E ventually several of these clans came together to form one Kazakh nation, but by 1730 they were already seeking Russian assistance to help in their struggle against Mongolian invaders. As history would show, this turned out to be a mixed blessing. M igrating Russians began to threaten the Kazakh way of life. With the communist takeover in 1917, the Soviet Union took the land as State property. Under Stalin close to 2 million Kazakhs died. After WW2 so many Russians moved to Kazakhstan that the Kazakhs became a minority in their own country. T oday much has changed. Russians are still to be seen in large numbers, but Kazakhstan is now an independent nation. It still is influenced a great deal by its big brother to the north and looks like this tendency will increase in the near future.

For a thousand years after the birth of Christ, Central Asia was the scene of pendulum-like shifts of power between nomadic hordes and the sedentary civilisations of Eurasia's periphery. Horses, rather than silk, had the greatest influence over regional events, since the vast grasslands fed millions of them. Mounted archers were the most potent military force in the region. The Huns, the Western Turks, Arabs and the Chinese all ventured into the region during this period.
