Educational and Cultural Exchanges (A) Cultural Exchange In March 1993, the delegation headed by the then President of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music HIRAYAMA Ikuo visited Kazakhstan. It initiated the promotion of cultural exchange between Japan and Kazakhstan. Since then we have invited Kazakhstani key-persons who will contribute to the future cultural ties. The Embassy organized a series of cultural events to introduce traditional and modern Japanese culture. In March 1998, Japanese animators showed their films and delivered lectures about animation. The Embassy also organized lectures about "Japanese religion and culture" and " Ikebana performance". In October the world-famous violinist SENJU Mariko gave a concert and won great admiration from the audience. Kazakhstani people have a great interest in Japanese culture, especially traditional sports (judo, sumo, karate, etc). A delegation of aikido came to Kazakhstan and gave a performance in November 1998. Visit here to listen to various samples of Kazak music. Language The official language in Kazakstan is Kazak. It is a turkic-based dialect. Russian is still used in many parts of Kazakstan. In fact, most business transactions take place in Russian. Part of this is because Kazak was outlawed as a language during the Soviet Era. Kazak is missing many up to date technological terms because of this. Often in conversation, they will insert Russian to fill in the gaps in Kazak. Work is on going to update Kazak. To learn some Kazak, you can visit here. I also have a font that allows you to type in Kazak Cyrillic. Click here to download the zip file. Folk Tales Kazaks love stories. They often use stories as an indirect way to give advice, leaving the final decision up to the listener. Here is a folk tale explaining how Almaty came to existence.

Kazakhstan or Kazakstan
Kazakstan Physical Environment With an area of about 2,717,300 square kilometers, Kazakstan is more than twice the combined size of the other four Central Asian states. The country borders Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan to the south; Russia to the north; Russia and the Caspian Sea to the west; and China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to the east. Topography and Drainage There is considerable topographical variation within Kazakstan. The highest elevation, Khan Tengri Mountain, on the Kyrgyz border in the Tian Shan range, is 6,995 meters; the lowest point, at Karagiye, in the Caspian Depression in the west, is 132 meters below sea level (see fig. 2). Only 12.4 percent of Kazakstan is mountainous, with most of the mountains located in the Altay and Tian Shan ranges of the east and northeast, although the Ural Mountains extend southward from Russia into the northern part of west-central Kazakstan. Many of the peaks of the Altay and Tian Shan ranges are snow covered year-round, and their run-off is the source for most of Kazakstan's rivers and streams. Except for the Tobol, Ishim, and Irtysh rivers (the Kazak names for which are, respectively, Tobyl, Esil, and Ertis), portions of which flow through Kazakstan, all of Kazakstan's rivers and streams are part of landlocked systems. They either flow into isolated bodies of water such as the Caspian Sea or simply disappear into the steppes and deserts of central and southern Kazakstan. Many rivers, streams, and lakes are seasonal, evaporating in summer. The three largest bodies of water are Lake Balkhash, a partially fresh, partially saline lake in the east, near Almaty, and the Caspian and Aral seas, both of which lie partially within Kazakstan.

The biggest name in Kazak cultural history is Abay Kunanbaev , a 19th century poet and man of letters who launched Kazak as a literary language and translated Russian works into Kazak. Before Abay, Kazakstan literature consisted chiefly of long oral poems. Recitals by bards ( aqins ) and contests between them known as aitys are still important and popular. Kazakstan's most impressive textiles originate in the country's north-east, near the 'four corners' region of Kazakstan, Russia, China and Mongolia. The mix of influences is apparent in wall carpets and rugs unmatched in their striking colour combinations and the intricacy of their geometric designs.
k a z a k h s t a n Though Kazaks are Muslim (Sunni) they are not, by and large, strictly so, and Islam is not a major political force. Reasons for this include the Kazakstan's location on the fringe of the Muslim world, and their traditionally nomadic lifestyle, unsuited to central religious authority. Kazak women appear Central Asia's most confident and least restricted, despite the lingering custom of wife-stealing, whereby a man may simply kidnap a woman he wants to marry (often with some collusion, it must be said), leaving her parents with no option but to negotiate the bride-price.
Many Kazaks maintain a seminomadic existence, moving with herds, flocks and yurts from their collective farms to summer pastures every year. An affinity with the horse is shown in sports like
