PTO vs. PTA
The national PTA’s position as presumed leader of the parent group world is no longer a given. More than 75 percent of U.S. groups are now PTOs.
(updated August 2002)
By Tim Sullivan It was perhaps the loudest reaction on the first day of the 2000 national PTA convention in Chicago. Illinois Superintendent of Schools Dr. Glenn McGee remembered a day earlier in his career when he made the “mistake” of referring to parent groups as “PTOs.” Almost on cue, the crowd of 1,500 or so PTAers roared their disapproval. Loud boos echoed through the cavernous meeting hall. He may as well have said that he hated the Cubs, the White Sox, the Bulls, and the Bears. Why the strong emotions? Are PTOs hurting kids or doing something wrong? While no PTA defenders go that far, there is a subtle but undeniable implication that those groups that aren’t part of the PTA are in some way choosing to abandon the cause of children. For some groups, the PTO vs. PTA debate is simply a matter of dollars and cents (either “we don’t want to send any money out of our school” or “are we getting enough service for the money we send out of our school?”). For others, though, the debate takes on a significantly increased importance. “If we don’t speak for all children, then who will?” the PTA’s most loyal defenders often ask.
Independence vs. Affiliation

Making Parent Involvement Meaningful by Karen Rasmussen When Lynn Townsend's daughter was a sophomore at South Laurel High School in London, Ky., she couldn't get into the Latin class she needed to continue her studies from the previous year. Townsend went to the school's open house to learn how to remedy the situation. By the time she left, Townsend had joined the school's committee on restructuring time, which was charged with finding a way to improve teaching and learning at the school.
Beyond Fundraising and Baking Cookies
"Parents are equal to teachers and the principal" in the decision-making process, explains Charles Edwards, director of the Division of School-Based Decision Making at the Kentucky Department of Education. Because parents have a stake in what their children learn, they need to have a voice in deciding what is taught and how it is taught, he explains. Townsend thinks that all parents should have the same kind of opportunity as she to contribute to their children's education. "This type of involvement makes you understand what ownership really means," she says. South Laurel High School's principal, Roger Marcum agrees, noting that he has observed throughout his career in education that good principals have always been those who value the input of all stakeholders, including parents. In the past, schools relied on parents primarily to raise money for the school and to bake cookies and cupcakes for school parties, he says. Although these activities have value, Marcum works to convince parents that "their input is a valuable resource."

Schools Rely Heavily on Parent Support Groups

[Article written by Lori Harrison from THE MESSENGER] Third-grader Cierra Gonzalez (center) and other students “Roll for the Dough” on the gym floor at Jesse Stuart on Friday afternoon as part of the PTA’s reward for being the top sellers in a recent fund raiser at the school. Cierra rolled around enough to collect $17 for her efforts which she was able to keep as was all the other students that rolled. (Messenger Photo/Jim Pearson) Parent support groups – whether they go by the initials PTA, PTO or PTSA – play a big role in the schools. “What we try to do is promote the strong relationship between the parents and the teachers,” said Mary Ann Thomas, secretary of Jesse Stuart Elementary School’s PTA. At Jesse Stuart, that involves sponsoring fund-raisers to buy things teachers need in the classroom, giving scholarships to help teachers earn their master’s degree, and purchasing the costume for the school’s new mascot.
