THE HISTORY OF KAZAKHSTAN Kazakhstan is a country with a rich historical and cultural past. Its geographical and geopolitical situation has played a significant role in promoting the development of Kazakhstan. Being located in the center of Eurasia, Kazakhstan has long been at the intersection of ancient world civilization and at the crossroads of major transport arteries. Thus it has been a site for a negotiation of social and economic, cultural and ideological relations between East and West, North and South, between Europe and Asia. At different stages in history, Kazakhstan has been home to many nations with distinctive cultural histories which have, in turn, been absorbed into modern Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan in Ancient Times In the early part of the first millenium B.C., the nomadic Skythian-Saks civilization prospered on the territory of the Central Asian steppes. Many of the cultural landmarks of this civilization still exist on the steppe today. Especially impressive are articles of family life and decorations made of bronze and gold in the so-called “animist” style, excavated from mounds in different regions of Kazakhstan. The tomb of “The Gold Saks Warrior-Prince”, discovered in the town of Issyk, close to the capital city of Almaty, is famous for its integrity, beauty and elegance. During the following centuries in the steppes of modern Kazakhstan the powerful state of the Huns was formed. This exerted great influence on the geopolitical map of the world of that period. It is know that the Great Roman empire was caught unawares by an attack launched by the daring Hun warrior, Attila. Along with their achievements in battle, the Huns brought with them into Europe great cultural influence, contributing significantly to modern European culture – the simplest example of this influence being trousers.

In the early days, Kazakhstan was not much more than a number of nomadic empires. Because of the trade along the Silk Road to China, wealth and civilization were established in the south but the northern part remained mainly nomadic until the Russian involvement in the 18 th century. The known history of Kazakhstan starts 6 centuries BC when the power of the Achaemenid Empire of Persia reached beyond the Amu-Darya river (currently the border between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan). While expanding his empire to Central Asia, Alexander the Great defeated the Persians in 330 BC. This was the start of increased contact and trade between Europe and this part of Asia. The exact date when silk reached the west from China remains unknown, but the caravan routes through this territoria between the two main civilization centers of the world at that moment became the main routes for trade of this admired fabric and are now known as the Silk Road. In the centuries after the birth of Christ, Turkic and Mongol tribes settled in the area. Islam was introduced by Arabs in the 8 th century. The Mongol tribes led by Genghis Khan invaded the area between 1219 and 1224 and the country became part of his great empire.

Sculptures of the Türks of Kazakhstan and Mongolia The sculptures on the high plateaux of Kazakhstan are distinguished, in particular, by the fact that they depict women. Clearly, this is an example of the cult of the primogenitrix known among the Turkic peoples as Umai baba s, which date from the twelfth century and are associated with the progress of the Kïpchak from Central Asia to the steppes of southern and eastern Europe. Transformed in time and space, the rites and cults of the ancient Türks underwent great changes, but the central idea remained the same, as expressed in rites, in the principle of sacrifice and in the erection of idols in honour of ancestors. Sculptures of this sort are also found in Mongolia. For example, stone images of people wearing neither belt nor weapon and sometimes wearing tall headgear are found on the monument to Unget. The rite of ancestor remembrance, described by William of Rubruck on the basis of his observation of the Polovtsians, explains the purpose of the Kïpchak/Cuman sacrificial altar:

A Soyuz rocket is transferred to the launch pad Baikonur: from the steppes of Kazakhstan to space
When Frank De Winne, Sergei Zaletin and Yuri Lonchakov are launched into space from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for their taxi mission to the International Space Station (ISS) they will be following in some very illustrious footsteps. Literally, because Baikonur is a place of real space history, linked with the name of Sergei Pavlovich Korolev. It is a story of triumph, tragedy and disappointment but also of hope and future.
Baikonur was once at the heart of the super-secretive space programme of the former Soviet Union. Today the launch base of all Russian manned space missions is situated in independent Kazakhstan. There the Russians hire the 5500 square-kilometre cosmodrome territory. Nowadays Europeans and Americans are regular visitors. Their satellites are launched from Baikonur or their astronauts travel into space on board a Soyuz spacecraft.

Astana - History A stana was originally founded as a fortress in 1824 and named Akmolinsk. I n 1862, the settlement acquired the status of a town. The city became an administrative centre in 1868. It was the capital of the former Akmolinsk region until 1961, when it was renamed Tselinograd (Russian for Virgin City). Historians state that in the 19 th century Akmola was a large commercial and economic centre of the steppe. This land was always famous for its plenty, including a wide assortment of dairy products, such as kumis, shubat and ayran. Kazakhstan's capital was a tiny mining town until the 1950s, when Krushchev announced his Virgin Lands scheme to turn 250,000 sq km (155,000 sq mi) of Kazakhstan steppe into wheat fields. Astana became the project's capital, was renamed Tselinograd (Virgin Lands City), and became the centre of an important grain-growing region. The city's importance was greatly enhanced during this period. There were many new constructions and the establishment of various research and higher educational institutions (teacher training, agriculture, medicine, and engineering and construction). The city's name was changed to Aqmola ("White Grave") in 1992 following Kazakhstan's independence. In 1994 the Kazak government resolved to transfer the national capital from Almaty to Aqmola, a process completed in 1997, and the city's name was changed

Almaty - History Parade on Victory Day Almaty is a relatively new city, but it is heir to the many influences which have shaped Central Asia. This land of vast deserts, sweeping steppes, ancient cities and high mountains has been a crossroads of cultures and conquerors for millennia. The earliest people here were Aryans, members of a "white" race. It is said that the Kazaks, despite their current oriental appearance, were in the beginning fair and long-nosed. Conquest and intermarriage have produced the people we see today. Their history began around 2000 BC, when tent dwelling nomads started moving south and west across Central Asia. They had no written language, but the Assyrians wrote of them in the 9th century, BC. It is thought that they may have been the ancestors of the Medes and Persians, who originated the first monotheistic religion, named after its founder, Zoroaster. They were succeeded by new groups of Aryans, the Scythians and Sarmatians, who had a similar nomadic life style. Although they, too, were without a written language, they are known to have been extremely clever, taming the horse, inventing the stirrup, and producing crafts of great beauty and utility. Both the Greeks and the Romans have left us written records of their encounters with these skillful mounted warriors. Next came the Huns, or Hsiung-nu, as the Chinese called them, another race of fierce fighters on horseback. Unlike their predecessors, who spoke an Iranian language, the Huns were the first of the Turkic peoples to sweep across Central Asia. According to the Chinese who described them as, "hairy", they had prominent noses and deep-set eyes. When the Chinese subdued the Hsiung-nu in 52 BC, wealthy Roman matrons began to wear diaphanous silk from China. With Central Asia at peace, several trade routes were developed which ultimate1y came to be known as the Silk Road.
