The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which has offices in every State and Commonwealth, collects, compiles, and disseminates data on natural hazards and water, energy, biological, and mineral resources in the State of Kentucky. The long-term earth science information base of the USGS is a valued resource for the public and private sectors, academia, State and local agencies, and other Federal agencies. This Fact Sheet describes some of the USGS activities in Kentucky.
National Water-Quality Assessment Program
The USGS's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program was established to describe the status and trends in the quality of a large, representative part of the Nation's surface- and ground-water resources and to identify the natural and human factors that affect their quality. The NAWQA Program provides vital physical, chemical, and biological water-quality data to State and local officials charged with water-use planning and water-quality management. From 1987 through 1990, the USGS collected water-quality data in the Kentucky River Basin as a part of the pilot NAWQA Program. The 7,000-square-mile Kentucky River Basin is the most densely populated major river basin in the State. The Kentucky River and its tributaries are used extensively for municipal and industrial water supply, recreation, and wastewater discharge and assimilation. The River provides more than 95 percent of the drinking-water supply to the 600,000 people in the Basin. Some components of water quality examined were the distribution of metals and other trace elements in the sediment and water; nutrients, sediments, and pesticides also were studied in the streams of the Basin.

What kinds of music have they heard at these concerts? geography skills Have studentslocate US Highway 23 in Eastern kentucky on a road map of kentucky.
    http://www.courier-journal.com/education/lessonplans/970303blue.html
Bluegrass Music Discussion: What do students think of when they hear the phrase, "Kentucky music"? Does the class include any fans of country or bluegrass music? Have students attended concerts by Kentucky musicians? What kinds of music have they heard at these concerts? Geography skills: Have students locate US Highway 23 in Eastern Kentucky on a road map of Kentucky. Did they know that this stretch of road from Ashland to Letcher County has been nicknamed "Country Music Highway"? Exploring music: How many of the musicians mentioned in today's story are familiar to students? Are there any that they do not know? Try to collect samples of music (tapes, CDs, etc.) to play for students especially if they are not familiar with the artists. Even if they are not fans of a particular style of music, challenge them to find something that they like or find interesting in the music of these artists. Music and society: The story mentions Merle Travis and the tradition of music that originated in the coal-mining communities of Western Kentucky. A number of Kentucky singers have recorded songs about coal-mining. Try to locate some of these to play for students, and encourage them to explore how work and music are often intertwined. What other areas of work can they think of that are reflected in songs with which they are familiar? In what other ways does the music of a society reflect its interests and occupations? Vocabulary: Do students understand the terms folklore, folk music, folklorist and how they relate to music and art? What is meant by the traditions of string music or the traditions of Kentucky music? How does a city host a concert? In what ways is Kentucky cited as being a particularly rich state?
