What's happening out there in the real world? Join us in exploring this planet (and others) for an eclectic potpourri of topics that geographers find so interesting. We can look at the fun and the serious, the good, the bad, and the ugly of the world to find meaning, relevance, and insight. Themes on this ever-changing page will follow whimsy, serendipity, and whatever drives whoever contributes items. The current web site recommendation (but be sure to see past selections below): Yann Arthus-Bertrand is famous for his photographs from above, which are ideal for geographers and for learning geography. Check 0ut a nice gallery of examples at http://www.yannarthusbertrand.org/ . There are three sites from the front page and each should be explored. Start with the middle site, www.yannarthusbertrand2.org and then click Earth From Above panel (heart-shaped land feature) and note the wonderful images that can be viewed or loaded as wallpaper. You can also use the country selection option at upper left. Fantastic views! (Also be sure to explore the www.altitude-photo.com

His purpose was to add information to the kentucky Geographic Informationdatabases to aid officials charged with protecting the state s forests.
    http://www.morehead-st.edu/focus/focus02/maingi.html
Remote sensing gives valuable synoptic view to researchers The Landsat 7 satellite that Dr. John Maingi uses to obtain images of the earth, orbits 438 miles above the wilds of Kenya where he did his first research. In those forests, he recalls being chased by a cobra and crossing a crocodile infested river in a rickety dugout canoe. "I was scared to death," said Maingi, a remote sensing specialist and assistant professor of geography in the Institute for Regional Analysis and Public Policy. Maingi admits to a healthy fear of snakes and can relate many stories of the deadly and aggressive vipers commonly found in Africa. "About 10 years ago, we were going somewhere to walk. By the roadside was this young girl. She was about 13 years old, and she had been bitten by a puff adder. They left me there and took her to a dispensary for medicine, but she never made it," Maingi said. Remote sensing technology and satellite images have made the cumbersome, and sometimes dangerous, fieldwork of the traditional forester somewhat secondary. While information gathered on the ground and from aerial photography does augment information gathered from satellite images, it is no longer the primary means of research in cataloging forest inventories.
