About the Kentucky Center for School Safety Kentucky has taken a major step to address the issue of school safety. With the passage of House Bill 330 in the 1998 General Assembly, an opportunity was established to create safe, secure learning environments where all children can successfully achieve. The mission and scope of work for the Kentucky Center for School Safety (KCSS), as established in House Bill 330 , demanded that a statewide collaborative effort be undertaken. The KCSS is operated by a consortium of three state universities (Eastern Kentucky University, University of Kentucky, and Murray State University), with the assistance of the Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA). Trustee Education and Board Development Conducting trustee education and board development programs are AGB core competencies. It's what we do best. AGB programs enable governing and foundation board members to explore their responsibilities and deepen their understanding of state issues and funding priorities. Three state nursing boards examine continued competency by Alexia Green, PhD, RN, and Benni S. Ogden, MSE, RN Consumers, legislators and regulatory agencies continue to raise questions regarding how nurses maintain competence in a rapidly changing health care environment. These questions are forcing the profession to reexamine the traditional methods of assuring accountability to the public: the initial licensure exam (NCLEX), continuing education and certifications. The Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) held a series of open forums during 1997 to provide opportunities to examine competency issues. This has resulted in the development of a model for determining initial and continuing competency. At present, graduation from an approved school, passing the NCLEX and effective communication in English constitute the state's requirements for initial competence. Kentucky is considering a clinical internship in which the student would demonstrate predetermined clinical standards before taking the NCLEX exam. The state is also considering the development of a professional portfolio as a tool to demonstrate continued competency. Currently, continued competency is measured by having no history of disciplinary action and earning required continuing education hours. The professional portfolio would include skill assessment inventories, peer reviews, formal nursing courses and continuing education courses.

Teachers must know not only how to use technology but also when and why to use it. Teacher technology standards identify essential skills teachers need for effective use of computers and other electronic equipment in schools today. State teacher licensure and certification has not kept pace with rapid changes in technology and teaching. Linking technology skills assessments to licensing requirements helps ensure that teachers have the skills to support and guide students and to increase student learning using technology. Cunha, M.D. of Pediatric Associates for their outstanding contributions and collaborations in public health. Gary Crum, Ph.D, District Director of Health, and Rice Leach, M.D., Kentucky Commissioner for Public Health, will present the awards at 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the Second Annual Northern Kentucky Poverty Symposium. This symposium will be held in the Otto M. Budig Theatre located in the University Center of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights. “It is very appropriate that we present this important award to Brian Angus and his staff at this poverty symposium since one of the major accomplishments that the agency is being recognized is their coordination and creation of the first White Paper on Poverty in Northern Kentucky that was presented at their first Northern Kentucky Poverty Symposium last year,” said Crum. “They collaborated with the Health Department on the issues related to access to health care.
