Country Info Kazakhstan Introduction Kazakhstan General Data Kazakhstan Maps Kazakhstan Culture ... Kazakhstan Time and Date Kazakhstan Culture Back to Top Before the Russian conquest, the Kazaks had a well-articulated culture based on their nomadic pastoral economy. Although Islam was introduced to most of the Kazaks in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the religion was not fully assimilated until much later. As a result, it coexisted with earlier elements of shamanistic and animistic beliefs. Traditional Kazak belief held that separate spirits inhabited and animated the earth, sky, water, and fire, as well as domestic animals. To this day, particularly honored guests in rural settings are treated to a feast of freshly killed lamb. Such guests are sometimes asked to bless the lamb and to ask its spirit for permission to partake of its flesh. Besides lamb, many other traditional foods retain symbolic value in Kazak culture. Because animal husbandry was central to the Kazaks' traditional lifestyle, most of their nomadic practices and customs relate in some way to livestock. Traditional curses and blessings invoked disease or fecundity among animals, and good manners required that a person ask first about the health of a man's livestock when greeting him and only afterward inquire about the human aspects of his life. The traditional Kazak dwelling is the yurt, a tent consisting of a flexible framework of willow wood covered with varying thicknesses of felt. The open top permits smoke from the central hearth to escape; temperature and draft can be controlled by a flap that increases or decreases the size of the opening. A properly constructed yurt can be cooled in summer and warmed in winter, and it can be disassembled or set up in less than an hour. The interior of the yurt has ritual significance; the right side generally is reserved for men and the left for women.

The biggest name in Kazak cultural history is Abay Qunanbaev, a 19th century poet and man of letters who launched Kazak as a literary language and translated Russian works into Kazak. Before Abay, Kazakstan literature consisted chiefly of long oral poems. Recitals by bards (aqins) and contests between them known as aitys are still important and popular. Kazakstan's most impressive textiles originate in the country's north-east, near the 'four corners' region of Kazakstan, Russia, China and Mongolia. The mix of influences is apparent in wall carpets and rugs unmatched in their striking colour combinations and the intricacy of their geometric designs. Though Kazaks are Muslim (Sunni) they are not, by and large, strictly so, and Islam is not a major political force. Reasons for this include the Kazakstan's location on the fringe of the Muslim world, and their traditionally nomadic lifestyle, unsuited to central religious authority. Kazak women appear Central Asia's most confident and least restricted, despite the lingering custom of wife-stealing, whereby a man may simply kidnap a woman he wants to marry (often with some collusion, it must be said), leaving her parents with no option but to negotiate the bride-price. Many Kazaks maintain a seminomadic existence, moving with herds, flocks and yurts from their collective farms to summer pastures every year. An affinity with the horse is shown in sports like kökpar, the wild free-for-all ancestor of polo (with a headless goat's carcass instead of a ball) and qyz quu, a boy-girl horse chase - if a boy catches a girl he kisses her, if a girl catches a boy she beats him with her riding whip, all the while both of them riding hell for leather.

Culture training is over
So we arrived at PACTEC HQ and have completed our culture training. We've learned some of what we should do (bring a gift of an odd-number of flowers, candy, or wine when invited to someone's house for dinner), some of what not to do (drink with your left hand) and much more that we'll figure out when we get there :) Created by troy . Last modified We arrived in Southern California Sunday afternoon. We were picked up at Ontario's International Airport and dropped us at the accomidations for PACTEC trainees. Tim and I found our way to a grocery store and, after about 3 trips around the store, found what we needed to prepare dinner. Tim did a fine job of preparing Chicken and rice for dinner. In the process of making a salad, I've discovered that California lettuce is much tougher than what I'm used to, and Oklahoma tomatoes are much more flavorful. After dinner (and dishes - mom would be proud), I did some picking on the mandolin, which arrived here intact. I saw the sun set behind the San Bernidino mountains and the Redlands airport's beacon start moving (ok, yeah I like airplanes and airports :) Monday brought an overcast sky and unseasonably (so the locals tell me) cool weather. We received an overview of PACTEC and it's operations, a brief explanation of why we need to be prepared for the foreign culture, and were looking forward to some language training, but our trainer was unavailable :( We were trying to catch up on our sleep, so we had leftover salad, frozen tacos and boxes scalloped potatos. Oh, well.

Postcard from East Kazakhstan The students' dining room at the summer camp of the East Kazakhstan Technical University architecture department. Photos by Alexander Sidorov. Photos by Alexander Sidorov. Dear ArchitectureWeek, Soon after East Kazakhstan Technical University was founded in the early 1960s, a pleasant retreat area was identified on a nearby riverside, on a picturesque bay called "Blue Gulf." The site is gently sloping, with open areas alternating with pine forest. My father, architect A. K. Sidorov, then rector of the university, designed a camp for rest and sports. The architecture department, of which my brother and I are members, has contributed a lot to its development. The camp now accommodates 150 people. Student housing consists of two lines of bungalows for six to eight people each, with a separate beach and sanitary facility. The bungalows are built of wood, concrete, and brick. The professors' wood bungalows, single-family or duplex, are sized for three to four family members and sited among the trees. The inside planning is simple but functional with zones for sleeping, cooking, and dining. Every bungalow is supported on stone pillars, which permits us to maintain the natural terrain and vegetation. Thrifty use of nature is a primary principle in planning and construction. Most of the bungalows were constructed by the professors themselves.

Working Papers on Central Asia and Iran Prepared by Professor Iraj Bashiri

web: bashiris.com Central Asia Iran Tajikistan Update ... Tajikistan in the 20th Century
Introductory Note:
  • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
  • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."
  • This web page covers a vast area from Africa to India and from Kazakhstan to the Persian Gulf. It also
