DanceSport in the Olympics
The state of affairs before 2000
On Sept. 8, 1997 IOC granted the International DanceSport Federation (IDSF) status as a recognized federation and a member of the IOC. This does not mean that dancing has been recognzed as a medal sport. It simply means that the IOC has recognized an international body for governing dance-sport. This recognition is granted under Chapter 29 of the IOC Charter. Chapters 30 and 57 of the IOC Charter grant the international federation for a given sport the right to set the technical rules for competitions in that sport. So IDSF gets to set all the rules for DanceSport including styling and technique. The reasons for having an international federation recognized by IOC, even though the sport is not included in the Olympics, are 1) because it is a requirement for ultimately becoming a medal sport and 2) IOC believes strongly in furthering sports on the international level. DanceSport will NOT be a medal sport in Sydney in 2000 or in Athens in 2004. Under chapter 52 of the IOC Charter, sports must receive medal programme inclusion at least 7 years before the games begin, which means the deadline for the IOC Session (members) to vote on inclusion in the 2008 Olympics is September 2001. IDSF is planning on submitting an application for inclusion in 2008. It appears that the biggest hurdle that DanceSport faces is the sport versus art distinction. The IOC recently held a roundtable forum on Sports and Culture. One of the general themes was that art was used to celebrate the sports - and that both art and sport form part of the Olympic Culture. Also, the panel members seemed to say that sports are inherently artisitic, but that which is artistic is not necessarily sporting. A number of commentators tried to define art versus sport, but they seem to have generally failed, and resigned themselves to "I know sport (or art) when I see it."

Many Japanese go to the sea for surfing and scuba diving in the summer, while skiing and snowboarding are popular winter pursuits. MAJOR SPORTS
Baseball is one of the most popular spectator sports in Japan. There are 12 professional baseball teams, six in the Central League and six in the Pacific League. The teams in each league play about 140 games each during the season, at the end of which the two league winners meet in the Japan Series. In recent years, more and more Japanese players have been moving to the United States to play in Major League Baseball. Two of the most famous are Suzuki Ichiro and Matsui Hideki. Amateur baseball is also popular, and many schoolchildren play the game through local Little Leagues or school baseball clubs. The National High-School Baseball Championship, which is held twice a year, is fought out among schools that have survived tough qualifying rounds to represent their prefectures.

I used this book to help me learn the forms given, and found it very useful. I have since lent it to other students, who were similarly helped. The pictures demonstrate the techniques very clearly. The one lack is that the patterns are somewhat difficult to follow as far as direction - this requires careful reading of the text, but diagrams would have helped.

Delaware Sports presents SPECIAL PROFILES Noelle Kanaga Noelle Kanaga The 17-year old Noelle Kanaga is not a person to mess with. She walks with confidence and self-assuredness in her daily life as a benefit of her life-long devotion to karate. With one National Championship already under her third-degree black belt, Kanaga looks forward to either 2004 or 2008 when women will have a chance to compete for Olympic glory in Karate. "It is my dream to represent the United States at the Olympics," said the Greenville resident and senior at Tower Hill School in Wilmington. Noelle’s father took her to her first karate lessons when she was just four years old. As a former student of the Shotokan discipline, Mr. Kanaga knew that studying the martial arts would help his daughter obtain the skills necessary to defend her in life as well as develop the self-determination and self-awareness that she has indeed developed. Noelle began sparring against adult men at the age of ten with the blessings of her father. Those sparring sessions and the necessary extra training needed to become more competitive at that level helped lead her to achieve the rank of first-degree black belt at the tender age of eleven. Noelle’s progress was sure and steady from there. At 13 she received her second-degree black belt and at 16 her third degree in March of 2001.

http://www.allcombat.com/taekwondo1.html
Tae Kwon Do (tie-kwahn-doe)
"the way of the hands and feet"
Tae Kwon Do uses a large number of hand positions for its hand strikes, but is primarily known for its vast catalog of different kicks, many of them aimed at the head (such high kicks are not very common in other styles of martial art). Thus, flexibility, balance, and leg strength are important, especially for spinning, jumping, or flying kicks. However, the development of these traits is part of Tae Kwon Do training and the beginning student is started off with much simpler kicks. Though throwing and takedowns are taught in some schools, traditional Tae Kwon Do uses virtually no grappling techniques and as its name suggests is very much centered around superior punching and kicking ability. As is to be expected of a striking style, Tae Kwon Do uses blocks as its pimary defensive technique.
Some similar styles are:
Hwa Rang Do - Hwa Rang Do is the original Korean fighting art. It was eventually outlawed and driven underground and has only been available publicly since 1960. Includes a fair amount of grappling techniques.
Tang Soo Do - A style composed of approximately two-thirds Tae Kwon Do and one-third Kung-Fu, from which it derives its more circular movements.

(in Opinion) Titan Games Bring Olympic Fever to San Jose
Special to AsianWeek As reported in AsianWeek , the Titan Games were an opportunity to showcase some lesser-known Olympic sports, such as taekwondo. The martial art only became an official competition at the 2000 Sydney games. Korea won the overall competition by virtue of their complete domination of Japan, 7-1. Japan had in turn defeated the U.S. team. Although judo has its origins in Japan, it was China who defeated all comers in San Jose. Team U.S.A. was proud to draw with China, 4-4, in their head-to-head match-up, but China had so thoroughly thrashed Mexico, 8-0 (two of the matches lasted 29 and 32 seconds, respectively) that they took first place.
