The Greatest Speeches of President John F. Kennedy > Customer Review #1: The Greatest Speeches Of President John F. Kennedy

President Kennedy guided the United States through the most dangerous times since the Second World War. In his 1,000 days in office he lead America through the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Berlin blockade, the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, and through turbulent times in the cities - the Freedom Riders, segregation and integration, race riots, and lynchings. But by instituting progressive policies of peace abroad and equality at home, President Kennedy made enemies of those who wished for the status quo. His death was a great loss - the loss of what "could have been", the loss of a rare breed of politican who inspired people with a clear vision of the future.

John F. Kennedy National Historic Site preserves the birthplace in 1917 and boyhood home of the 35th President of the United States. The modest frame house in suburban Boston was also the first home shared by the president's father and mother, Joseph P. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, and represents the social and political beginnings of one of the world's most prominent families. Shortly after President Kennedy's assassination in 1963, his family repurchased the birthplace and restored it as a memorial to him under the close supervision of Rose Kennedy. The John F. Kennedy National Historic Site was established in 1969 following the family's donation of the home to the National Park Service. Park Rangers present guided tours of the birthplace, as well as the nearby neighborhood including homes, schools, and church associated with the Kennedy family. John Fitzgerald Kennedy Born: Birthplace:
Brookline, Mass. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Mass., on May 29, 1917. His father, Joseph P. Kennedy, was ambassador to Great Britain from 1937 to 1940. Kennedy was graduated from Harvard University in 1940 and joined the navy the next year. He became skipper of a PT boat that was sunk in the Pacific by a Japanese destroyer. Although given up for lost, he swam to a safe island, towing an injured enlisted man. After recovering from a war-aggravated spinal injury, Kennedy entered politics in 1946 and was elected to Congress. In 1952, he ran against Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., of Massachusetts, and won. Kennedy was married on Sept. 12, 1953, to Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, by whom he had three children: Caroline, John Fitzgerald, Jr. (died in a 1999 plane crash), and Patrick Bouvier (died in infancy).
