Research
M y research concerns the changes in the post-Soviet urban landscape and is financed by the Swedish research council within the project “The Post-Soviet City in the XXI Century” (see project description below). Additional support has been provided by the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography (SSAG), the Royal Academy of Sciences (KVA), and the Kennan Institute of Advanced Russian studies, Washington DC.

Kazakhstan is highly dependent on trade with Russia, exchanging its natural resources for finished consumer and industrial goods. Kazakhstan now finds itself with serious pollution problems, backward technology, and little experience in foreign markets. The government in 1992 continued to push privatization of the economy and freed many prices. Output in 1992 dropped because of problems common to the ex-Soviet Central Asian republics, especially the cumulative effects of the disruption of old supply channels and the slow process of creating new economic institutions. Kazakhstan lacks the funds, technology, and managerial skills for a quick recovery of output. US firms have been enlisted to increase oil output but face formidable obstacles; for example, oil can now reach Western markets only through pipelines that run across independent former Soviet republics. Finally, the end of monolithic Communist control has brought ethnic grievances into the open. The 6 million Russians in the republic, formerly the favored class, now face the hostility of a society dominated by Muslims. Ethnic rivalry will be just one of the formidable obstacles to the prioritization of national objectives and the creation of a productive, technologically advancing society. stephan.harrison@geog.ox.ac.uk Research Interests
Dr Stephan Harrison's main research interests lie in mountain geomorphology. He has worked for nine field seasons on the glaciers of Patagonia studying their fluctuation histories over the last 15,000 years and the geomorphological impact of recent glacier retreat on valley-side slopes.
Dr Harrison was also recently the UK-coordinator on an EU INCO-COPERNICUS project which examined glacier retreat, climate change and hydrological responses in the northern Tian Shan mountains of Kazakhstan. The project employed a number of methods, including dendroclimatology, analysis of data from climate monitoring stations and analysis of historical records, to examine changes in the geomorphology of the glaciated Zailiisky Alatau mountains. In such arid regions of central Asia much of the water used for economic development comes from summer melting of glaciers and permafrost, and these supplies are replenished during winter snowfalls. With global warming, such supplies are under threat and this will have profound political, economic and social repercussions.
Work in contemporary glacial environments allows him to test models of landform evolution from the Quaternary of the British Isles, and he is involved in research on the upland geomorphology of southwest Ireland, southwest England, North Wales and northeast England.

    School In Bed
Uralsk, Kazakhstan Biology, chemistry, English, geography, Kazakh, literature, mathematics, physics and Russian. Six students of various ages successfully studied many or all of these subjects while battling illnesses including immobilizing headaches, epilepsy, and severe flu. They accomplished the school year with the aid of dedicated tutors and Operation Blessing's Bless-A-Child program.
Depressed, Sana sat in her bed wondering what her fourth grade class was doing. Much had happened in ten weeks since she last attended school. What begun as the flu, had escalated into the 10-year-old girl developing severe complications with her kidneys. Now out of danger, Sana had been released from the hospital to complete the recovery process. Doctors said she could return to school next term, but until then there was allot to catch up on!
After the hospital bills, Zhanna and her husband didn't have any extra money for a teacher to tutor Sana. To add to the problem, School #17's funding recently had been significantly reduced cutting out any hope of adequate tutoring. Even with the cut funding, the school was required by law to provide education for Sana and five other homebound children. Hearing about School #17 dilemma, Operation Blessing's outreach center Emmanuel Mission was able to support this tutoring program through the Bless-A-Child program! Through this help, teachers were able to spend more quality time on the important subjects with the students.

    Introduction
Native Kazakhs, a mix of Turkic and Mongol nomadic tribes who migrated into the region in the 13th century, were rarely united as a single nation. The area was conquered by Russia in the 18th century and Kazakhstan became a Soviet Republic in 1936. During the 1950s and 1960s agricultural "Virgin Lands" program, Soviet citizens were encouraged to help cultivate Kazakhstan's northern pastures. This influx of immigrants (mostly Russians, but also some other deported nationalities) skewed the ethnic mixture and enabled non-Kazakhs to outnumber natives. Independence has caused many of these newcomers to emigrate. Current issues include: developing a cohesive national identity; expanding the development of the country's vast energy resources and exporting them to world markets; and continuing to strengthen relations with neighboring states and other foreign powers.
