Soldiers Magazine
Nov, 2003 by Bill McKale
ONE hundred fifty years ago Fort Riley, Kan., was established as a post from which soldiers of the 7th Cavalry could protect people and goods moving over the Oregon and Santa Fe tails from Indian attacks. Today the post is known as "America's Warfighting Center" and is home to elements of the 1st Armored and 1st Infantry divisions. During the 1850s and into the Civil War period the fort was a staging area for soldiers dispersed along overland trails and near settlements. In 1892 the Cavalry and Light Artillery School was built at Fort Riley and, later, the Mounted Service School focused on training individual soldiers and officers rather than regiments. During that same time period, the fort was selected as one of the installations to host the first large-scale combined maneuvers between regular and National Guard units.

Member posted 05-08-2004 09:26 PM I've been interested in Martial Arts. Sometimes my friends and I will teach each other moves. I've also been real interested in the Samurai to. Any way I knew that the Samurai invented Koryu Jujutsu so I was wondering if there are any Koryu Jujutsu schools.

my father is six months old
december 9, 2003, my father went in to remove the cancer the doctors had just discovered in his colon. he came out of surgery with a set term on his life of four to six months: liver cancer
he is alive, healing from the surgery, and has not exhibited any obvious symptoms of the disease.
therefore, as far as i am concerned, he is six months old. every day he lives now is a day the doctors swore he would not have.
as you may imagine, i have very little use for doctors.

rain in kansas city While I admit I love Kansas City at all times, in all weather–after snow, rain is my favorite ‘weather-event’, as they call it on the news.
It may be because we don’t get enough of it for my taste, but when it rains, I have to grin. There’s the way the cloud-tops roll in, clipping the top of the downtown buildings (I’ve never been on the top floors then–is it like fog? or is it just a little misty?) and practically bisecting the KCPT tower. There’s the rattle of the rain drops on the windows, and the way the cats start running back and forth excitedly at the noise and the smell. There’s the liquid pewter run of water down the hill, and the silver flick of the drops flying by. The trees in Mill Creek Park never seem as green as they do against an electric-blue thunderstorm sky in August, and the Plaza on a dark, thunderstormy night, when everyone has fled for home, is pure black magic.

American Overseas Schools Historical Society
by Marc Curtis It happens often. I'll be at a dinner party with some clients, or on an airplane sitting next to strangers. The conversation eventually comes around to the question of, "Where are you from?" If you¹re like me (and you probably are if you're reading this!) you stumble for a second then say something like "well, I was born in San Francisco, but I never lived there." Then I mention that I am a Military Brat and one of two things happensthey either laugh and ask what you mean, or they say "Me too!" Often that leads to a mention of the fact that I have no "home town" to call my own. In December of 2000, I was among a small group who were invited to a meeting in Wichita, Kansas to see what the American Overseas Schools Historical Society is creating. Being one who never attended a school overseas I had somewhat of an attitude in the past of "gee, that's nicefor them!" But my perspective changed after meeting with Dr. Drysdale and the othersand particularly after a visit to the archives. The group had the opportunity to go to the archive building and look through some of the boxes of photos, yearbooks, documents and other items. It was almost like going through my mom's cedar chest and discovering tidbits of my life that bring back such great memories of childhood!
