December 11, 1995 - 'Project Alive': working together brings benefits for all It was her first 'paid' day on the job, and Mary Heuer was happy. After a nine-week training course at the Southeast Kansas Area Vocational-Technical School in Columbus followed by two weeks of unpaid work experience, Heuer, 33, now is employed full time operating a lathe at Williams Machine Tool, Galena. During a late November interview, she was using a lathe to bore identification numbers on a small piston part that eventually would go into a John Deere farm machine. Speaking during the 19-second intervals she had before exchanging parts in the lathe, Heuer said the hours she spends operating the machine do not seem grueling. She works from 6 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., earning $5.25 an hour with health insurance and profit sharing. I got used to it at Voc-Tech," she said of the work. I ran a lathe there, too. I made C-clamps and stuff like that. I also got my GED at Voc-Tech," she added. I found that harder, sitting in a classroom."
