By BEN FELLER
The Associated Press
Monday, May 17, 2004; 2:42 PM TOPEKA, Kan. - President Bush marked a half-century of school integration at the symbolic home of the movement Monday, saying "it changed America for the better, and forever." "Fifty years ago today, nine judges announced that they had looked at the Constitution and saw no justification for the segregation and humiliation of an entire race," Bush said at the opening of a national historic site at Monroe Elementary, a former all-black school in the heartland of the school desegregation effort. "Here on the corner of 15th and Monroe, and in schools like it across America, that was a day of justice, and it was a long time coming," the president said. But Bush said America still faces challenges. "The habits of racism in America have not all been broken," he said. "The habits of respect must be taught to every generation." He said laws against discrimination should be vigorously enforced.

    SISTER LIBRARIES:
A WHITE HOUSE MILLENNIUM COUNCIL PROJECT
The National Commission on Libraries and Information Science and Sister Cities International have embarked on a major initiative, Sister Libraries: A White House Millennium Council Project. The initial goal is for public and school libraries in the United States to pair with others worldwide, focusing on programs specifically planned for children and teenagers. Participating libraries, such as the ones listed here, receive recognition and designation as official White House Millennium Council Sister Libraries, but the project does not provide funds for staff, equipment or materials. Many Sister Libraries are in locations that are already affiliated through Sister Cities International, an organization for sister city, county and state programs in the United States. SCI is the official agency that links communities from the United States with communities worldwide. The Sister Library programs will do much to encourage multicultural exchange and broaden international understanding enabling young people to appreciate more fully their own place in, and impact on, the world of today and tomorrow! Photojournalist Jim Richardson delivered fourth Huck Boyd Lecture in Community Media
Photojournalist Jim Richardson discussed the importance of community media and showed slides of his travels at the fourth annual Huck Boyd Lecture on Community Media at Kansas State University on Sept. 18. Richardson, a Kansas native, displayed photos from Scotland, Kenya, China, Cuba, Kan. and many other places. In his photography, he tries to capture the beauty and importance of the commonplace that he first noticed as a youth. Since 1985, Richardson has worked primarily for the National Geographic Society. As a freelancer on contract, he has worked regularly for more than 20 years for the Society's National Geographic Magazine and is a contributing editor for the National Geographic Traveler Magazine. For both publications, he has researched and photographed stories that have taken him from the tops of active volcanoes to below the surface of boggy wetlands. The lecture was sponsored by the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media in the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Kansas State University.

The Community Newspaper Showcase of Excellence features some of the best community newspapers in the United States selected by judges for the National Newspaper Association's Better Newspaper Contest.
The goal of the project is to highlight excellence in community journalism, both for students and professionals.
The project is in its seventh year. The newspapers featured in this publication represent a cross-section of community journalism, from dailies in large towns to small weeklies in rural areas.
Students in Gloria Freeland's Newspaper Management class do the bulk of the writing. The NCCM then puts the publication together and an NNA-member newspaper prints it. The publication is a joint project of the NCCM and the National Newspaper Foundation.

Discover Kansas Trails is a cooperative effort between several northeast Kansas newspapers and the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media in Kansas State University's Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Now in its eighth year, the purpose of the tourism tabloid is to let visitors know about the interesting places to see and about the important history in this part of Kansas. Also, the tabloid is an excellent opportunity for a school of journalism and community newspapers to work together on a practical project.

May 1997 ATSDR AND EPA Warn the Public About Continuing Patterns of Metallic Mercury Esposure Metallic mercury is a hazardous chemical that can cause serious health problems. Children (especially very young children) and fetuses are most vulnerable. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), part of the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are jointly issuing an alert to the general public. There is a continuing pattern of metallic mercury exposure in children and teenagers and in persons using certain folk medicines or participating in certain ethnic or religious practices.
It is important for the general public to understand that either short-term or long-term exposures to metallic mercury can lead to serious health problems. Human exposure to metallic mercury occurs primarily from breathing contaminated air. Other forms of mercury can be absorbed by drinking contaminated water, eating food (usually fish containing mercury), and from skin contact. At high levels, metallic mercury can cause effects on the nervous system and the developing fetus. Other forms of mercury can damage other organs. Even at low levels, metallic mercury can cause health problems.
