John F. Kennedy
Early Life
Congressman and Senator
In 1946, Kennedy ran successfully for a Boston-based seat in the U.S. House of Representatives; he was reelected in 1948 and 1950. As a congressman he backed social legislation that benefited his working-class constituents. Although generally supporting President Harry S. Truman's foreign policies, he criticized what he considered the administration's weak stand against the Communist Chinese. Kennedy continued to advocate a strong, anti-Communist foreign policy throughout his career. Restless in the House, Kennedy challenged incumbent Republican senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., in 1952. Although the Republican presidential candidate, Dwight D. Eisenhower, won in Massachusetts as well as the country as a whole, Kennedy showed his remarkable vote-getting appeal by defeating Lodge. A year later, on Sept. 12, 1953, Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier. The couple had three children: Caroline Bouvier (b. Nov. 27, 1957), John Fitzgerald, Jr. (b. Nov. 25, 1960), and a second son who died in infancy in August 1963. Kennedy was a relatively ineffectual senator. During parts of 1954 and 1955 he was seriously ill with back ailments and was therefore unable to play an important role in government. Critics observed that he made no effort to oppose the anti-civil libertarian excesses of Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin. His friends later argued, not entirely persuasively, that he would have voted to censure McCarthy if he had not been hospitalized at the time. During his illness Kennedy worked on a book of biographical studies of American political heroes. Published in 1956 under the title Profiles in Courage, it won a Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1957. Like his earlier book on English foreign policy, it revealed his admiration for forceful political figures. This faith in activism was to become a hallmark of his presidency.

President John F. Kennedy
Ft. Worth, Texas
November 22, 1963
It was a cool, drizzly morning in Ft. Worth, Texas. President and Mrs. Kennedy, who had spent the night in that town, planned to leave for nearby Dallas following breakfast . The Kennedys would travel the short distance to Love Field aboard Air Force One. Greeting a crowd of 12,000 people in front of the Hotel Texas that morning, JFK commented on various matters - including the absence of his wife. Mrs. Kennedy, he noted, wasn’t quite ready. But, as he reminded everyone, "She always looks so much better than the rest of us." Some of the President’s words were eerily prophetic. In just a few hours, people everywhere would be utterly shocked by just how "dangerous and uncertain" the world had become. GO TO CHAPTER 2 Author: Carole D. Bos, J.D.

Kennedy President John Kennedy traveled to Texas in late 1963, preparing for his re-election campaign. The trip ended with one of the biggest crimes in American history. What really happened that day is still debated. Shocked and surprised by the murder, newspeople tried to keep functioning and reporting to the American people. Initially, the visit was routine NBC correspondent Robert MacNeil rode in the press bus seven vehicles behind the president's open limousine. The motorcade was moving towards a luncheon location. The crowds appeared generally friendly. It was monotonous. He told his story in his book The Right Place at the Right Time MacNeil was drowsy. His thoughts drifted in a very unusual direction as the bus rolled along.

THE GREAT ZAPRUDER FILM HOAX Edited by James H. Fetzer, Ph.D. Perhaps no greater debate has raged in the history of the study of the death of JFK than over the authenticity of a 27-second home movie of the assassination, known as "the Zapruder film". This footage has been described as "the most significant amateur recording of a news event in history". It is surely one of the most controversial. Some students of the crime take it as the absolute foundation for understanding what actually transpired. Others are not so sure. This volume emerged from The Zapruder Film Symposium, which was organized and moderated by James H. Fetzer on the Duluth Campus of the University of Minnesota, 9-11 May 2003, and may well prove to have been among the most important conferences in the history of the study of the death of JFK. Certainly, the discoveries reported here remove any question about the film's authenticity and reveal the lengths to which the conspirators were willing to go to cover up the true cause of death of John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Kennedy's election symbolized optimism and youth in America, the rise of a new generation. His assasination in Dallas seemed to rob America of some of its hope and vitality. Elected:
The Early Years
John F. Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts. He grew up in comfort. Kennedy first attended the Dexter school in Brookline. In 4th-6th grade, he attended the Riverdale Country Day School, in New York. From 1931 to 1935, he attended the Choate Academy, were he was an average student. Although he graduated with a ranking of 62 out of 112, he was voted "most likely to succeed." From 1936-1940, Kennedy attended Harvard. He wrote a senior thesis that was published and earned him over $40,000. It was titled "Why England Slept," and explained the British action regarding the agreement with Germany at Munich. During World War II, Kennedy served in the navy. He commanded a patrol boat which, while on duty in August 1943, was rammed by a Japanese destroyer. Two members of his crew were killed. He managed to swim for four hours while helping his surviving crew members. He was discovered by Island dwellers and was rescued by the Navy a few days later. In 1946, Kennedy ran for the U.S. House of Representatives. He won handily. He earned a reputation while in the House for firmly standing up for his beliefs. In 1952 he ran for the Senate. He was able to buck the Eisenhower landslide of that year. On the one hand, he was a strong critic of Communism, and yet he was also critical of the interventionist anti-Communist policies of John Foster Dulles. He was, however, strangely uncritical of the "Witchhunts" of Joseph McCarthy. In 1956, Kennedy wrote Profiles of Courage, a biography of a group of politicians who took courageous but unpopular stands.

Washington as It Was, 1923-1959
On January 20, Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first U.S. president sworn into office in January. It was his second of four inaugurations; the first had been held fours years earlier on March 4, 1933. Roosevelt's first inauguration had been shadowed by the onset of the Great Depression. Within a week of taking office, the new President had declared a Federal Bank Holiday. Roosevelt's Second Inaugural Address was optimistic about the gains that had been made during his first administration, while acknowledging that much more was needed. In his speech he shared his vision of the nation's potential and challenged Americans to continue in a united effort to address poverty. Let us ask again: Have we reached the goal of our vision of that fourth day of March 1933? Have we found our happy valley? . . .

The inaugural ceremony is a defining moment in a President's career, and no one knew this better than John F. Kennedy as he prepared for his own inauguration of January 20, 1961. He wanted his address to be short and cleadevoid of partisan rhetoric and focused on foreign policy. He began constructing the speech in late November, working from a speech file kept by his secretary and soliciting suggestions from friends and advisors. While his colleagues submitted ideas and drafts, clergymen provided lists of Biblical quotations. The final product, however, was distinctly the work of Kennedy himself. Aides recount that every sentence was worked, reworked, and reduced.
Kennedy wrote his thoughts in his nearly indecipherable longhand on a yellow legal pad. The climax of the speech and its most memorable phrase, "Ask not what your country can do for yoask what you can do for your country," was honed down from a thought about sacrifice that Kennedy had long held in his mind and had expressed in various ways in campaign speeches.

In 1940, Kennedy graduated from Harvard University cum laude. A year later he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In 1943, he became a war hero when he helped save the lives of the men on the boat he commanded, PT 109, when they were torpedoed by a Japanese destroyer. With his back reinjured, he managed to swim with his surviving men to an island three miles away and eventually they were rescued five days later.
Kennedy ran for Congress for the Boston district and was reelected twice. He then ran for United States Senator and won against a tough fight against Republican Henry Cabot Lodge. In 1956, he was just barely defeated for the Democratic vice-presidential nomination. Two years later he was reelected to the U.S. Senate.
In 1960 he ran for President of the United States against then Vice-President, Richard M. Nixon. At age 43, Kennedy became the youngest elected President of the United States, winning by less than one percent of the popular vote.
