Almaty - Culture The City of Apples
Almaty is an unusual city. First, it has adapted to the changing times faster than any other Central Asian city. Second, it is a green city. American Rockwell Kent, when delighted upon arriving in Almaty in the 1960s wrote "Alma-Ata is surely a premier city for its green decoration. It seemed to me I was walking through a forest. Buildings are entirely hidden by trees". Almaty continues to be a very green city with straight, tree-lined streets and modern architecture. Normally, buildings are five- or nine-story due to the high seismic activity in the region. The city is decorated with numerous parks and gardens, fountains and flower-beds. Status

The gem of the collection is certainly the "Gold Warrior". It is a figure of a distinguished Skythian warrior dressed in a funeral clothes of gold reconstructed on the basis of fragments found during the excavations of the Issyk burial mound site. It is made of over 4,000 gold pieces, many finely decorated with animal motifs, in the so called "Animal Style". Geological Museum
    Nature Museum

The Nature museum is a section of the Zoology Research Institute of the Academy of Science. It offers two displays: on paleontology and zoology. The paleontology section features some very interesting exhibits with fossilized skeletons of animals and petrified wood found in the territory of Kazakhstan dating back to early geological epochs. The collection includes the original fossilized skeletons of dinosaurs, giant rhinoceroses, various species of proboscideans: mastodon, mammoth, elephant; ancient giant pigs; fossils of tortoise and others and will leave the visitor feeling as if he found a Jurassic park.

It's a friendly and fairly low-rise town, with some attractive tree-lined streets, but it's prone to strong steppe winds. At present, Astana also serves as a transport hub in the very centre of the Republic. All roads leading from Siberia to Central Asia, from China to Europe meet here. Click To Go Back

Otrar Tobe Otrar Tobe, or town, is the largest and most important of the remains of six mediaeval towns located in the Otrar Oasis in south-west Kazakhstan at the confluence of the Arys and Syr Darya rivers.
Otrar Tobe - 14th century Palace © UNESCO First excavated in 1969, the site comprises the spectacular mud-brick remains of a typical Central Asian settlement of the period, including a central citadel shahristan, and a central town area (rabat), suburbs, and earthen fortifications. Since all six towns, and particularly Otrar itself, flourished over a very long period, essentially from the first to the fifteenth century A.D., studying their monuments and remains helps us to grasp the complex history of the region. In addition, the Otrar Oasis is situated at an important junction on the Silk Roads , a trading network dating from the third century B.C. that linked the Mediterranean and China. For this reason too, Otrar tobe and its is a significant part of the culture and history both of Kazakhstan and the region as a whole.

System of Education History Cuisine Customs and Traditions System of Education History Cuisine The Kazakh today is no longer a nomad in the literal sense. Yet the traditions that have evolved over centuries, virtues necessary to survival, are not particularly superfluous today. Strong ties to family, respect for elders, competitiveness, and a high regard for courtesy to others are traits which may well ensure the continued survival of a people in a time of reformation of its statehood, economy, and culture.
By Betsy Wagenhauser Kazakhstan stepped into the world arena as an independent republic in 1991. It is a new nation in transit, charging forward to join the ranks of a world en the threshold of the 21st century. Yet at its heart lies a history rooted in antiquity and a culture suffused with tradition. It boasts a nomadic past and warrior legacy stirring up images of Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan. The ethnic Kazakhs, who now account for almost half of Kazakhstan's population, were primarily pastoral nomads until the middle of the last century. Depending on the climate and nature of the land, they might have easily traveled hundreds of miles, migrating from rich summer pastures to warmer winter quarters, accompanied by their horses, sheep, cattle, goats, and camels.

Kazakhstan Eases Visa Regulations for Americans, Others
Kazakhstan, this weekend, will ease visa regulations for Americans and citizens of 26 other countries who wish to visit Kazakhstan for business, tourist or private trips, officials announced this week in Astana.
To get a visa, an American will simply have to apply for it at a Kazakhstan's embassy or consulate and they will be issued one in due course. In the past, a person needed an invitation from a Kazakh entity processed through the Foreign Ministry before applying for visa. The changes apply to single-entry 1-month visas for business, tourist or private trips.
Kazakhstan will continue to expand the list of such countries in the future, Mr. Konurbayev said.
