Championships at the age of 8
By Rod Ohira
Star-Bulletin His emotions are masked by a stoic expression, the signature trait of a tough competitor. Jesse Placourakis is the real thing, a karate kid who at age 8 was the youngest American to win a title at last year's prestigious All-Japan Junior Championships. The Japan tournament, which is held every four years, is considered the Olympics of traditional full-contact sparring karate competition and the event attracted an international field of more than 600 competitors. "Karate teaches you many different things about courage and patience," Jesse said. "When I'm in a bad mood, I know how to make myself relax." Controlling anger is another factor, he says. "When we play touch football, it's hard to figure out first downs so sometimes arguments lead to fights," Jesse said. "Because I know karate, I have to remain calm and not fight."

By Tim Crouse Special to the Star-Bulletin Elisa Au's karate career has taken her to Venice, Italy, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Tokyo. But her trip to Richmond, Va., this week could be her most memorable. Au, a 19-year-old second-degree black belt, is already a world champion in two major karate organizations, but her goal is to win a World Karate Federation gold medal. The Hawaii athlete is in Richmond at the AAU/USA National Championships trying to earn her way onto the national team so she can compete for a WKF medal next spring. "The WKF is where I want to win," Au said. "It's a really big goal for me. It's the best competition in the world, the highest caliber." The national competition in Richmond begins tomorrow and runs through Friday. Au has participated in adult competitions since she was 14, but there are strict age requirements at the national level. This will be the first time Au will be in the women's division.

The team will participate in the Asian tournament for juniors held from August 21st to 25th. Yemen is in Al-Doha group which also includes Qatar, Bahrain, and Iran. The team started a local training camp on July 7th. However, the team is still not well prepared and has not participated in any preparatory matches. That is why, the coach, Mr. Ameen Al-Sonaini, decided his team should play with Qatari teams before the tournament starts. The Yemeni players seem to have a very high morale. Many of them are optimistic about achieving good results. Al-Sonaini says to Yemen Times: " The task is hard but when you see how optimistic our players are. The team is in very good spirits. I hope that we will overcome all the difficulties and do well"
Yemen Times wishes the best for our national team. They have good ambition, but is that enough?! Kung Fu Institute Opens The first specialized kung fu institute was opened in Sanaa last Wednesday. "
