    Introduction
... Transnational Issue Introduction Kazakhstan Background: Native Kazakhs, a mix of Turkic and Mongol nomadic tribes who migrated into the region in the 13th century, were rarely united as a single nation. The area was conquered by Russia in the 18th century and Kazakhstan became a Soviet Republic in 1936. During the 1950s and 1960s agricultural "Virgin Lands" program, Soviet citizens were encouraged to help cultivate Kazakhstan's northern pastures. This influx of immigrants (mostly Russians, but also some other deported nationalities) skewed the ethnic mixture and enabled non-Kazakhs to outnumber natives. Independence has caused many of these newcomers to emigrate. Current issues include: developing a cohesive national identity; expanding the development of the country's vast energy resources and exporting them to world markets; achieving a sustainable economic growth outside the oil, gas, and mining sectors; and strengthening relations with neighboring states and other foreign powers. Geography Kazakhstan Location: Central Asia, northwest of China; a small portion west of the Ural River in eastern-most Europe

    May/June 2003 Volume 54, Number 3 May/June 2003
Volume 54, Number 3 The Soul of Kazakhstan Written by Alma Kunanbay
Photographed by Wayne Eastep National independence begins with the reawakening of ethnic self-awareness within the framework of both local and world culture. Kazakhs, as bearers of the knowledge of their own heritage, are once again entering the arena of world history, and they are worthy of the interest and attention of the world's mainstream cultures. Kazakhs can enter the modern, global cultural conversation as equals. The art and culture of a nomadic society are more than art and culture in their contemporary meanings. Rather, they are the means that assure preservation of the fabric of the society. This sprawling landscape is fantastically diverse. It includes almost every geographic feature known to humankind except an exit to the open sea. Most importantly, this diverse geography determines the country's natural conditions and thereby its economy and culture. The dominant theme in Kazakhstan's geography is not the soaring mountains or plunging valleys, not its rich forests or dappled lakes, not its broad rivers or arid deserts; it is the all-important, all-encompassing steppe. The steppe zone stretches more than 2200 kilometers (1375 mi) from the northern part of the Caspian depression to the foothills of the Altai Mountains. The steppe is at times dusty and dry, at times snow- and ice-covered, then suddenly fragrant and full of the enchanting sounds and colors of spring. The steppe, which at a fleeting glance seems empty, constitutes a truly unique symbiosis of plant, animal and human life. The steppe demands contemplation, feeling and acclimation; then it opens up to you and gives you strength, and does not let you go.

The general extent of boundaries of Kazakhstan is almost 12,2 thousand kms, including 600 kms in the Caspian sea (in west).
    Natural conditions and resources
Kazakhstan is situated in the center of the Euroasian continent, at almost equal distance from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and is also considerably distant from the Indian ocean. Such deep continental layout appreciably determines it natural conditions. More then a quarter of Kazakhstan's territiry are occupied with steppes, half - with deserts and half-deserts, other quarter - with mountains, sea, lakes and rivers. There are almost 22 ìëí. Hectares of woods and plantings in kazakhstan, there are 11 thousands of the rivers and streams, more than 7 thousands of lakes and reservoirs; the vegetative fund exceeds 6 thousands of species, also the animal world is various. The relief of the area rises from extensive lowlands located below the level of an ocean, to highest mountain pikes, reaching 5000 meters level. The territory of it is divided from north to the south by the following nature-climatic zones: steppe-forest, steppe, half-desert, desert, foothill and mountain zone. In the territory of Kazakhstan located between two rather various regions of Eurasia - Central Asia and Siberia the influences of air masses of cold north and hot south cross. That is why main Kazakhstan's nature properties are it's sharp continental type and non-uniform allocation of natural deposits. In some years the spring moves from the south to north for 1,5 - 2 months (when in the south the spring sowing is held, in the North the soils happens to be still frozen and covered by ice and frequent storm snow blizzards).
