Modified: 2003-07-30 11:58 (Ottawa) Page 2 of 4 Project Traditional Dyes (Guinea) The craft industry occupies an important place in Guinea's economic life. It is estimated that over 10% of the population is involved in the industry, which provides about 40% of the country's manufactured goods. The textile sector is currently the country's largest craft activity with nearly 35% of the craftspeople involved in it. Dyeing is a craft practised by many associations, cooperatives, and villages that are traditionally famous for their products. The main colorant used is indigo. This project will improve traditional technologies of dyeing with indigo by focusing on the technique for producing the colorant; the method of preparing the fabric; and the dyeing process itself. It will also enable a Guinean engineer to take a 52-week intensive training course in colorant chemistry and textile technology in Canada. By developing the traditional technology, the project will increase the productivity of the craftsmen and the textile industry of the country. Mixed Fibre Processing and Spinning Equipment (India) Dryland Ecosystems Management (Kenya) In the arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya, natural vegetation is a crucial resource for the life support of human and livestock populations. Although government policy puts high priority on protecting and developing these resources, little has been done to develop sustainable management systems. There is a need to understand the dynamics of dryland ecosystems to avert further environmental degradation and consequent desertification with all the consequences they entail for local people and the nation itself. This project will address this need by carrying out research in the assessment and amelioration of natural vegetation in Baringo District. It will also provide university students with the opportunity to learn first-hand the challenges involved in the sustainable management of dryland environments as well as the chance to benefit from experience of local resource people and development agencies.

BURKINA, BAOBAB AND THE BOBO Burkina Faso, formerly known as Upper Volta, is an obscure, small landlocked nation in Africa.  It is located in a region away from my zone of familiarity  - previous work and travel has taken me to the southern and eastern portions of the continent but never West Africa.  Seeing a new place is always exciting, though, in this particular case, a source of minor trepidation.  Because Burkina is a Francophone country and my French is barely beyond non-existent, I anticipate some struggles.  Frantic hand and arm gestures can often compensate for language barriers (On a previous trip to Madagascar, another Francophone nation, I managed to get by). Two objectives have initiated this trip.  First to attend a medicinal plant forum and second to visit with communities undertaking projects involving the famous baobab tree, Adansonia digitata .  Twelve hours before leaving the United States, I learn the forum has been postponed because of concerns about a meningitis outbreak in the north of the country.  Late recognition of the postponement but still a strong desire to keep to the second half of my itinerary is taking me to Burkina Faso on the first day of spring.  The baobab and the country itself will receive unhurried attention.

Chief and People of Vea Call for an Access Bridge
The chief and people of Vea in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region on Thursday appealed to the government, the Bongo District Assembly, the Irrigation Company of Upper Region (ICOUR) and NGOs to consider constructing a bridge over the spillway of the Vea Irrigation Dam.
This would enable them to cart their farm produce to the nearby market centres and also link up with other neighbouring communities for interactions.

Page 2 That was the 9th Tuttlingen Honberg-Sommer www.tuttlingen.de 16th July 2003 He is without question one of the most interesting wanderers between the musical worlds. Hubert von Goisern proved that to the visitors in the completely sold-out Honberg-Sommer tent on Wednesday. The reminiscences took a broad area to the days of the Alpinkatzen , with whom the Styrian eared his reputation as the founder of alpine rock. Hubert von Goisern and his fantastic musicians easily managed the leap to world music, interweaving Caribbean, African and even folksy sounds, yodelling and singing and cast the astounded audience under their spell. The Austrian also showed himself to be a versatile instrumentalist, changing casually between electric guitar, diatonic, flute and trumpet. Goisern's honest "Thank you very much, Tuttlingen" came at the end of an almost three hour long concert evening which barely left any wish unanswered. Live in Tuttlingen 20th July 2003 Click photos to enlarge Hubert and the violinist 17th July 2003 Tuttlingen - Hubert von Goisern sings, coos and yodels about dangerous holy things and about headaches, about African post-harmonica times and about brown beer - and the Honberg audience goes wild. "Wer bin i und wer bist du, und ist es überhaupt so wichtig?" ("Who am I and who are you, and is it really so important?") Hubert von Goisern knows was his countless fans want. And so first of all he brings out the alpine rock with which he became well-known. When he yodels, the tent roof flutters, when he sings his frank love songs, it runs ice-cold down the women's backs, even in the sauna temperatures in the tent. "Wow, that's good!"
