than doubled since 1990. Many schools-both elemetary and secondary-are increasing their number of of full-time school media specialists. Plus, large nubmers of school librarians and media specialists are projected to retire in the next few years. There's never been a better time to enter the field and make a difference in education. "I made the change from public library work to a school media environment primarily because I wanted to be more directly involved with children in their education, and I wanted to facilitate the development of their information literacy skills-especially a lifelong love of reading. I have more of a sense of connectedness, continuity, and deeper personal satisfaction as a school media specialist than I experienced previously in public libraries."

At stake is how much control college administrators will have over student college newspapers. Staff members of the Governor's State University Innovator say that college officials exercised unconstitutional prior restraint over the newspaper. Organizations that fight for the First Amendment rights of student newspapers, like the Illinois College Association and the Student Press Law Center , say that if the staff of the Innovator loses their battle then college administrators will have the same powers over college papers that the US Supreme Court gave high school administrators in a 1989 case that originated in the St. Louis Area: Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier.
